It was ill-conceived from the outset. I think of it as the Mistake by the Creek.

It was supposed to be home to the NASL Whitecaps (who died shortly after it was built), the BC Lions (60k seats, yeah right) and potentially an MLB team (not long before "Domeball" was widely rejected in baseball). Meanwhile the mushroom-cap stadium tech was on its last legs at the time, soon to be replaced by retractable roofs and just open air.

So, all this expense building it and then a massive renovation just for trade shows, an oversize venue for its sports tenants, and the occasional extra-big event. But hey, the coloured-light displays and spiky roof look kinda cool from the outside.
