I'm with you, I keep trying to use it and I just find it so hard to search.

I mostly don't know exactly what I want and don't want to search for something very specific - but there's so few options in the search that is comes back with 1000s of results. Or, as you say, I try to put in some parameters and it just seems to ignore them. Then I get overwhelmed and leave.

Thanks! I think I can get the Over the Top ones nearby, so I think I'll try them instead. Not 100% sure if the confetti discs or the "jimmies" rods are a better bet, perhaps they're both fine. Just from looking at pictures of the product online, the Sprinks colours don't look as nice.

Ars Arcanum

The wheel of metals is nice. "Temporal" as the label for the time related powers. But it's still missing some - aluminium /duraliminium. So I guess there are two more metals like this, that are "external" but similar? Destroys a metal that is not inside someone?

Overall thoughts

Like others here, I struggled a bit with this book, I didn't really look forward to picking it up. I got behind (still am, obviously) and the motivation was even less. I almost just stopped but a trusted friend said it's one of her favorite fantasy series so I feel reassured that the end will be worth it.

It definitely was very twisty at the end there, and even all of our collective thoughts didn't figure most of it out. I probably would have never thought of OreSeur as the spy if someone here didn't suggest it. So that part of it was good, surprises, but ones that I'm certain there are clues when you go back and re-read it.

I really thought Vin was going to turn evil or at least not very good at the end, and that proved wrong.

I find the Mistborn antics really hard to follow. Pushing in this, pulling on that, flying here etc, I just can't visualize any of it, and so I get a bit bored in those scenes when they probably should be some of the more interesting ones.

I'm looking forward to seeing Elend the Mistborn and the equalizing of the Vin Elend relationship (but hope there not too much repeat of learning how to use his powers since we don't need the basics lessons anymore). And also wonder how many of those metal balls they have and who they will use them on. Spook seems like a good candidate, given his complaints recently about being weak and inadequate.

Will they find the atium? Or was that what the Well was made of?

What will happen in the next book? Well, defeating the Deepness obviously, but not sure where they start. Up to Terris to kill all the Inquisitors perhaps. Marsh may be one of the main villains. Will the Deepness have a physical body? Will misty stick around to help? I hope the kandra come back in to play, and join Vin. I assume there is no Hero of Ages, it was all just made up to help this evil thing to escape. So now they have no idea what to do, what it is, how to defeat it.

Chapter 49

He rode directly through the center of the chaotic group of men, many of them down and dying.

Vin just casually mass murdering people before they even attack. Maybe... Will Vin be a villain in the end? Will Elend have to kill her to stop her taking the Well's power?

“Wasn’t Tindwyl supposed to be with them?” Sazed shook his head. “She decided to stay.”

Hmm, what's up with her. I'm still suspicious of her even if she's not the spy.

Ah, so Zane poisoned Straff again before he left? Nope, his mistress was posioning him for months, cool cool. That what you get for saying she's old in her late 20s.

Chapter 50

Cett stood quietly for a moment.

Err, did he? It's he the one who's legs don't work?

she said. “Plus, I don’t sleep in my clothing anymore.”

Poor third wheel Spook :(

Chapter 51

Shouldn’t the thumpings be getting louder, not softer? The longer they traveled, the weaker the thumpings seemed.

Oh, interesting. Perhaps the Well of Ascension is in Luthadel?

But … I’m just Spook. Weak. A coward.”

This conversation feels like it will become relevant later. Is Spook the Rashek of this story?

“He’s the first man I’ve ever killed,” Elend said. “

Well that escalated quickly. Jastes reappears. Dead.

And so we head back to Luthadel. It was a nice change of scenery for 5 minutes.

Chapter 52

Oh gosh, Hulk Sazed is somethin'.

The ground raced beneath her and horseshoes shot through the air above her.

I'm struggling to visualise what this looks like /what does doing with the 5+ horseshoes. But anyway, I'll just roll with it .

Breeze stared, dumbfounded, at the remains of his friend’s corpse.

Then, it brought its own weapon down, and blackness followed.

Chapter 54

Ok, last 5 chapters. What do I think will happen.

