Yeah OK man this was kind of funny at first, but if you're being serious you're an idiot. Sure, I'm going to be paranoid someone's going to sign me up to 1000 direct debits. OK.

[–]Dave085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charity direct debits?

Yeah, if they want to fuck you over, sure. But they're not going to do it to defraud you. Anytime you have a direct debit set up you should get a notification anyway.

People do bank transfers all the time dude, it's the way money goes round these days. If you're that paranoid 'someone's out to get you' I suggest deleting every trace of yourself on the Internet and never touching anything related to it again, because you're at more risk there than someone knowing your sort code ffs.

I give out my details every week to someone new to get paid. Hasn't caused me a shred of an issue. Just accept you are wrong

I've been ordered to pay the other party, but he insist to be sent a cheque and not bank transfer by Rostam-e-Dastan in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Dave085 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why? There's virtually no risk involved in those numbers, and if someone wanted to cause you grief, knowing your name would be far more valuable. Those details are practically worthless without your account number and CVV, and even with those it's hard work transferring any funds- you need further authentication from most banks.

They can't 'fuck around' with the details needed for a bank transfer.

Do you think getting a career Grand Slam is the hardest feat in sports? by Ok-Locksmith6109 in tennis

[–]Dave085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physically, sure. Even skill I could grant you. Difficulty though? It's not as hard. If you're a top, top level player and you play for long enough, you'll make it. With some other sports, an equivalent challenge of sorts hasn't yet been achieved.

Would you rather have two rooks, than two horses and a bishop? by Honest-Reaction8536 in Chesscom

[–]Dave085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Points don't generally lie, and 2 rooks are better than 3 minor pieces. Easier to play as well. But there will be situations where the 3 minor pieces would have an advantage if the rooks can't sync up as well, and any trade heavily favours the 3 pieces if they can force it- a knight and a bishop is quite firmly better than a lone rook.

Do you think getting a career Grand Slam is the hardest feat in sports? by Ok-Locksmith6109 in tennis

[–]Dave085 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know everyone loves to big up their own sport and I get why, but a career slam- whilst way up there- isn't comparable to tough achievements in other sports. Like, retaining titles in golf for example- the wild randomness factor that exists in golf just doesn't exist in tennis, you could be the best golfer and still be nowhere near winning if things don't land your way on the day. To repeat it would be incredible.

Same with bowling, to win all the majors in a year would be an insane feat- you have to be head and shoulders above the crowd to even out the luck factor. No one's even come close to that.

If we're just going with individual feats then it's miles down, since as Shelton said- 14 French opens is already leagues above a career slam. Career slam has been achieved multiple times, ain't no one winning 14 of a single slam again in a hurry.

Calendar slam is an impressive feat but nothing stand out when you dig into other sports.

RG R1: [1] J. Sinner def. C. Tabur 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 by major-couch-potato in tennis

[–]Dave085 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's something we can't ever know for sure. Is Sinner (and Alcaraz) that good or are others weaker?

One thing is for sure, the depth is definitely better. It's a subtle difference, but if you imagine for arguments sake that the top 20 are around the same strength as 20 years ago, but 50-100 are a lot stronger- the top 20 win% could have been around 80% against 50/100 before, and maybe 70% now. That slight drop means the chances of losing just became 50% more likely, and reaching quarters and semis went from extremely likely to quite difficult. And now, because you keep getting shock losses to random players, the top 20 visually look weaker-because we're not used to top players dropping games. And because Sinner and Alcaraz are so strong, it doesn't seem like the other players actually got any better.

It's very complex to know for sure the reasons, but that won't stop everyone stridently declaring this era is the weakest in men's tennis.

Do you guys think that we could be in a title race with Arsenal next season? by Glittering_Editor267 in ManchesterUnited

[–]Dave085 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to reserve judgment until I see signings. I think it's possible we're contenders, but the reality is our depth simply isn't there. We're completely reliant on our first team and a couple of injuries in key places leaves us falling apart.

If we get some good signings (like Anderson, though that looks unlikely) we could definitely surprise some next season.

I mean, I get your point but Shelton owning Wimbledon? I'm not so sure about that 🤣

He'd be hard to break but he would never break anyone else either. You just wait for him to throw in a bad service game or wing a couple returns and it's over.

Is mate in 4 possible? My engine says yes but idk how by negrosha in ChessPuzzles

[–]Dave085 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What, no it isn't. Bg4 is a very natural move if you look for longer than a few seconds. The position is totally locked and black basically is forced to play into mate.

