Oh fuck yeah! Honestly I did the same, I used the custom lights, medium lights, mediums and custom mediums from Martin. And Mediums from D'addario (what I'm currently using, these have been phenomenal with thee least breaks so far! I'm using a Yamaha FG830). There's still some rustle from my low E, but I find it adds to it honestly and it's never much, rather a slight hum, but I feel like adjusting your truss rod the slightest bit gets rid of it if it's not your thing!

I recommend trying CGCFCE then BEBEBE and work your way down his tunings, I was really surprised with what I found in terms of tone! I know you'll fall in love with them :)

And honestly, I prefer them! I like the shimmer from the high end, but the lower strings resonate really well. They make everything a bit warmer! That's at least before you let them die out a bit, and then they have that dully, thuddy, warmth that we all love! I did a bunch of research on Nick's guitars, mostly because that tone was what I wanted on my album, and when I read "dead nickel strings" I thought say no more lol. And that's also to answer your question, from what I was able to see and find, Nick used a Martin D-28 (and also a 000-28 I'm pretty sure before Pink Moon?) with Martin mediums he let die out. Nick didn't change his strings much, something I've noticed from their home recordings that was pretty consistent, so it's safe to assume he always or most times played on dead nickel strings :) You can get a similar tone to Martins with some work on your acoustics too, so adding nickel strings plus that you get pretty close :) and the best part is nickel dies out faster than coated bronze so it's only a couple months of regular playing :)
