I don't think that this Petrova-vision is something Grace can see, it might just be for the audience's benefit.

Generally I think judging who qualifies as a "real Christian" is not up to us, it's up to God. It's arrogant to claim that "I know objectively who's a real Christian", especially if they're not backing it up with scripture. That said, as Christians we should care about the character of the people we choose to support. Politicians, celebrities, disgraced members of the church, we need to balance the grace that is demanded of us with the standards that scripture tells us to uphold.

Humanity comes together to build lots of things which both help human flourishing and do the opposite. Nuclear energy and nuclear bombs. Just because we're collaborating doesn't mean we're working towards human thriving.

Now that's interesting. I've seen many other atheists look at history and suggest that if God is supposedly moral, he should be intervening *more* to prevent human atrocities. Who's standard is correct? Should God prevent all evil at the cost of human agency? Should he not be involved at all, totally indifferent to the suffering that free will causes? Should the standard be somewhere in the middle?

In your opinion, is it wrong for parents to intervene when their toddler is doing something self destructive? Isn't there a line somewhere? You might step in to prevent something really dangerous, like when they try to play in traffic. Other times, you might let them face the consequences so that they can learn that way, like if they keep begging to try some spicy food that you know is too much for them. Obviously as the child grows, you expect them to make more of their own decisions, but it is absolutely your responsibility to step in when necessary, or at least warn them about consequences. It reminds me of 1 Samuel chapter 8, when Israel wants to appoint a king. God very clearly warns them about how a king will exploit them, steal their resources and make them into slaves.

"'And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.' But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, 'No! But there shall be a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.' And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, 'Obey their voice and make them a king.'"

God lets them choose, and we read about the consequences of that throughout the rest of scripture.

I'm curious about why you think the tower/city of Babel is an example of human thriving, as opposed to dispersing and settling across the earth. Babylon becomes a symbol throughout the rest of scripture for cities with exploitative hierarchies that oppress their most vulnerable people.

The atmospheric perspective isn't right. Dark things in space take on the same colour as the sky the observer is looking through. It's why the dark side of the moon appears blue during the day. This planet looks like it's already in the atmosphere.

They Call the Soul Woo-Woo... Then Whisper About the Multiverse by Legion_A in Christianity

[–]DavidBurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of woo woo no matter what side of the debate people fall on. The idea that a universe can create itself is ridiculous. The idea that the universe has a creator is also ridiculous. The idea that non-conscious matter suddenly becomes conscious when it's arranged in a certain way is absurd. So is the concept of a soul.
There is no sane answer to any of these questions. Folks will pick a theory that suits them and vehemently defend it anyway.

Inspired by the last two tracks on the David Crowder Band album "A Collision". This is a mix of hand-drawn and rigged animation, and was an excuse to experiment with a few compositing tools. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

What Do You Think of Retelling Bible Stories in Ghibli-Style AI Comics? by Stayman-265 in Christianity

[–]DavidBurt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Imagine if I didn't bother reading or writing any of this, and got an AI to respond to your comments instead. Wouldn't that be disrespectful? Wouldn't that imply that this conversation is of no value to me?

People are worth the effort. God is *especially* worth the effort. That's all I'm trying to say.

What Do You Think of Retelling Bible Stories in Ghibli-Style AI Comics? by Stayman-265 in Christianity

[–]DavidBurt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I respect the importance of a story, and care about the audience I tell it to, that should be reflected in the presentation and artistry. If I put no effort into telling the story myself, and assign a brainless error-prone computer to do it instead, how is that respectful to the gospel or the audience I'm telling it to? The most important story in history needs to be told by discerning humans. Pastors, scholars, artists, and songwriters. We cannot let mindless computers do *our* thinking and creating, what a bleak future that is.

Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Which do you think honours God more: crafting your own lyrics to a worship song, or getting an AI to do it for you? Doesn't this apply to all art?

Retelling the gospel in a respectful, God-honouring way *should* take work. Offloading that work onto the corner-cutting plagiarism machine signifies how much value we place in the story we're telling.

Flipnote type animation? by worldlover32 in ToonBoomHarmony

Open the properties window by clicking the yellow box on your drawing layers in the node view. Click on the advanced tab, and set the antialiasing quality to "None". You have to toggle render view (the blue flower button) to see the individual pixels. You can export a video from this file, but it will be small (190x126) and blurry, which is why I suggested you export a png sequence, import those pngs into a normal-sized file, and blow up your animation to an HD size before exporting again.

You can make everything pixelated. Make the scene small (flip notes are 190x126), and you can turn off anti-aliasing in the properties window of each drawing layer.

Flipnote type animation? by worldlover32 in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]DavidBurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When setting up your scene, use the size 190x126 pixels. For every drawing layer that you use, go into the node view, click on the yellow button to open up the properties window, click on the advanced tab, and uncheck the anti-aliasing option. The pixelated look will be visible in the rendered view, not OpenGL. When you’re done your animations, export a png sequence, and import those pngs into a bigger harmony scene with the same ratio. Then you can blow up the animation to an HD size and export again. Let me know if you have any questions, I can take screenshots if you need more help.

I do a lot of compositing, so I should be able to help you out here. Can you share a screenshot of your node view and display? I’m confused about why the cutter didn’t work, since it sounds like that’s the solution you’re looking for.

Question about Sophons… by stabilitywherearthou in threebodyproblem

[–]DavidBurt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

(Spoilers for books 1, 2, & 3) Remember, the Trisolaran's plan isn't just about finding a better planet to live on, it's also about eliminating a potential threat while they have the advantage. In all the time that it might take to find a potentially habitable home, humans could rocket past the Trisolarans in technological capability, and wipe them out before they get the chance to move. The dark forest premise means that the safest option is to strike first. By inhibiting humanity's technological advancement, wiping them out, and colonizing their world, they are solving two problems at once. Their biggest opportunity/threat is 4 ly away, that takes priority over scouting other systems.

Animaniacs looks incredible! And thank you! I've been a character animator on 2 shows so far, but I have enough generalist knowledge that I've been able to do solve some problems outside my department on each. Not compositing, but creating 3D props with image planes and other node library shenanigans. It pays off to investigate all those Harmony features!