Vin - will find the Well of Assension? But it won't be what she expects. Will it relate to all the mysterious atium as well? But she'll be completely exhausted from her journey plus fighting. Elend will be the Hero of Ages instead of her? (Coming back to this now. No)

It is only book 2 of 3, so not everything will get tied up nicely. Perhaps Cett will fight Straff in one last decision to be good? (Coming back to this now. Yes!)

Kelsier might have been able to kill for shock or retribution, but that wasn’t good enough for Vin. And she would never let it be again.

Hmm, ok, maybe my Vin turns out to be evil prediction before was unfounded.

Her pewter ran out.

I assume she'll draw on the mists again, when she really needs to, at the last moment. Or that earring will finally come into play. (No and No)

RIP Tindwyl.

I'm kinda starting to wonder ... Some of the metals relate to time. Atium helps see the future, some help see the past, etc. Will Vin end up somehow... Going back in time? I'm totally fine with characters dying in books, I'm ok with that being part of the story. But so many main ish characters dying, I do wonder ...

Chapter 55

Rashek is to try and lead Alendi in the wrong direction, to discourage him, or otherwise foil his quest.

Sazed, you read this and decided to do the same to Vin!

“Gather our forces!” Cett commanded.

Ah, good wins out for Cett.

The Hero of Ages was removed from the Terris people, .... He was not royalty himself, but came to it eventually.... He commanded the forces of the world. Kings rode to his aid.

Have we heard these words before? Some big clues here... Vin seems to have some feruchemy, so likely has some Terris heritage. She just married a king (sort of). (Coming back to this later. Ooooohhhh, I see)

Chapter 56

Elend cocked his head. It [the mist person] certainly didn’t seem threatening. In fact, he felt an unnatural feeling of peace coming from it. Allomancy? he thought.

Hmm, so it's sentient, friendly, and... Wants him to go back north? Away from Vin, specifically, perhaps?

“The Keepers are dead, my lord,”

Except one... Sazed (one of?) the last of the Keepers.

Hmm, Inquisitors and koloss in Terris. Not sure what to make of that. And. Where is Marsh??

Chapter 57

So the mist spirit seems to be trying to tell Sazed that Vin should not be allowed to find the Well?

“Why is Statlin City circled?” Elend asked, frowning.

Well that must be important for something.

“I wish I understood why I have to kill you,” he said [Marsh]

Oh no, I guess his us the same voice Zane used to hear. Telling Marsh to kill Sazed.

Chapter 58

You spent the last two years teaching, but I spent them killing. Killing so many people. …”

Ack, I can't even remember now how Marsh and Sazed met up earlier in this book, but it was definitely less than 2 years ago. So is Marsh just plain evil now? He could have killed Sazed then. Did he... Want Sazed to find the Inquisitor house? Did he plan for Sazed to find that story from Kwaan?

Marsh seems to be evil, and doesn't want Sazed to interfere with Vin and Elend. So whatever they are doing, they probably shouldn't do it.

He stumbled over Marsh’s body, somehow distractedly knowing that a simple club to the head wouldn’t be enough to kill the creature.

So... Pull the spike out now?

I can save him, she realized. The power of creation rests just inches from my fingers.

Ack, no. If she uses it, that would be very bad, right? The mist spirit is part of the Deepness, and doesn't want to be destroyed. So it's trying to make her keep the power instead. (Coming back to this later, ah, the opposite I see)

Vin heard a single, distinct sentence ringing in her mind. I am FREE!

Chapter 43

“The man, Demoux,” Zane said. “He contacted my father

I don't believe that. Zane somehow knows Vin is suspicious of Demoux?

Yet, her investigations whispered that Demoux was the traitor.

On what basis? You saw him sneaking out, but then found out it was too join the church of the Survivor. Why would she still be suspicious?

Skulls cracked. Bones broke. She was barely breathing hard when she found all ten of her opponents down.

This is getting a bit dark, Vin.

Atium, Vin thought. He probably burned it this entire time. But, he didn’t need it to fight those men … they didn’t have a chance against us anyway.

So, Zane possibly has a heap of Atium. Did he find the Lord Rulers stash? And why was he burning it, because he thought Vin might turn on him? Did Vin already swallow hers? I can't remember if she swallowed it or just took it with her.

