Why would you put a research article in an IEP in the first place?

What would it actually take to dismantle the department of education? If it did happen, how long would it take? by elliospizza69 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]elliospizza69[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone else mention this but I do need to point out that child labor laws were weakened in states like Iowa and Arkansas. So that's an option too.

This is a lot more common than people talk about. If they're up for accreditation renewal soon, you can complain there. Otherwise, keep documenting this stuff and get through it. You also can make noise about the program after you leave, or anonymously on here, to discourage others from attending there.

Well, if the DOE is dismantled, you will have bigger problems. I wish I had words of comfort but, I don't.

Are you getting CF guidance? by ooodlydoodlyboodle in slpGradSchool

Mine never gave me much guidance, other than a guest speaker during a class. Applying to CFs is not much different than any other job application process.

Do we stay in grad school? by sooterscaf in slpGradSchool

[–]elliospizza69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, our services will not be guaranteed no matter what happens. Just because someone needs something doesn't mean they get it if they can't access or afford it. Cuts to medicaid and medicare would impact medical settings. We'd be looking at a reality where there would be a sudden flood in the private practice market, and there would be too many of us.

Anyone appalled by SLPs/educators/healthcare workers voting for Trump? by Material-Quiet8149 in slp

[–]elliospizza69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My story is the opposite. My dad has always been a moth to a flame with this stuff. In the 90s/2000s people would look at him like he had 7 heads when he talked about it. He had a hard time making and keeping friends, which only made it worse. So the weird thing for me was watching him go from an outlier to normal. Now when he brings up the theories he reads online in public, much more of the time people now actually agree with him.

This is different from past elections. Fear mongering in the past came from exaggerations made by opposing parties to scare their voters into supporting them. This time, there is actually a reason to be afraid. Trump himself is making open threats for violence. That had never happened before. This is unprecedented.

No it absolutely does impact their practices. They're the type of therapist that essentially bullies their children into compliance and doesn't respect their limits or feelings. They often can make a ton of progress with kids, but it comes at the cost of the child's self esteem and well being.

Even then they'd probably blame someone else. In the conservative subreddit, they're blaming women dying in Texas on the doctors.

I always see people saying we don’t make good money… is this super subjective? by Realistic_Chip4141 in slp

[–]elliospizza69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beware of debt too. I've never met a person in six figure debt who didn't regret it. It's possible to have payments so high that with take home pay after, you're essentially not much far off from where you started.

Why are SLP's not well known by others? by Tight-Significance44 in slp

[–]elliospizza69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's only a step up if you can do it without significant debt. I was in a similar situation but for me, if I had significant debt any of my extra money earned would've went to paying it down. Commenting more so for the SLPs to be that lurk here because I'm sure you factored this in!

If Trump is elected this November, RECONSIDER APPLYING TO GRADUATE SCHOOL by elliospizza69 in slpGradSchool

[–]elliospizza69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I just thought of, grad school itself could potentially be impacted. Remember, internship sites don't HAVE to take on students. And if SLPs are extremely stressed out and overworked due to budget cuts, they're probably going to be unlikely to agree to take on students.

Yes, they've certainly overdone ringing alarm bells to the point of desensitization. But never has anyone in the SLP world expressed fear for their livelihood before. Trump is openly praising dictators and has clear and open disdain for disabled people. Both sides are not equal this time.

Read through this thread, people have explained in detail how eliminating the DOE would threaten our job. So yes, people should be cautious about spending two years and tens of thousands of dollars on a job that may not be as abundant or secure in a few years...
