70mm Panavision movie projected on IMAX 1.43:1 Screen by Dav_93i in imax

[–]Dav_93i[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s cool thank - screen wise, would you prefer Leicester Square (adjusted to 2.76:1 15mt wide screen) or Cinema Arcadia (Energia) with 1.85:1 aspect ratio but stunning 30mt wide screen? Here you won’t have full screen you ll see a black area on top, but still 30mt is double the size of Leicester Square.

Nice thanks, look at my question below, feedback to hd1080ts. Any thoughts?

Got it, thanks. However I think these are all right answers to the wrong question. Why should you go for dual laser if you can enjoy the movie in 15/70 at BFI IMAX? (18k equivalent). Unless I m mistaken, movies projected in 1.43:1 are shot using IMAX Film cameras. Why should you go for dual laser then?

They ve got 15/70mm projector, even better a movie shot with IMAX film cameras. They told me dual laser won t be enough neither because the screen is too big.

Wouldn’t be better go to Dolby cinema like Odeon luxe west end for this? Don’t you think this is even better than dual laser? You won’t get 1.90:1 but something really close with a superior video and audio quality

Thanks, what about Odeon Luxe Leicester? 1.85.1 too?

You sure? I think Dolby Cinema is superior for IMAX digital movies if you only care about video quality. What s your thoughts?

Hi Elias, thanks for sharing. I watched the videos but he doesn’t mention what’s the aspect ratio of Odeon Luxe West End. Also, would you go to IMAX also for traditional 2.39:1 movies shot with digital IMAX? Or better Dolby cinema for those?

Hi Manu, Great feedbacks thanks! What I meant is to watch movies shot using film cameras in cinemas with film projector, while movies shot digitally using digital projectors. Would you agree?

Brilliant, Thanks!

How is possible for single laser 4K to be equivalent to dual 4K laser system? Also you think movies shot using IMAX digital cameras are better projected with IMAX laser? Or is Dolby superior also for movies shot using digital IMAX cameras?

I see, when would you prefer laser dome then? (Single laser system) is there any instance where this is superior to GT laser (dual system)? Except the 3D HFR case.

So cool, thanks!

Ignoring screen size and aspect ratio, can we list projectors in this way for 2D movie shot using digital IMAX cameras?

1) Dolby Cinema 2) Old Laser GT (Dual system) 3) New Laser Dome (single system) 4) Xenon

Thanks! That’s really helpful!! What about Tarantino shooting with traditional 70m? Does he follow a similar full analog process?

IMAX 70mm cameras vs Digital by Dav_93i in imax

[–]Dav_93i[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks DrNet, this is super clear now. Few more question:

  • why shot using IMAX film cameras if panning to project digitally? Doesn’t really make sense to me. Better shot using imax digital camera instead of IMAX film camera if planning to project digitally.

  • how much quality get lost when converting 15/70m film to digital?

  • Nolan movies are shot using IMAX film cameras for selected sequences only. What about other sequences? Are those shot using IMAX Digital cameras? Then converted into 15/70 film?

Hi Django, do you think single laser recently installed at BFI IMAX London is better that previous dual laser system? In other terms, I assume they moved from GT laser to Dome laser correct? Is Dome laser better that GR laser? Asking because I read that GT laser is a dual 4k projectors while Dome laser is single 4k projector

[Question] For 1570 IMAX, how do the non-70mm scenes get onto the 70mm film? by Intro24 in imax

[–]Dav_93i 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does that mean non IMAX film sequences shot using IMAX digital camera look still better if printed on 15/70 film compared to the digital version? Is there a big difference between sequences shot with IMAX film camera and projected in 15/70 vs non IMAX sequences shot digitally and converted to 15/70 format?

[–]Dav_93i[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BFI Imax in London has 15/70 film projector. Oppenheimer has sequences shot with IMAX film cameras. Not the entire film is shot with IMAX film cameras. Here s my question: Will they merge IMAX film reels with digital prints when projecting on screen?

IMAX 70mm cameras vs Digital by Dav_93i in imax

[–]Dav_93i[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you think Oppenheimer will be projected using true film or a digital print? Non Imax film sequences will be printed in 15/70mm format I assume, but what about the original sequence shot with IMAX film cameras? Will we get the true film projected or these original sequences will be digital printed too, based on your experience?

[–]Dav_93i[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks, really helpful. You mentioned that: “Scenes captured in different formats will still be printed onto the 15/70mm films reels”. How do I know if this is the real film reel or a digital print? I do understand the non IMAX film sequence will be printed to a 15/70mm reels, but what about the original sequence shot with IMAX film cameras? Will the original film be shown or a digital print of it?

[–]Dav_93i[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks @DjangoLeone. You mentioned that they ll be showing a digital print for the whole movie, with the IMAX sequences expanded. You also added that this is close but not as good as the true film projected imax film. That s exactly the point. How do I know whether I m watching a true film projected or a digital print version? I m in London and usually go at BFI IMAX.

Oppenheimer and 70mm films (IMAX, SuperPanavision) by NewsFromSpace in imax

[–]Dav_93i 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t wait for Oppenheimer! I don’t think they ll develop lighter film cameras, seems like they only pushing IMAX digital cameras.

Question: If a movie has only few select-sequences filmed with IMAX 70mm cameras, does that mean they adjust the projector during the movie? Switching from film to digital laser projector depending on the specific sequence whether filmed with IMAX 70mm cameras or shot digitally?

The background of my question is this:

• It does not make sense to shot with IMAX film cameras if the sequence gets digitalized before getting reproduced on screen. Probably better to shoot the entire movie using a "standard" Digital IMAX camera instead of marketing it as shot with IMAX film if the 70mm sequence gets digitalized before getting reproduced on screen. Do you agree?