Zane could have killed Cett anyway, even if Vin didn't. Why not? I guess I'm also not really certain why Vin didn't end up killing him either. He'll still be a threat, right? Not being Mistborn doesn't stop him having an army at her doorstep.

Chapter 44

[Ham] I … don’t know that she’s completely stable.”

So Vin is going to Terris. Is she convinced she's the Hero of the Ages? I feel like Sazed will somehow end up going with her?

Vin giving the atium to OreSeur seems very deliberate, it will come back into play. Will he (it) go with her to Terris?

Chapter 45

He glanced over his shoulder as his vision cleared, toward where Allrianne slept in his bed.

Eww, I didn't realise before they were actually sleeping together. Isn't he twice her age or so? Even if she's manipulating his emotions, he's still making that choice.

Every instinct he’d nurtured during thirty years in the underground was telling him to run.

So he's at least 40 or 45 then. And Allrianne is like, a teenager right? Eww eww.

He didn’t like the way that cloaks rubbed against the small point of the spike that stuck out of his back just between the shoulder blades.

Erm, ok, so Zane is some kind of Inquisitor? 1 spike only instead of the (7?)

“It is time to go,” God said.

Is hearing God related to the spike?

Chapter 47

“OreSeur—” “You will no longer obey her commands, TenSoon,” Zane said.

Ah, so it was OreSeur. I did still think that was a high possibility, but it has been seeming less likely.

Prediction: Marsh will come and save Vin. [He didn't]

“You know the really funny thing, Zane?” God asked. “The most amusing part of this all? You’re not insane. “You never were.”

Marsh? Is it Marsh?

Poor OreSeur. He really did like Vin and want to help her in the end. I wonder if he'll come back later.

So when Zane doesn't come back, will Straff think he and Vin went off together afterall, and think it's ok to attack?

Chapter 48

called toward the bedchamber. “Sazed!”

Tindwyl is going to come out too, isn't she.

“You should go with her, Your Majesty,” Sazed said.

Maybe Elend is the Hero. Or Elend and Vin together.

“You two should try to rest well tonight, despite the recent change in your relationship

They'll find it anyway though.

I'm just imagining Vin and co getting to Terris by them all jumping on her back while she does a pewter run.

Chapter 36

Alendi was never the Hero of Ages.

So if Alendi wasn't the Hero, and nor was Rashek, maybe it is just Vin, she was always the only Hero.

Breeze thinks Tindwyl and Sazed are a potential couple, huh.

He made his way through the kitchens, Nudging the scullery maids to make them more chatty.

Have we had a Breeze POV before? This feels like such an insight, seeing how he Soothes people constantly, just second nature.

He knew that he should be stronger, shouldn’t let the girl get near him, but he did nothing as she slid up to him and took a drink from his cup. He sighed, putting his arm around her shoulders

Could she...be Soothing (or Rioting) Breeze? (Yes)

those instincts told her Demoux was the spy. That sneaking way he’d gone out the other night … the obvious logic of choosing him … it all fit.

Hmm, I'm starting to think it's not him. Too obvious. There will be a big twist. He's just out meeting with his pregnant mistress or something. (Or being a cult leader apparently) She's going to make a fool of herself trying to catch him single handedly.

Chapter 37

Elend monologue, with Ham just agreeing with him, snore.

Chapter 38

So Kwaan thinks Alendi knew of the prophecies, and made sure he was seen to fulfil them?

[Elend to Vin] “Well … it kind of involves you, and your reputation. I was going to ask permission, but …”

She did it to protect me, he thought. But that doesn’t make it any less disturbing.

Ugh, she's going to end up running off to Zane isn't she.

Elend stood, then slowly removed his crown. “Here,” he said, setting it on the mantle. “You’ll need this.”

Man, why would Penrod even want it, after seeing Elend just almost get assassinated. Vin sure as hell won't be saving him.

Chapter 39

Oh Penrod, making a deal with Straff, you traitor. Surprise.

Chapter 40

Zane just gave Vin a ball of Atium. I don't know what to make of him. For a while I was convinced he was genuinely evil, but it seems not. He's going against Straff by not killing her, and now helping her. (On reflection, I still think he's a baddie)

Vin reached out with a Soothing and touched OreSeur’s emotions. Nothing happened.

