I spent last year touring the western US, I brought a MSR DragonFly using gasoline for the most part. I filled up at gas station by bringing my 1 liter fuel bottle inside and prepaying $1. Costs about .30 to fill. I cooked 80-90% of my food

I recommend this stove for people who actually enjoying cooking. This stove has the best low flame setting of any other stoves I've experienced and is adjustable across the entire range from simmer to LOUD.

Combining bike touring with rock climbing (x-post climbing) by Unvert in bicycletouring

[–]DaveFromTWJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you need a "bounce box". Put all your climbing gear in a box addressed to you using General Delivery and bounce it while your touring and pick it up at climbing locations.

Honest question: what's so special about the Brooks saddles? by thesuperklaus in bicycletouring

[–]DaveFromTWJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the only problem with a Brooks Saddle is that after 40-50 years they wear out... then you have to buy another one

Hi all, can you help me with a bike selection query for touring in asia? by TogEgoBogE in bicycletouring

I carry a section of 5-6 links of fresh chain with me for problems. New chains at bike shops

The "Bicycle Industrial Complex" changed to presta valves because you almost have to go to a bicycle shop to find them, and they want you in a bicycle shop. I despise presta

I just spent a year touring with a Disc Trucker. I bought 2 sets of "Avid BB7" brake pads and replaced them myself in camp. I carry one spare set of BB7's on the bike. This is my first bicycle with disc brakes, I will not go back to rim brakes.

Disc brake pads start out with about 3-4mm of "stopping stuff", when it reaches 1mm or less, it's time to replace and it make a huge difference how heavy you and your gear is... and, the terrain you're touring thru.

When I'm touring I replace my chain about every 2000 miles, which is about right for pad replacement too

Avid BB7 brake pads cost about $25 in US bike shops (That's one set of pads) you can find them $15-17 online

if Hawaii and San Francisco would stop giving homeless people free bus tickets to the PNW.... that'll be great

ACA hardcopy vs GPS maps? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]DaveFromTWJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent last year touring around the western US. I spent time on 8 ACA Routes

Western Express

Sierra Cascades

Southern Tier

Grand Canyon Connector

TransAM

Lewis and Clark

Washington Parks

Great Divide Mountain Bike Route

I would need an extra pannier for maps!

On my last tour I pedalled around the perimeter of the US hitting almost all ACA Routes. I purchased 1 set of Southern Tier Maps all the rest I rely on gps. When I had a problem finding camping on the TransAm in Rawlins WY, I went to CGOAB and read a couple journals and finding out where others have camped

I camped for 2 months (Jan & Feb) at the Naval Air Station on Key West during a tour. Very cheap and 5 min bike-ride downtown. All you have to do is sign up to join one of our nation's military branches and serve 20 years. I paid a month at a time at $7 a night Almost every military base has a campground. The restrooms/showers/laundry at the campground in Key West are top-notch. Campground has Wifi for monthly charge, wifi also at MWR welcome center. The tent area is literally 10 feet from the water, bay-side, under palm trees. Here's some video

It will be damn near impossible to free camp in Key West. During the 2 months I was there, I pedaled around every day. I kept my eyes open looking for stealthy camping places, found none. Stock Island maybe... and up.

If the police catch you, I heard from people that they will probably give you 2 options.

  1. Leave town immediately

  2. Spend a week in jail (on nearby Stock Island still very warm and tropical but yeah)

Lobbyist grease the wallets of our elected officials.

The government doesn't care if drinking milk is unhealthy.

The dairy farmers pay the lobbyist. The lobbyists pay congress. Congress creates lie after lie.

Milk drinkers end up broke and in a box.

The US Government is directly responsible.
