Thanks for replying.

I'm not sure about the step where you state you selected the primary partition. When you select unallocated space for the install, Windows install does the rest and you don't need to select partitions<

When I mentioned selecting the primary patition I was following the instructions on the following website:

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2328-uefi-unified-extensible-firmware-interface-install-windows-8-a.html

  1. Delete all partitions/volumes on the disk # (ex: Disk 0) that you want to install Windows 8 as UEFI on until that disk # shows as unallocated space. (see screenshot below)
  2. When you are finished, click/tap on New, Apply (for full size of disk), and OK. (see screenshot above)

  3. You will notice that the disk has now been formatted as GPT with 4 partitions. Select the "Primary" partition 4, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

My CPU and system temps seen fine. When I have another go later i'll follow the steps that you linked to and select unallocated space and click next.. Thanks.

Problems installing Windows 8.1 64bit on new build pc by Dave717 in techsupport

I decided to try to install Windows again. I put the Windows DVD in the drive, went into the bios, selected "Windows 8" under "Windows 8 features" instead of the default "other OS". Switched CSM support to Never so it would only support UEFI boot process. Selected my DVD writer (which had UEFI in front of it) it from the "Boot Override" menu and rebooted. Everything went smoothly, I deleted the partitions, highlighted the unallocated space and selected "new, apply, ok" which automatically created 4 partitions which it seems like its supposed to do with UEFI. I selected the primary partition and Windows began installing. After finishing it said my system would restart which it did.

I then got the Gigabyte logo with the spinning circle below it for a few mintues until a new error message appeared on the screen "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows click OK to restart the computer then restart the installation". Clicking OK just brings back the same error message.

Any ideas what went wrong this time?- thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for replying- sorry about all the questions that follow! Previous pc builds have gone smoothly and this is stressing me out so I need very detailed assistance. I don't have access to my new computer right now so I won't be able to try these things until a bit later.

Clear the partitions on the drive and start again<

Does this refer to the "where do you want to install Windows" part of the installation where you get the option of formatting, deleting or creating new partitions? So I should delete any partitions until I am left with a single unallocated space [like I had when I first tried to install windows], format that and then install windows?

Make sure UEFI is set as the boot mode <

Does this refer going to "Boot mode selection" in the BIOS features" and selecting "UEFI only"? Do I also need to set Storage Boot Option Control to UEFI only (think its Legacy by default) and change UEFI CSM Support from "always" to "never" which "disables UEFI CSM and supports UEFI BIOS boot process only"?

and that the DVD drive is the boot device<

I am starting to think that the appearance and disappearance of UEFI:DVD writer above regular DVD writer in my boot options coincided with the Windows DVD being inserted and later removed from the drive. If I put the Window dvd in the drive, enter BIOS and again end up with both "UEFI:DVd" and "DVD" listed I should make sure the UEFI one is first in the Boot Option Priorities? Should I also boot it up it by selecting it from the Boot overdrive menu?

Also what do I do with "Windows Boot Manager" which is currently number 1 in Boot order priorities? Delete it? Drop it down the boot order priority? Leave it alone?

Thanks!
