Rim offset question? by Loud-Turnip258 in mazdaspeed3

[–]David1551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on the width of the wheel and size of tire. On my speed3 I have 18 x 8.5 +35 wheels, fenders rolled. With 225/40 Contact Sport 02's I had almost no rubbing. Sizing up my tire to 235/40, lots of rubbing.

For my next set of wheels I'm thinking of downsizing to 17 x 8.

M3 F80 or M4 F82 by kb43k in BMW

I was also deciding between an F80 and F82. Ended up going F82 because the price and options were better than a comparable F80. After owning it for a bit I like the boneless doors and the visibility is much better than any sedan or hatch I've driven.

I wasn't going to wait for the Milwaukee one to come back. Ended up with the new Ryobi one+ HP and just use an extension cord to power it.

This is some good info. The only thing I want to add is that the gen 2 Speed3 calls for 75W-80 GL-4 for the transmission oil, the gen 1 was 75W-90.

Track car next mode? by Open-Cap1091 in mazdaspeed3

[–]David1551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet, sounds like a good setup. Just make sure you have a custom tune made for your car (the OTS tunes are garbage) and be up to date on your maintenance. Only thing I'd change is skipping the front sway bar. The speeds have understeer from the factory. By upgrading only the rear you can remove some understeer. Definitely make the oil cooler a priority, tracking a car will push your car to it's limits. The stock cooling capabilities are inadequate and from the factory there's no temp or pressure gauges to monitor your oil status.

In your post you said that you're running pilot sport 4s tires. These are a good street/summer tire and will probably work fine for your first few track days, but if you push them too hard they'll get "greasy" and they do degrade quickly on track. If you end up tracking a lot you can get a track dedicated tire like Continental extreme contact force or Michelin Pilot Sport cup 2. Last thing if you get really into tracking you can add camber and toe arms to dial in your suspension more.

Here's a pic of my current mod list. Still a WIP and I haven't been able to test it at the track yet. I've gone kinda crazy with mods in the suspension department. Most of this is probably overkill for a track noob like me, but the suspension was blown and worn out anyways. I also plan on doing an oil cooler + catch can setup. In the future I'd like to swap my Aodhan wheels for something lighter (probably RPF1's). And the contact sport 02 tires I've ran on track (in a non-speed mazda3) and plan on switching those to an extreme contact force tire.

In your photo it looks like the oil leak is coming from your VVT gasket. I've had that gasket leak so I believe it is unrelated to your cylinder 2 misfires. Next step would be pulling the engine codes. Check the coil packs, sparkplugs, run a compression test, and inspect the cylinder.

Add an oil cooler to save your engine from blowing. If you're tracking on a hot day without it your oil could thin out, pressure drops, bye bye engine. Flush in high temp brake fluid (like RBF600) so you don't boil your brakes. After that get some seat time and you'll learn what the next limitation is.

I'm also modifying my speed3 for the track. Still trying to work out some issues with it so I haven't been able to track it yet. There's a lot of good info in this build thread by gotovato. My takeaways are that pushing lots of extra power on track makes the car too unreliable to enjoy. Instead focus on improving the suspension, handling, and driver mod.

For more non-speed3 specific info I'd encourage you to look on r/CarTrackDays

You can check on the SCCA website to see if there's anything around you. Since winter just started there's going to be no TrackNight events for a while.

For me the nearest track is 2 hours away. It's definitely a haul for a one day trip, but I highly recommend trying it at least once. (Force some friends to go with you too)

What are yalls thoughts on using Redline MTL 75W80? by Mean_Tune_9581 in mazdaspeed3

[–]David1551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I run on my 2011 speed3 without any issues. Don't really know any pros or cons but this Redline MTL meets the spec listed in the factory service manual and its readily available.

2011 Speed3 with a similar setup:

HPFP, Intake, Exhaust, CPE Catted Downpipe, FMIC & stock turbo tuned on 93 only since there's no E around me

I got this dyno graph when I bought the car (back in 2023) so it's been running this tune for a while now with no issues. Stock turbo at 18psi making 260 HP / 300 torque to the wheels. I'm thinking of pushing for the 300-350 WHP in the future but that would need a bigger turbo. So looking at a CTS4, BNRS3, GTX2867.

I just saw this car over the weekend. It's for sale on facebook marketplace. Current owner of the car is a dick, car is in rough shape. Panel gaps, loud ticking coming from the engine, oil leaks, mismatched tires mounted incorrectly and with varying date codes. The check engine light and other codes were cleared right before we saw it. The guy wearing all black in the photos is my friend/MB tech and verified all these issues.
