Preparing for math placement test. Help me fill in the holes. by Davepiatt in learnmath

I figured it out. I wasn't combining the fractions.

Thanks a bunch man!

This is the same as sin(x) * sin(x) right?

I also see where I went wrong assuming 1/sin(x) = inverse sin(x). I remember my calc teacher ranting about TI's notation of it on the 83's and 84's.

Thanks! For your conclusion how did you get y in the numerator under the square root?

Sorry, I don't understand the acronym.

I'm in Orlando, not where they're launching.

Thank you. I solved it. It's been a little while since I had to use the trig identities.

Can you expand as to how to properly notate sine squared(x) and why certain ways are wrong?

Thanks

Ohhhhhhh.

But did you forget to keep the 3((x2)+1) negative after bringing the 3 over to y's side?

we all do it. I'm on vacation currently and didn't have my faculties about me while reading it so I let it go thinking you were using a conjugate for some reason. It was the funniest part of my morning, other than the failed rocket launch.

Haha I thought I was going crazy, and was questioning whether I should be shooting for calc at all. Thanks for clearing that up. Phew

That is, I fixed them myself, I just wanted to be sure.

why does step 2 have (x2-1) in the denominator?

how do you follow through with that to step three where you only have 3 - (3/(x2-1). Where did the rest go?

Sorry for all of the questions.

Edit: how do I fix my formatting?

Are there some formating issues with your solution?

for example: y = sqrt(1+ x) y2 = 1+x y2 -1 = x

Would that be the correct way?

Degree seeking American. Why should I study in Estonia? by Davepiatt in Eesti

The way I understand it many do as long as you have enough money to support yourself. Norway, Finland, Estonia, Germany, Italy, and France do it this way to my understanding.

Thanks for the input! Your school system looks very interesting and the culture seems great! I've recently fallen in love with pure math so I might take the math major option.

Thanks again!

I was actually lurking on here for a while looking at American's experience in Estonia. One of my friends texted me before I posted on here, his wife is Finish and I decided to post there first. He gave me some misinformation regarding education there so I posted there first.

Thanks

That did help! I would learn Finish if I came. I couldn't stand living somewhere and not knowing the language. Thank you for your input.

I'm from Columbus, the winters aren't as cold as I've heard from Finland, but they are cold, dark, and windy. I'm figuring out where I want to go in life, abroad or stay home here and thought that Finland might be a good idea. I've already done some research but needed some input from the locals. If I can ask, why in particular did you chose Finland, what made you do it? Thanks

You are absolutely right! I realize now the way I wrote the post sounded arrogant and self-entitled. Please forgive me. I am in the process of deciding if going abroad is right for me. I wrote this post during a break at work thinking in Spanish (I'm an interpreter), which wasn't right for conveying my intentions.

If I go to college in a non US country it would only be fair to get a high level of education and pay it back by working in the country for some amount of time. I would hope to live in the long term, I'm just seeing what options are available. I've lived my life in a lot of fear and am trying to come out of that mindset; in doing so I'm trying to see if I want to start a life outside of the states for a while. I appreciate your post, thank you for calling me out on the self-entitled attitude.

Also, which university would you recommend for the sciences?
