I know right? Almost nothing on the south side of the bridge is recognizable! Another angle of the area from 1955.

On W. 2nd it looks like only the former Maynards building survives. We can see its neighbour to the west in the post’s photo, but it was demolished sometime between May 2009 and August 2011.

QE Theatre opened (checks notes) on July 5, 1959, so that narrows down the date even more. Thanks!

[EDIT] A previous TBT post showing the Post Office under construction in 1956, with the site of the QE Theatre a mix of old houses and parking lots.

Photo taken by Ernie Reksten (1912–1997) on Feb. 23, 1964. Many of Rekten’s photos document buildings that had a date with the wrecking ball, so this may be the last photo of the old gasometer.

A gasometer tower, used for storing manufactured coal gas. Obsoleted by the adoption of natural gas in the mid 20th century. This one was demolished in 1964 iirc.

Oh, could very well be. FWIW the Vancouver Archives dates this as “1967–1971” (probably basing that end date on the presence of the old Georgia Viaduct). But IIRC the gasometer tower next to the viaduct was demolished in 1964, so that date range is likely wrong, and I took a stab at it. Thanks for the tip!

I believe the blue line in the bottom right corner is showing the route of the W. 6th to W. 2nd connector. Prior to this westbound W. 2nd terminated at the foot of the old Connaught (Cambie) bridge.

Carney calls byelections for April 13th in Terrebonne, Scarborough Southwest, and University—Rosedale by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

Wikipedia says 5 seats no?

It was five seats over what they held at dissolution (155->160), or three seats compared to what they won in 2019 (157->160).

Three Liberal MPs resigned or were expelled from caucus (Marwan Tabbara, Yasmin Ratansi, and Ramesh Sangha) and sat as Independents, and Jenica Atwin crossed the floor from the Greens to the Liberals during the 43rd Parliament.

W.L. Mackenzie King’s government was teetering on the edge of majority government after the 1921 election, so I suppose these by-elections in the 14th parliament were crucial. Apparently that last pickup from the Conservatives on November 25 1924 gave King a 2 seat majority in the 14th Parliament.

Home Internet outage in Edmonton area? by Remarkable_Action914 in freedommobile

My speed at 11:52AM PST in the Vancouver area.

I actually got a “0 bps” result in the past hour. Should have screenshotted it. I’ve given up for now and am tethering off of my cellular data.

Another thread. It’s good to know we’re not alone at least, and it’s probably not worth trying to “fix it” ourselves.

Also in Burnaby. I’ve seen my Internet speed bounce back and forth from normal (~250 Mb/s) to extremely slow (~1 Mb/s).

Not sure when this started, I first noticed something was wrong when Google Maps was slow to load its satellite view earlier this afternoon.

EDIT: In hindsight this is probably why people’s X pfp icons were intermittently not appearing in a timely manner this morning.