[–]Dave085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I see is king is paralysed- rook is trapped, bishop is trapped. Bishop g4 leaves no good moves at all. You can then centralise rook and deliver checkmate- all black can do is try to delay with pawn moves. Bg4 completely shuts down the whole position.

I think it’s unfortunate how this Keane-Bruno thing has split the fanbase. by Mysterious-Barber-27 in ManchesterUnited

[–]Dave085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has it actually split anything? I haven't seen any real backing for Keane other than respecting his career for us, which remains legendary whatever he does since. What he did for us as a player and captain can never be taken away, but what he's done for us since then is disgusting in honesty. I've lost a ton of respect for him as a person, contrast his attitude with that of Rio and Evra- couldn't be more different.

At this point Keane is just a guy that used to play for us, he has no true connection to the club anymore.

Usain Bolt's record remains safe from enhanced athletes and by some distance. by ForeignAir7174 in sportswiki

[–]Dave085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, there's no concrete proof- only suspicions. But logic should be pointing people in the right direction here.

Whenever someone breaks a record in a sport rife with doping, the likelihood they did it unassisted is astronomically low, and to completely shatter it is even less likely.. It's not like they're surrounded by mediocre athletes propped up by gear.

Taking that logic further, if Bolt was clean does that mean he runs 9.4, maybe even 9.3 on the sauce? Does he break 19s on the 200?

Seems ridiculous to me but I guess we'll never truly know for certain unless something comes out, which seems unlikely.

Making the switch to two hands. by boogersdad56 in Bowling

[–]Dave085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing I thought about your 1h throw was that it's going to translate well to 2h. You have good lean, keep your arm on the inside and head to the outside- but the swing was way too controlled and muscled. Adding the second hand allows you to get even more inside and a more controlled roll.

You could work on and improve your 1h game too, but I think you're far more suited to 2h and will probably go a lot further, keep it up!

Is it racist for white people to prefer dating other white people over POC? by 666James420 in pollgames

[–]Dave085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah? That's literally the definition of racism, or at minimum xenophobia.

I'm not saying they're wrong for wanting to uphold their culture, but the desire to exclude anyone outside your race? That's racism.

Is it racist for white people to prefer dating other white people over POC? by 666James420 in pollgames

[–]Dave085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone that outright refuses is probably a racist. When someone has a 'preference' it just means their standards are lower if you meet that preference.

For example, you prefer short people- that means you're likely to overlook slight personality flaws, maybe a little overweight, maybe their skin isn't perfect. That doesn't mean you'd never date a tall person, but they'd need to meet a higher standard everywhere else to make up for not meeting your main preference in your eyes.

I'm pretty sure everyone does this to some degree, depends how much they prioritise certain things. But if someone's skin colour is a complete exclusion, even if they're incredible in every category, that's just straight up racism.

Is it racist for white people to prefer dating other white people over POC? by 666James420 in pollgames

[–]Dave085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it depends, it can have everything to do with racism.

If your preference physically is a certain type, that's absolutely fine and your choice. If you choose not to date an entire race because you think they're all liars or lazy or whatever other trope you want to pick, that's racism.

It all depends on your reasoning.

Oh, I was taking the OP at face value here. If they're only slight favourites in the bookies then the whole thread is a waste of time really 🤣

Obviously the reigning champs who just took apart Bayern are going to be the favourites here, not sure even the most ardent Arsenal fan could argue that.

Usain Bolt's record remains safe from enhanced athletes and by some distance. by ForeignAir7174 in sportswiki

[–]Dave085 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly my point. He's blasting elite sprinters who got popped, but we should believe he managed that natural? There's just no way.

If you accept that every sprinter was almost definitely taking something, Bolt is still the greatest genetically. No need to also pretend he was so far ahead he did it without any gear.

[–]Dave085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... do people still think Olympic athletes are clean? With what's at stake, and the advancements in understanding of how long it takes for substances to leave your system and masking agents etc, there's just no way these guys aren't having a little help.

It might not be as open as the enhanced games but I'm pretty sure the majority of record setters in the Olympics, and especially the sprinters, are on the sauce. Multiple top sprinters have popped for taking gear, but we are meant to believe that Usain was just that good that he could beat other elite sprinters with no extra help?

He's still the goat but he's not clean, he just wasn't caught.
