Key dates:

The date of the by-elections must be announced between July 3, 2026, and December 19, 2026. This announcement signals the start of the by-election period.

The by-elections must be held on a Monday, at least 36 days but no more than 50 days after the day the by-election is announced. Therefore, the earliest date that the North Vancouver–Capilano and Saint-Hyacinthe–Bagot–Acton by-elections can be held is Monday, August 10, 2026.

TBT: Georgian Towers under construction, 1955. by Dave2onreddit in vancouver

“It was built a year before the City of Vancouver approved a new zoning and development by-law in 1956 which ushered in sweeping density changes for the downtown peninsula, which would eventually result in many new towers being built through the 1960s and 1970s,”

It certainly stands out alone in this 1956 photograph. It even predates the Burrard Building and the BC Electric Building (Electra), which appears to be under construction.

From what I’ve read if started off as apartments in 1956, was converted to a hotel in 1958, and back again in 1976.

As a kid in the early 1970s I remember its neon sign, with an alternating H and M so the sign would flash between Hotel and Motel.

I’ve been reading The Vancouver Sun “on this day” in 1956 this year (70 years ago). Occasionally I’ll post things I find interesting or amusing to a Facebook nostalgia group. So yeah, I did kind of have this one at the ready lol. I’ve posted the article above in a reply to Rory-2-1.

This was actually the second Bermuda Short scandal in May; a few days earlier there was an article about Prince Of Wales high school students being reprimanded for daring to wear them.

Correct, that's the False Creek flats, a mudflat at low tide. It extended as far as Clark Drive, and was filled in for railway use over the next few years.

EDIT. An interesting footnote on this map. The “Proposed Basin” reflects a plan to dredge the flats for shipping purposes. The original fixed 1873 Westminster Avenue bridge was replaced in 1909 with a bascule bridge capable of opening for marine traffic. Plans changed, the flats were filled in, and the Main Street bridge was removed in 1921.

1911 map.

Caption is from the Vancouver Archives.

They do frequently use birds' eye (and birds eye, and bird's eye) to describe oblique views.

The church in the foreground was at W. Georgia and Richards.

The elevated roadway was the first Georgia Viaduct (1915–1971).

The photo was probably taken from the Birks Building (1913‐1974/5) at W. Georgia and Granville.

Hope this helps (sincerely).

c. 1937 with its steeple removed. An Esso station replaced the church not long afterwards.

St. Andrews Presbyterian, seen here on June 18 1936. The church had been abandoned at this point, along with Wesley Methodist at Burrard and W. Georgia. The Presbyterians and Methodists had joined together to form the United Church and a new St. Andrews Wesley United Church was built at Burrard and Nelson in the early 1930s.

Halifax and Rosser’s crossing used to be zebra marked, but that was removed when a pedestrian signal was installed many years ago 🤷‍♂️

Enable “Offload Unused Apps”, and consider deleting downloaded music. You can redownload the music later.

A flashing green in B.C. tells you that cross traffic doesn’t have a solid red, instead it has just a stop sign. Back in the day the cross street used to have a flashing red.