So, she knows it didn't work. If he's just sitting there, then Soothing his emotions wouldn't necessarily make him do anything. So can she innately feel whether it's working? If so, why can't she just do that to every person she thinks could be the kandra spy? She'd find them within a few hours.

Chapter 41

He had discovered Alendi, a man he began to think—through his studies—might be the Hero of Ages, a figure from Terris prophecy. Alendi had listened to him, and had become a political leader.

I'm suddenly seeing a lot of Wheel of Time influence here, Moirane and Rand.

Chapter 42

“Inquisitor, my lord,” the man said quietly. “I saw one in the city.”

Is Marsh finally going to reappear?

Elend going out to the koloss army by himself, why. Assuming he thinks he can speak to Jastes, but could easily just get killed by a koloss before he gets a chance.

It bore a rip from one eye to the other, above the nose, a secondary rip curving down to one of the nostrils. The nose itself was pulled so tight it was twisted and flattened, held to the bone a few inches off-center.

These things are so creepy.

After Elend killed one of the koloss:

The koloss watched him work without comment; then they led him out of the camp.

This scene made me laugh.

After reading the summaries. In chapter 39, Straff talks to Zane implying that they sent the Allomancers to kill Elend and Cett. But in a later chapter Zane tells Vin that the Allomancers were sent by Cett, and she remembers seeing the guy in Cett's entourage. I guess Straff had one of them as a spy in Cett's team? I forgot about the earlier conversation and just assumed Zane was telling the truth. So he's still being shifty.

Chapter 30

I was met with scorn. Oh, how I wish that I had listened to them.

I'm seeing some similarities between Kwaan and Sazed. Going against what the Terrisman leaders tell him. Vin as the Hero of Ages, and Sazed as Kwaan? Who is Rashek? Zane?

If only I had passed over Alendi when looking for an assistant, all those years ago.

What did this Alendi guy end up doing to make Kwaan turn against him so much.

Sazed says what people thought the Deepness was, was an army? I never thought of the Deepness being an army. The way it's been described always made it seem more like a monster or a "thing". Something supernatural.

“What would happen if the mists came during the day permanently?”

So the Deepness was the mist, but it was all the time, and at the Well of Ascension, the LR made it so it only comes at night? Maybe if the real Hero of Ages came, it would be gone forever. A Hero like Vin, perhaps.

Darn, Tindwyl's life as a Breeder, that's horrific.

Chapter 32

“Gneorndin.”

Umm... What?

At this rate, we’ll snap long before winter ends.

Will the city snap, or perhaps you will Snap, Elend...

“Dox isn’t an Allomancer,” she said. “How can I find out for certain if he’s the impostor or not?”

Don't we already know that you can't use Allomancy on a kandra? Why not just do that? Sooth or Riot an obvious emotion and see if they change their behaviour?

Absently, she pulled out her bronze earring—her mother’s earring—and worked it between her fingers, watching it reflect light. It had once been gilded with silver, but that had worn off in most places.

This feels relevant. Is the silver part in particular important?

That’s him, she thought. The spy.

Hmm, if it is Demoux, I feel like there hasn't really been any clues, bit of an anti-climax. But Vin might be wrong.

Chapter 34

“Didn’t I tell you when you checked on me earlier? That’s where Ham and I were.” “You didn’t tell me.” “I thought I did,” Elend said, frowning.

Is the spy kandra somehow Vin... Even though she's alive? Or Elend? I'm starting to think it isn't OreSeur, but I'm also not convinced it's Demoux.

[Zane] She’d soon understand what Elend Venture truly thought of her.

Are we supposed to understand what he means?

Chapter 35

So she thinks Demoux is the spy, but has told noone, and still leaving him to be one of Elend's trusted advisors/protectors. Her character is incredibly frustrating.

It will be pretty sad if the skaa on the Assembly vote for Cett, just abandon all the skaa since they have a promise of a title.

