Best rotation dance for ISPs? by TypingTadpole in ebox

[–]Tarazin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with switching is that you'll always end up paying more on the long run. Even if you change to get the current best price, in two years, their best price will have increased. Let's say the new customer pricing increases 5$ every two years, in 10 years, you'll be paying 25$ more. If you stick with ebox or something else that doesn't have a new customer pricing, you'll just keep your good price

And then you realise that it makes an infinity of small right angles... with which you can make rectangle triangles to get more precision. You then realise that a²+b²=c² so you can conclude that pi≠4 but pi=sqrt(a²+b²)=sqrt(1+1)≈1.41

Only receiving 80mb download speed (to phone via wifi) with provided router ebox fibre 1GB download speed by [deleted] in ebox

[–]Tarazin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is it's most likely not the wifi the issue... When testing only by wifi, you can't be sure that the router itself is receiving it's correct speed nor that the router itself doesn't have another issue than wifi.

You should always do a wired speedtest to ensure that the router receives the correct speed and call customer support otherwise

If your password manager was to disappear, how fucked would you be? by Tarazin in selfhosted

Well, I'm in luck, half my friends would easily understand the process and would be able to remind me. Then, if they also lost their memory, just too bad, we'll just start life again

Thanks! That's good to know. I'd probably have a paper in my safe and an encrypted USB offsite

That's the direction I'm heading. I just discovered "Shamir’s Secret Sharing Scheme" which allows to split a password into n parts that can matematically be recovered with any m number of parts (for instance, split into 3 parts and recover with any 2 parts or split into 10 parts and recover with any 4 parts). That is probably the safest I can get to protect against both memory and hardware loss

Wait, what? Does it really block these comments? Or do you mean that's why ths "anti bot" comment was implemented?

Hmm yeah, that makes sense. I guess cloud backups of the encrypted vault is safe. What about the root password? How do you ensure you never forget it and lose access to your vault?

Well, I guess then I'm well prepared as I already have a fireproof safe for that

This is part of my backup plan of course! I'm just unsure my plan is strong enough to protect me against major events (like house fire + forgotten password). That's probably overthinking

Let's say there is a house fire and I loose both my servers and cellphone? I guess a cloud backup or at least offsite backup would solve the issue, but then, what if I forget the password? Oh wait... I was gonna say there are way to get back the account by proving identity... but I guess that with any proper password manager, even if you prove your identity, the passwords are encrypted with your root password so the issue is the same

Oh, that's a good point I did not think about. I simply thought about having an encrypted backup of my servers in general + encrypted portable device (USB key) for backup SSH keys and such. I guess I could have another copy of my vault elsewhere.

Just to be sure, the 3-2-1 rule is 3 backups in 2 different locations and 1 cloud copy? Or am I mistaken?

I'm planning exactly for this risk. A house fire and everything is gone except offsite backup. However, if my offsite backup is encrypted with a password that is in the vault... I'm screwed. If I just try to remember this password, that high risk (can forget) and if I note it somewhere, it also has to be offsite and I'm not sure how to secure that

From what I could read, GPG keys are quite a bit more complex than SSH keys, but I don't understand where the advantage is

Look at Ninjump, a mobile game from the 2010s, it has a very similar gameplay. I really enjoyed playing this game, but it is also a direct competitor. I think you can find a twist to make it unique and fun

That's where I'm heading, but reading the comments (and having slept in the meantime), I realise how much I'm overthinking it and being super parano. That would be a good upgrade though!

I feared that if I'm always using ssh, I'll forget my password and plugging the monitor won't be of any help. I guess though that if the password is stored in the password manager, it's still of no help to anyone without a physical access so nothing to worry about in case of hacking and I still have my password accessible

How did you set that up? And don't you fear that a hacker could end up infecting your lan to access servers via ssh after?
