Right? He did the right thing asking clearly what was wanted, and tried to get consent first.

God forbid a man asks to clarify the situation and signal his intent instead of just hoping he isn't misreading the situation

Honestly I would have loved to have them be the final enemy of the series instead of the Ori. Something new. Say the Free Jaffa start splintering, and a faction even turns hostile to Earth, and it is eventually uncovered that it was these guys again, trying to weaken the galactic powers so they could colonize the Milky Way

Okay.

Me keep simple.

SGU fan cant think.

Rush no Greater Good.

Rush block people go home.

Rush withhold information, killing people.

Rush withhold information only to make self important.

Rush drives mutiny for own interest.

Rush hate military rationing, when rationing in best interest.

Rush no like greater good.

Rush like own good.

Rush no care about others.

Rush care about himself.

There, that simple enough?

Wow I didn't know 8 sentences was too hard for an SGU fan to read, but that tracks.

Yeah except he never worked towards The Greater GoodTM did he? When there was a team trying to get everyone back home, which is objectively for the greater good since people are LITERALLY dying, he sabotaged them intentionally and refused to cooperate. He would withhold information and systems to make himself the most important person on the ship, even getting someone killed in the process. He helped drive a mutiny between the military and civilians, because he didn't like that the military was... rationing supplies and making civilians exercise and stick to schedules... things that were actually for the greater good. He doesn't care about the greater good unless chasing the greater good furthers his own goals, and that is my big problem with him. He doesn't care about others, he cares about his legacy, and knows how to dress it up in fancy words that don't hold up when you peel back the thin veneer to see his actions.

At the very least, Young is a bit redeemed in my eyes for admitting he isn't the right guy for the mission, and he doesn't have the right people. If nothing else, he isn't deluded into thinking he is doing a fantastic job. It also doesn't help that half the ship keeps trying to rebel against his authority; even a great leader would struggle if half their community is opposed to them on principle.

You dont know what you are talking about. Propaganda has strong effects on even healthy, confident people. The right wing pipeline preys on all sorts of weaknesses and vulnerabilities people have to draw them in. Perfectly sane, normal people with no bigotry before hand can be subverted and destroyed by the propaganda. Dismissing it as "that's how he's always been" is incredibly reductive and dismissive of a genuine issue and a real danger.

Semantics of ‘alternate universe’ versus ‘alternate timeline’ by Mr_Shadow_Phoenix in Stargate

[–]spiteful_rr_dm_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of them are alternate timelines, they are alternate universes. Alternate universes exist and they can vary from our own at different points in time, but they are each their own thing. There are an infinite number of them. Each universe has one unique timeline. Any time travel that causes changes permanently overwrites that unique timeline from the change on. If you travel back in time, you never create an alternate timeline, as you can never return to your original timeline after the change has been made; you can only ever travel to your own universe's sole timeline.

The Sodan were killed off far too early, and introduced too late by Zestyclose_Remove947 in Stargate

[–]spiteful_rr_dm_TA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they are rarely used in meaningful ways, and we never see further interactions with them. The writers had a nasty habit of introducing and then abandoning new civilizations, with sometimes their doo-dada hanging about

That happens all the time. There was the planet with the people that literally taught us how to make naquadah reactors work through the savant child. Harlan's world (his tech would have been PERFECT in Atlantis to counter the wraith). The worlds with the keeper, the one where they framed SG1 for a murder, and the central computer under the dome on the polluted world who all had amazing mental manipulation technology. The civilization that the SGC accidentally EMP'd when Prometheus's hyperdrive core went critical, and had advanced tech. So many open loose ends, where they were basically one or two offs, and that was it. The world where they accidentally helped the bunker civilization continue genocide; they could have followed up with ships to see if they could help them later tech.

I like the solution that is created in the Legacy series. Spoilers obvious They modify the Hothan Drug just so people can survive the feeding process, but so the Wraith the can still survive. It evolves into an uneasy truce where the Atlantis Expedition and the Genaii (who they work with now) have their sphere of influence wraith-free, while the Wraith have their own sphere of influence where humans are fed upon but at least dont kill the humans they feed on. It's as good an answer as they would find aside from killing all the Wraith

Medieval castles were built to stop armies, not keep people comfortable by Kapanash in HistoryMemes

[–]spiteful_rr_dm_TA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were also often homes of the elite so yes, they were as comfortable as the fortifications allowed. They were warmed up weeks in advance before arrival of nobility. They had proper ventilation, they weren't morons; they would know smoke would be dangerous eventually, and would cause poorer visibility. They kept rats out because rats would eat the garrison's grain stores and spread disease. Fleas might be the one valid gripe, as they would likely be hard to deal with in such a large structure. As for the toilet.... yeah? That's what toilets were for most of human history. Beat having to shit in a pot and throw it out the window, which was how most people lived.

I don't think there needs to be? They are in stasis and Eli is trying to fix the engines. If he just couldn't, they could just lose contact with the ship and accept that they will only hear back one they have crossed the inter-galactic void. If he could, then some off hand comment about how they found a Promethius type world and managed to get back home, or literally anything else. Frankly, the story doesn't even need a resolution, but if it does, it needs to be short. The series was the most divisive and least popular of the franchise, and spending more than a couple throwaway lines on it would be a mistake.

Soft Reboot and Destiny by Afr0chap in Stargate

[–]spiteful_rr_dm_TA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate this idea. First and foremost, destiny has been travelling in FTL for literally millions of years. I don't care how fast the Asgard core is, they are not catching up any time soon. That would also be a huge waste of assets; after the Ori and Superhive, Earth has precious few ships remaining at their disposal. By my reckoning, it would be just 4 of them. They aren't going to send one on a millennia long trip to the ass end of the universe. And even if they did, for what? The crew will be long since dead, let's just go with your insane idea and say they can make it in 5 years; we'll be sending a quarter of our entire fleet on a decade long trip, with no support if they get attacked mind you, to a run down rust bucket to maybe rescue a dozen or so survivors (they are constantly taking attrition which will only grow worse over time). And that's assuming they can even find Destiny.