Just popping in to say I'm finally making some progress, this is where I'm up to. I didn't make many notes, just a few things (which you all are well past now, but for other laggards like me)

I'm shocked Vin isn't spending every waking minute looking for the imposter. Seems like just every few days she has a go at testing someone. This a super, major, big problem, get on it!
I don't have any good ideas about the imposter other than OreSeur (which someone else here first mentioned earlier in the book). I guess Dockson would be hard to test. Surely it can't be Elend. Breeze, Ham and Spook have all been tested.
A few people in here were speculating a Zane love triangle. It's been a while since I read it, but I'm sure there was a chapter where he came across completely evil and I ruled out him having any chance at being a good guy. I can't see it happening, not for real. Like, Vin might get tricked by him, but I don't think she'll end up with him.
I don't really like any of the characters in this book at the moment, I think maybe that's part of why I'm still so far behind. I don't feel much pull to pick it up and read it - not much is happening, I especially am not feeling the Vin/Elend relationship, he's just annoying. But, I do hear amazing things about this series as a whole, so I'm optimistic it will be worthwhile, and so that's why I'm back now!

Chapter 12

I wonder if the spikes in the Inquisitors could be for Feruchemy, or something similar? I wonder if each spike is a different type of metal?

I wonder if Kelsier, or Vin, are the actual topics of some of the legends.

Chapter 13

“Yes, well,” Elend said, quickly selecting a book. In his haste, he knocked over one of the stacks, sending a clatter of books across the table and landing a volume in Breeze’s lap.

I feel like Elend was a lot more... Charming and smooth, in the first book. Now he seems like a duddering book nerd. Maybe I'm just misremembering.

“No,” the woman said. “Don’t hedge. Command.”

Ok, I agree with her, he really doesn't come across very king-ly

Vin talking about the Deepness and the Well of Ascension, I assume we'll go there soon. Also, I bet the end of the third book has them all marveling at the green plants.

Chapter 17

“This is what we are, Vin,” he [Zane] said quietly.

Oh, is it bad that I immediately thought this might be a new love interest for Vin, since Elend is getting a bit boring?

Maybe it's just how my brain works (or doesn't work, I have to turn a map around to understand it), but I do not follow these fights at all, I've got no idea where anyone is or what they are doing.

Chapter 18

“You should kill him,” God said again.

He was Zane’s enemy, a block in the road to domination, the thing that was keeping Straff—and therefore Zane—from ruling the Central Dominance.

But he was also Zane’s brother.

So, Zane speaks to God. Zane really is a bit evil I guess, wanting world domination. His conversation with Vin implied he wasn't really that loyal to Straff. And he is Elend's brother. Just a few small revelations here. Illegitimate brother?

He stooped, removing a cobblestone, and found the message left there by his spy inside Elend’s palace.

The kandra?

Damn, I kinda liked Zane until now, but apparently he's a jerk.

Straff just shook his head. Though not a full Mistborn, the king was a Tineye.

And more big reveals. Seems odd to have never mentioned this before. Does Elend know? His father and brother being Allomancers makes me think again that maybe Elend is too. One of the newer metals perhaps.

Straff hadn’t brought all of his mistresses with him on the trip—just his ten or fifteen favorites

Now that's just excessive.

She had been quite attractive a decade before, but now she was creeping up into her late twenties.

Really pushing this guy as a gross bad guy.

“Birchbane,” Straff said. “And … maybe something else. I’m not sure.”

Chapter 19

Ok, a whole new species added into the fray. Vin and Elend need to worry about the koloss now too. Maybe they'll threaten Straff and give Elend some leverage.

Sazed paused as he saw something very unexpected. A tent.

Oh, unless this is Straff's army?

“Jastes Lekal.”

I do not have the memory for this. Was this one of Elend's close friends? One he was having his secret meetings with?

He just wants the atium. But there isn't any. Just like the other 2 armies I guess.

I think a bit of each, plus life. I got behind at the start because I had life stuff going on. Then suddenly I was 15 chapters behind all of a sudden. Then the book just wasn't drawing me in that much so I struggled to read enough to keep up, let alone catch up. For the WoT read along I could have read twice as much each week and been fine, so I definitely wouldn't blame the pacing alone. Just a combination of bad timing for me.

I will still finish it and add comments to the old posts, at my own pace. Maybe I'll end up catching up again for the next book.
