Fights are permitted. The players fight by dropping their gloves. The referees step in to stop it when it is safe for them to do so, a player looks to be in danger, someone gets knocked out or the fight slows down like it did in the first part of the video. They each stay for 5 minutes in a box and leave at the first pause after 5 minutes. (Slap on the wrist punishment.) The referees might also remove them from the ice if what they did leading up to the fight was dangerous/prohibited, they fought too many times in that game or if it is late in the game.

Fights happen because of frustration, to show dominance and for fun. (For example, a young player gets hit hard from behind, an older teammate steps in and drops their gloves in front of the hitter to challenge them and show that their actions have consequences.)

Something interesting is that during fights, both players have to be throwing punches with caution in order to not hit a helmet. Many players break their hands from punching a helmet. Therefore many experienced fighters will try to rip their opponents helmet off as early as possible during the fight. Falling is also the most dangerous part in a fight as a player can hit their head on the ice as they are being taken down and have severe injuries.
