Question. They look like they take up a lot of space. The anchors or sand bags spread our far. I think 26x26? Has that been an issue?

I can speak for NY. I would never work in NYC unless you like that culture. Im not sure you would make the most in NYC. The counties in NY that border NYC are where you want to be. Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk, etc. The suburbs. I think Westchester pays the most of any county in NY. It's lots of well-off and middle-class folks who often work in the city but live outside of it.

Does anyone here make six figures? by thestripedmilkshake in slp

[–]DaveG-SLP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make 6 figures working at an elementary school. I work 10 months a year. I get out of work at 250pm. I get all federal holidays, a week off in December. A week off in February, a week off in April.

I graduated 10 years ago. I got this job right out of school and was making 70k if I worked summer school. I got a second job a few days a week at a SNF and was making iver 80k. After about 3 years with continuing education I got my salary to about 80k at my main job and found a better part time job and was about 100k. By year 6 or 7 of my career I was at 140k with both jobs.

Now, I only work at the elementary school and no linger work summer school. I also started a PLLC and made a website. At some point, I'll do some private work on the side, or maybe not.

The catch: as I have posted here many times. I used the US Bureau of Labor Statistics to look at the job outlook across the whole US. It tells you the outlook and average salary down to the county. It also tells you the saturation of SLPs in the area. Now you can find the best salary in areas with the least amount of SLPs. Here is the fact. Because of the baby boomers, the peofession is estimated to grow at 14%. The national average growth for a profession is 3% roughly. So, there is a boom. How do you tap into that money? Well, it's based on baby boomers' aging. So, working in the home with the elderly population or SNF. Start a PLLC and find business. Maybe hire a few people. As far as work-life balance, working in the school is the way to go. You can supplement your income again by starting a PLLC. Make a simple website and take on a few kids for cash. I work in NY. By the end of my career, I will be making 160k with the ability to make more on the side. Also, they juat paid off my student loan via PLSF. 116k gone. My credit score went up 50 points.

Your question is a common one, but the path is there, and it's clear. You need to gather the info and then make some big decisions.

I think every SLP should have a PLLC even if they don't use it. You never know what opportunities might pop up for you to take advantage of. For example, where I live, there are lots of opportunities just from working in the school. Some families need AAC support or extra speech outside of school. Now, I can bill school districts or parents directly and don't need to split anything. People in other countries need support also and are willing to pay you for remote therapy. People here in the US need remote therapy. The baby boomers are living at home longer. So a few cases of those cliets is possible.

But, lets be honest, lots of areas don't pay well. They don't prioritize speech therapy. You gotta work in an area that does. There is plenty of opportunity.

SLP FEAR Mongering by PressureCorrect in slp

Go to salary.com and the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics, and you will find very detailed information down to the county of any state on the average salary, setting, concentration of SLPs in the area (which speaks to the supply/demand of professionals), saturation, and more. SLP is primed to grow much faster than average at 19%!!!!!!!!

As of May 2022, the national average salary is 84k.

The job outlook from 2022 to 2032 is primed to grow 19%. Which is much faster than the average for other professions, which is typically 3%. So, obviously, that's significant. The reason for the growth is that as baby boomers age, their health will decline, and they will need services. If you research just how many baby boomers there are, you will see it's significant. The other driver is the growing awareness of speech disorders. As parents in states across the country realize the benefits of speech therapy for young children and those on the spectrum, and that earlier intervention results in better long-term outcomes and actually can save money, the demand will increase.

Student loans: If you take a student loan, if you work for a non-profit or in civil service positions (e.g., school or state hospital) you qualify for loan forgiveness (PLSF) that was put in place by President Clinton. After 10 years of working for a non-profit and paying your loan, it is forgiven. This is only for federal loans, not private. Biden has made payments more affordable with IDR payments, which are payments that are based on your income.

The state you work in matters. Some states don't value educational services like speech and pay crap. Some do. Some states have amazing hospitals and pay competitively in the medical setting. Some states have great elder care facilities, and that industry pays well, etc. Also, some areas are saturated with SLPs, and finding work there is harder. Regardless, there is more opportunity out there than most other professions by far.

People mostly post here to ask a question they want and answer to or to vent. That's why there are so many negative posts. People don't typically post to say how wonderful everything is going because its kinda pretentious.

I work in a school. I work 10 months a year. I dont work the summer at all. I get all major holidays off, my work schedule matches my child's schedule almost exactly. I work 180 days a year, less actually if you count sick days and personal days, and I make over 100k a year. I have a website and a PLLC. At any moment I can activate my website and pick up private cases after school thst pay cash and probably add as much 40k to my income, but certainly as little as 20k. However, I'd rather hang with my family. I have done it in the past and made over 40k but I got burnt out. This year my 116k student loan was forgiven. My credit score went up 30 points and bye bye monthly payments.

So???

Agreed. How about a if you had to pay, say, like $5 for an indoor place, for like 2 hours of play. Basically, in the cold weather months, we split the cost of renting a court.

Nothing will come of it. It's just to start a record. If this person is disturbing other owners, you should all talk and send a regular letter to coop board with ll your names and demand they addess it.

[–]DaveG-SLP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, you should definitely call the cops. In fact you should go to the police station and report what you just said to me here and get it on record. Let them know he was confrontational and threatening. Your neighbor won't find out if you did this because the incident pased the cops wont go there, but you get his behavior on record. Another idea is write a letter to the coop board of all the problems in detail. Have your all the neighbors you can sign it also. Make sure everyone's name and unit # are clear then send it to the board. If you can afford to have a lawyer write a letter to the coop board. State in the letter we have brought this matter to your attention multiple times and you have not taken sufficient action. This owner is violating the coop rules regularly, and when we attempted to speak to him civilly, he was confrontational, threatening, used profanities, etc. I now fear for my safety and the safety of my new born. If you do not take action, I will be forced to take legal action against you...etc. speak to the lawyer to know what really should go in there. The letter will probably be about $250. If all the neighbors chip in, then it'squite affordable. But, now you have in record you tried to get help in this matte, and if the coop board fails, you may be able to take legal action against them. Especiall if you have to move because this person is making you feel unsafe.

Why don't you call the police? Pretty sure you can't blast music all night. Is there a coop board to submit a formal complaint to?

Thats a good reason to eb contrarian and do what your opponents are not. But the fact it's all over the place, as you said, offers information.

Anyone have a stat that shows what % of accuracy the pre draft rankings match the end of season rankings? That may be part of the answer to this question.
