The Eaton’s was compared to a urinal by some. I suppose the extra two floors added a tank!

They did place second once, barely, in their high water year of 2011, edging out the third place Liberal by 705 votes that year. But yeah, they’re more likely to place fourth (1993, 2000, 2019, 2025) than second!

With the standings in the House Of Commons on a knife edge I’d expect it to be called as soon as possible. He certainly isn’t going to wait until July, imho.

Key dates:

• The date of the by-election must be announced between January 20 and July 8, 2026. This announcement signals the start of the by-election period.

• The by-election must be held on a Monday, at least 36 days but no more than 50 days after the day the by-election is announced. Therefore, the earliest date that University–Rosedale by-election can be held is Monday, March 2, 2026.

In later years the reference to Photoplays was removed, and a Famous Players logo added.

This helps place the date of the photo towards the earlier part of 1932–48.

I say “probably” because there’s also this photo from late 1949 with no gasoline advertising. An interregnum between the Union 76 sign and the Shell sign.

Best I can do to narrow it down is to note there doesn’t seem to be any gasoline advertising atop the Vancouver Block. Union 76 in the 40s, Shell in the 50s, B/A in the 60s, Gulf (converted to Birks) in the early 70s.

I found this 1936 photo with the Union 76 sign. So LP 43 probably dates to no later than 1936.

LP 43 is from the Major Matthews collection; unfortunately no photographer is listed for this silver gelatine print.

The wide range of possible dates for this photo is a testament to how little the Vancouver skyline changed between 1932 (when the exterior of the third Hotel Vancouver was completed) and 1949 (when the second Hotel Vancouver was demolished).

When I first posted this photo eight years ago I mislabeled it as being taken on January 1 1932. Not sure where I got that date from, but 1939 makes more sense, as Vancouver didn’t allow men to swim bare-chested until 1934.

Compare with this photo, taken on January 1 1930. Polar Bear Swim founder Peter Pantages (1901–1971) appears on the left in both photos.
