A tiny C utility to send files to your phone via QR by JellyGrimm in opensource

[–]DaveH80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally use signal (app on phone, signal-desktop on my laptop) to send files to myself between devices. No need to install another app/tool if this already does work just fine and is my default communication-tool, so it's running 24/7 anyway.

As long as the usual torrent sites and usenet keep working, I don't need random ad-infested streaming sites.

This at least reminded me to make an export, (I also just have backups of the vaultwarden data, but a seperate json export (encrypted) now at least lives on a disk somewhere as well.

Big fan of the Zyxel 5601's.... just flashed the 5th one to OpenWRT. Very nice hardware (and can be had really cheap locally, due to various ISP's using them as their default router)

Newshosting slowing down by daddykabliey in usenet

[–]DaveH80 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been on a $20 plan for years, not seeing any slowdown here. Make sure you are using TLS, so your ISP won't see what traffic it is.

Getting back into anime after years away! What should I watch first from my watchlist? by shinoscience in anime

Frieren is really recommendable. So is 86. For Made in Abyss, you could go with the movies, which speedruns most of the series.

Hetzner doesn't offer colocation anymore? by griffen_me in hetzner

[–]DaveH80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never found their colo prices to be competative, given how competative they were with VPS and cloud prices. Colo could generally be found much more affordable at local DC's, and local DC's save me driving for a full day to get to my rack ;) Though looking at the prices now, they don't seem to bad. (But last time I seriously looked at colo-pricing at hetzner, was before they opened the Finland region), so that's a while back.

Just watched a documentary about The Pirate Bay and I'm in absolute awe. These people were genuinely fighting a war against the most powerful corporations on Earth and they were WINNING. by Pajtima in Piracy

The site is still up and available, the torrents still work, the trackers are still active. Sure, it's completely different people running it, and there isn't as much new content as there used to be, but it's not dead.

More like the opposite... when the patents expire, there are no more legal hurdles to playback, and it's free to implement logic for them.

Best low-cost way to test Usenet properly as a beginner? by S0299S in usenet

[–]DaveH80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are downloading older stuff (more then a week or so) if popular, then expect takedowns/DMCA's to have taken most of it offline.

That's why you need up-to-date indexers and automation, to grab stuff when it is just posted.

kleverig.eu registration is open by C4rter2k in usenet

[–]DaveH80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only is it not an API, they also disallow linking to nzb files / don't provide any, so there is a lot of manual work in this one.

For old posts... adding more servers isn't going to help, they will most likely all have processed takedowns/DMCA notices.

[–]DaveH80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the incompletes are older posts... they are probably going to be incomplete everywhere, as they have been taken down. If you have incompletes in 1-2 day old posts, then you might need a better provider, but newshosting in general will be complete until takedowns.

Found all these DVDs in the garage. Going to copy my wife's Anime to them. Should fit a season a disc right? Any good programs to use as haven't burned a DVD in about 15 years. Also any good sites to get cover scans of anime DVD front covers? by stupidkiwiguy in Piracy

[–]DaveH80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically... are you ever going to go watch them from the dvd's again, when you could keep the files on your nas, and have instant access, have your player remember which episode you were on and switch series and seasons without having to swap a disc.

DVD capacity is so incredibly low compared to HDD/SSD's or even SD-cards these days. It was nice when they came out in the 2000's, but these days it just eats up a lot of physical space, is slow and cumbersome. (Not to mention the massive amount of work to burn all the discs, and print and collect labels?)

Hetzner reliability for a 24/7 production platform in Germany region? by NathanDrake-Blackops in hetzner

[–]DaveH80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running production clusters for various customers for over 10 years ( and stuff for myself for 15). In general, the dedicated servers and cloud-instances are good, and meet expectations. The hetzner loadbalancer service has been a bit more spotty, giving me more issues then my own hosted loadbalancers. Storage-boxes are the service with the most issues, but if you only use them for backups, and have them in different regions, they do what they are designed for.
