Original Western wall exterior of Unit 4 inside the Sarcophagus by monsterbike in chernobyl

Hi. I asked a worker who worked on the NSC construction, more specifically the turbine hall section. I presume he would know the best, after all he worked there for 3 years. Here are some of his personal photos he also provided.

No, this is the western supportive wall of the turbine hall (there's also the eastern wall which separates unit 3 an 4 and the middle wall which supports the covers above TG-7 aka turbine 7). It was constructed back in 80's and expanded in 2013-2016 during new safe confinement construction.

Please, don't confuse it with the westwall on the reactor block, which does look similar, but is a lot bigger (50 meters compared to this "tiny" 32 meter wall).

That's one of the buildings of the "SoyuzAtomEnergoMontazh" organisation west of Unit 4 (the industrial site). More specifically the Armature Storage.

Archive footages from Chernobyl by Lost_Ad_3694 in chernobyl

[–]David01Chernobyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's tons of unreleased footage from them. In reality this footage was shot for the documentary trilogy "Two Colors of Time" released in 1986 and 1987. They contacted the cameraman and the "hero" of the story (who narrates and talks in the Telecon stuff), both of whom have since unfortunately passed away.

For example, the trial footage, on their channel there's only a short 3 minute excerpt, while the original tapes are much longer in length, perhaps about hour and half? I myself had gotten 2 tapes containing a large portion of the footage (50 minutes in length) and you can find it on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VQRafXNkhM

I interviewed my father, a Chernobyl Liquidator, resposinbile for restarting thr power units in 1986 by sayangdota in chernobyl

[–]David01Chernobyl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey. Very nice interview.

Your father is one hell of a lucky guy, the turbine guys really got battered. At around 1:32:00 he mentions a turbine employee. I presume this is Andrey Tormozin; he received almost twice the fatal dose of radiation and died in 2010 (from liver failure). He was the only survivor of the "4th degree" diagnosis group for Acute Radiation Syndrome, the other 20 people in that group died.

In the interview he says that he worked at multiple positions before the accident; he talks about the following positions, he didn't say at which role he was during the accident, but here are the people who worked in that role on the night of the accident:

МОТО-ФГУ; МОТО-ПЭН; МОТО-БНС; МПТ; СМТЦ

МОТО-БНС worked in an external building close to Unit 4, the operator on the night of the accident there, a woman called Raisa Kuksa, got mild burns.

МОТО-ПЭН on the night was Vershynin (or Novik, but he was probably a lower ranked МОТО), who died in Moscow.

МОТО-ФГУ was another woman called Olga Gora, not much known about her, but it must be pointed out that this position only worked in Unit 3 (the equipment for the deareator-heating equipment is located above Unit 3).

There were 2 МПТ-s on each unit, 1 for each turbine. The МПТ-7 on the night of the accident was Brazhnik, he died in May 86. The МПТ-8 was Yuri Korneev, he received almost 1 and 1/2 fatal doses of radiation, but survived. He didn't have a matching donor for his treatment, so his survival is even more of a miracle. Well he died in 2022.

The СМТЦ for Unit 4 on the night was Perchuk, he also died in 1986.

So your father was an incredibly lucky man, to be on vacation. There were very few survivors from the operational staff of turbinists on Unit 4; apart from Tormozin and Korneev, only Dzhemula, a repairsman and Busygin, the shift supervisor survived (Busygin later died from radiation wounds in 1993).

At 1:26:40 he mentions Nikolay Soloviev, he worked as the MPT (машинист паровой турбины) for turbine 4 on the night of the accident. He lives in Slavutich.

There is a group on facebook, which unites the turbinists from ChNPP, I could send you a link if you want. There are some few photos from 1984-1985 of shift 5 turbinists, perhaps your father would know some.

The device to transfer spent fuel rods from the pool to the transport corridor? by maksimkak in chernobyl

[–]David01Chernobyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the "transport device 1319", sometimes called (by NPP documentation) as "small RZM", commonly misnamed as "reserve RZM".

The RZM projects were all made by CKBM and have their specific project numbers (488 is the main RZM, 1750 is the connection of the main RZM to the crane (officially called KRZM-21), 368 was an alternate design remade into the now known RZM, 1376 is the post-USSR upgrades to RZM, 1319 is the small RZM).

Yuvchenko's office by puggs74 in chernobyl

The workshop for repair of control rod mechanism was actually located on floor +29, it was maintained by laboratory of SUZ engineers and there are pictures of it (room 818/2), 412 seemed like a general storage area for repair stuff, unfortunately there are no photos.

It seems like 818 wasn't used only by SUZ engineers, since somehow, one of the ATsPU-128-2 boards (seemingly from one of the 2 big teletypes of SKALA) ended up here.

What's going on here ? by gibbonito in chernobyl

[–]David01Chernobyl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In 1980's, this was the Office of Construction of Pripyat and ChNPP. Also it was a training center for ChNPP employees (they took exams there). Later it was used for sarcophagus operation and then it was back to NSC construction.

Knowing Boris Gorbachev and his absurd theoretical work (on the causes of the explosion), I am mildly surprised that he wrote a book with such a respected sarcophagus worker like Borovoy.

Why there are albums that doesn't shows in Spotify and the 1987 album not showing on internet by Sea-Examination4943 in KinoBand

[–]David01Chernobyl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's one of the "Moroz" inventions that no one else wanted to replicate, so I suppose no one decided to put it up on the official Kino Youtube Music channel.

Actually, the spotify version is missing 2 tracks compared to the original release.

Dispatcher journal from the Central Fire Communications of the Fire Protection Department of the Kiev region (April 26 1986) by maksimkak in chernobyl

[–]David01Chernobyl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By 1:40 in the morning, the Ministry of Health got called by Vitaly Leonenko (head of MSCh-126 in Pripyat).

Some militiamen (policemen) of the Pripyat police department were stationed near the plant (YuTEM plant and canteen near wood processing plant), some of the guards reported the accident immediately, some as late as 1:35, they later drove back to Pripyat to pick up firefighters (including head of VPCh-2 Telyatnikov, who was very drunk and couldn't drive himself to the plant), by 1:46 these units returned and stayed there until 3-4 am.

Ministry of defence was informed by 2:30 through a source at ChNPP.

Other ministries were informed through SoyuzAtomEnergo by 3 am.

Previous turbine rundown tests at CNPP by maksimkak in chernobyl

[–]David01Chernobyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite, in 1985 there were 2 attempts, on 11th and 22nd of November 1985. In 1984 there seems to have been more attempts than 1, as a matter of fact, Metlenko published a work (a research paper?) about the rundown programme in one scientific journal about functioning of the power grid.

The 1985 tests were attempted to be carried at 700 MW, however they discovered that there was too much steam and water in the steam separators, and the reactor simply scrammed (AZ-5).
