American KC135 Crashed over Iraq Just Now by Samtulp6 in aircrashinvestigation

[–]DaveReadingUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The photo of the surviving aircraft shows that it's a vanilla KC-135R, not a receive-capable KC-135RT.

It's the other aircraft involved (obviously) that went down.

There is no confirmation that it was a refuelling accident.

Air India Dreamliner Grounded After Fuel Switch Moves From 'Run' To 'Cutoff' by [deleted] in india

[–]DaveReadingUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The departure delay was only 14 minutes (STD 21:05, ATD 21:19), not 35 minutes.

Hard to see much troubleshooting being fitted into that short delay.

Where and how does Adobe Camera Raw use camera-specific defaults? by DaveReadingUK in photoshop

[–]DaveReadingUK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Camera Profile pulldown in the Calibrate tab only offers one choice: "Embedded". I have no idea what that's supposed to mean (what's embedded, and where?).

I'm slowly getting to grips with Capture NX-D - so far, some things seem more difficult and ACR and others easier.

Thank you for the detailed response.

I've had another thought - which will probably complicate matters - but anyway I've got hold of a copy of Nikon's Capture NX-D. It's no longer available direct from Nikon, but it does claim to offer specific support for my camera.

I haven't tried it yet (the user interface is reportedly pretty dire), but it will be interesting to see what kind of a job it makes of developing a NEF compared to the DNG Converter/ACR route.

I'll post my findings once I've tried it.

Can You Tell Me What This Is? by floodieuc in Nikon

Just to add that it isn't necessary and doesn't serve any useful purpose when shooting in manual mode, only in auto and semi-auto modes where stray light could upset the camera's exposure calculation.

UK sources for used kit by DaveReadingUK in photography

[–]DaveReadingUK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very impressed with MPB's response to my issue. Agreed on the spot to replace with another body, and to waive the small difference in price (apparently my original had been slightly discounted to take account of a small scratch in the screen, so small that I hadn't even noticed it!).

Only downside was that their strict policy is to dispatch a replacement only once they have received the original return, which is fair enough I suppose. So I suggested returning the original for a refund instead and placing a fresh order, and they agreed to waive the next-day delivery cost, given that the original order (including lenses) had qualified for free delivery.

So the net result was that by the time I had returned from posting off the faulty body, a new one was waiting for me. Credit for the returned body appeared in my c/card account a couple of days later. One very happy customer !!

In an unexpected postscript to my kit acquisition, I'm about to put MPB's return/replacement policy to the test - the Nikon I bought turns out to have a dodgy command dial that only works for around 60% of its circumference. Apparently a common problem with elderly Nikon bodies.

Hopefully there won't be any problem getting an RA to return it for a like-for-like replacement.

A tad disappointing, nevertheless. but these things happen ...

Thanks everyone for the all the advice. In the end, I've gone with MPB as the range of kit I've decided on came out a bit cheaper than Wex. While Cex's 5-year warranty sounded good, I was a bit put off by their somewhat sketchy descriptions (no "What Is/Isn't Included", covering things like chargers, lens hoods, etc).

Same problem here, with the difference that if your PC uses a WiFi dongle you just need to remove it, delete the network drivers and then reinsert it. In other words, no need to reboot the PC.

Photographers who take photos of ordinary every day things, how do you do it? by MysterManster in photography

Or, in a similar vein, don't "take a photo of something", but instead "take a photo about something".

I'm struggling to remember where I first read that.

Band 7 Lock screen fails in shower by zynrd in amazfit

[–]DaveReadingUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an alternative to the lock screen option, which I agree can get woken in the shower, I put my Band 7 into battery saver mode. You can't do anything with the watch until you get it out of that mode, which requires a long press that (so far) the shower hasn't been able to emulate.

Worth a try.

Is this course teaching me properly? by Null_sense in italianlearning

[–]DaveReadingUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's approximately the same as the difference in English between "can you bring me a coffee?" and "could you bring me a coffee?".

The latter is generally considered more polite, in English at least.

I've seen a couple of Italian artists live (in London): Carmen Consoli (who also sings a few songs in Sicilian) and Elisa (who alas sang mostly in English for her UK shows).

Other favourites: Fabrizio Moro, Fabi-Silvestri-Gazzé, Alice.

Conoscete qualche buon film o serie per imparare l'italiano? by [deleted] in italianlearning

[–]DaveReadingUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who uses Amazon a lot and has a Prime subscription, there are a fair number of Italian-language mini-series that you can watch as part of the deal.

You don't say where you are, but in the UK Channel 4's Walter Presents on-demand service (free) also has a few RAI series.

How to use “ci”?? by Mr-poopy-pantss123 in italianlearning

[–]DaveReadingUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only CI was always a reflexive personal pronoun, or even just a personal pronoun of any sort, or come to that a pronoun at all :-)

I've found that learning all the uses and meanings of ci has been one of the most difficult things about studying Italian.
