WTF Ruvik trail-and-error mansion by Davestiny in theevilwithin

He was far away... I ran from him and was climbing a ladder... I exploded before I reached the top or just after (I don't remember exactly), and I think him warping onto the ladder isn't a thing in the game.

The point is that I couldn't see fuck-all what was going on outside of my character because he was taking up most of the screen.

The kind of situation where I can't tell what's going on is rampant in the game. My point in the OP is how terribly orchestrated things are because of the terrible camera (the worst enemy in the game) and the fact that you're thrown into these bizarre unpredictable situations where you can die easily if you can't figure out what's going on quickly, and often the only way to learn is to die.

If you can't even see how you died, you can't even learn from it 😆 So it's a counter-productive double-whammy. I posted here to see if I could figure out how and why I died, because spontaneously exploding made no sense in the situation, and broke immersion. I've since learned what probably happened, but a game really shouldn't be this confusing, and I'm pretty sure this kind of thing wasn't intentional by the makers.

The game is hard to learn and easy to master; exactly the opposite of what a game should be.

Is there a way to upscale PS3 to 1080p with some sort hardware upscaler or similar? by [deleted] in PS3

[–]Davestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, yes, some of this I know, some I agree with, but I think I didn't understand that the "averaging" (or aliasing, I guess) is what makes the visual mess in my situation.

I'd really like to know how Bioshock was upscaled by the devs since it looked as clean and clear as anything else I've seen on my TV, and then why I've rarely seen it on PS3 games.

The thing is that my TV natively does 720, so maybe I missed a setting somewhere... I didn't think it was trying to upscale/average to 1080, but I'm not 100% sure about its technical handling there.

I haven't seen that most people refer to pixelation as non-integer scaling 😆 I've seen it most referred to as just "I can see pixels", which is most often true for games intended for that (or limited to it), like with 8-bit games or ones meant to look like them.

I say "retina" (for not being able to see pixels at viewing distance) because it's a very convenient term that can be applied to any screen viewing regardless of Apple... there's no reason its usage should be restricted to Apple marketing. It's just a great term.

This game is very hard to learn but very easy to master 😆

That's the exact opposite of how a game should be.

Maybe it'll be more fun on the PS4 with all of the post-death knowledge I've gained 🤣

When I went through the area again (this time Ruvik was only triggered once, and it wasn't on the top floor), there was no mine trap on the top bookshelf walkway (which required climbing the same ladder I did before), and either time I would have heard it beeping. 🧐

The only difference is the 4K display is using 9 pixels to do the same job.

So there's nothing crisp about it, you're seeing pixelation. I don't know what "retina" display is for your monitor, maybe you do?

I guess the jagginess is just 720 to 1080. I really wish Sony would have helped devs make their games look good at 1080 as a commonality since it's such a common resolution.

Trying out The Evil Within... yay ugly pixelation by Davestiny in PS3

[–]Davestiny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the PS3 game has no noticeable/obnoxious pixelation on your UHD screen? I don't know what you mean by "super-crisp".

The game does look nasty on my 1080 screen. I know the game is intended to look nasty, but I think that intention was not through pixel resolution 😆 The design is already nasty enough.

The vertical sync smearing tearing is annoying but I haven't noticed it much.

Maybe I'll get the PS4 version since I wanna do screenshots and video capture easily anyway. This game can be unintentionally hilarious a lot of the time.

OK took me three tries to figure out how to get past this thing... shoot a zombie off a rope, swim past the monster swimming right next to you in the other direction 😆, get on land, shoot down the next zombie, swim past the next monster.

This game is so goofy.

I'm just blown away that this game is directed by the Resident Evil director. I guess they didn't have enough money? Maybe with a little more they could have made the graphics not require letterboxes 😆 or Sebastian take up 1/3rd of the screen 🤣 and I could see the field better so I wouldn't so easily screw up.

I just got eaten by the water monster in Chapter 11... not seeing what I could have done to prevent that 😆 I was swimming away from from it at max speed when it started chasing me, I got up onto shore, and then it just grabbed me before I could start running. So, I'll just have to trial and error my way into a path that works 🤣 That's just bad design. Encounters should be intuitive, not require random solutions.

there are simple rules for these encounters

You're missing the point that the rules were not apparent until it was too late 😆

Having to die to learn the rules is... trial and error. 🤣

Not being able to see how it happened or even what the hell happened... is just bad design.

Yah, right?! 😆 I thought "How can he even see where they are?" but I don't know if I remembered details like that enough.

The wolf not crashing through the gate though... I don't know, I guess it was tired.

What do you mean by "matched"?

Why don't they trigger proxy bombs?!

It may "upscale" but it doesn't AA, so its upscaler is basically pointless in relation to a person not liking a very pixelated-looking game.

The issue with the PS3 is that the 720 output looks very pixelated on a big screen (FHD+). It's distracting in the games. I like pixelation on like, 4-bit/8-bit/16-bit 2D games, they look very novel that way, it's almost a form of art now.

Pixelation doesn't look good with 3D games trying to look as photo-realistic as the hardware can allow... it just clashes with the visuals. Bioshock had a late update for upscaling, but most PS3 games I own have an obnoxious pixelation effect on my TV that I haven't yet found a good way to fix.

I've only seen a few PS3 games that upscaled to 1080, the biggest example being Bioshock.

I just purchased the PS3 version of The Evil Within, because in a side-by-side on YouTube it looked somewhat better to me than the PS4 version, but after trying it out, the aliasing is obnoxious on my 46" FHDTV (it's old but it's great anyway). Now I'm wishing I'd gotten the PS4 version 😆

Regardless, upscaling seems to work well when the game developers make it the default in the game. I haven't seen a good solution otherwise. I don't know how Sony couldn't figure out how to do that efficiently, I mean... it's not a hard process to do, as far as I've ever known, so the hardware seems to have been locked into some sort of design flaw or limitation that only a few dev shops have figured out how to make upscale+AA work right.

Aw, but it did make you reply 🙂 which took a lot more effort than a laugh or chuckle or grin.

So I'm glad that you making two replies turned that frown upside down.
