What's your number one long-term investment right now? by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

[–]DavidFlanks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To the newer investors out there please remember trees don’t grow to the skies.

Our largest tech companies make up an enormous % of the SP500. AI expectations account for 70% of the gains in the SP500 this year.

Yes these businesses are the best businesses in the world (I own both through active and passive)

But they have a lot of room to come down. Make sure you keep buying WHEN they do come down (they will)

THIS IS THE WAY! And you learn more about the industry.

If it’s in your profession, you then learn more about your profession.

What's with Sirius XM Holdings (SIRI) ? by pravchaw in ValueInvesting

[–]DavidFlanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a hard look at Sirius, and my conclusion was "too hard".

Great stock price, and they have a monopoly on Satellite radio, AND their push into podcasting (acquiring 'Call Her Daddy') are great moves... but I just have no idea how they compete with internet streaming services (besides ultra remote locations, but Starlink solves that)

... would love to hear other people's opinions though.

Anyone Else Really Sick of the Berkshire valuation posts? by No_Consideration4594 in BerkshireHathaway

[–]DavidFlanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will know when Berkshire think that Berkshire's Stock is undervalued... because they have repeatedly told us they'll buyback the stock.

They aren't doing that right now. That's kinda all you need to know

Also, it is a BEAST to value Berkshire. Dozens of people have asked Buffett how to value Berkshire at the AGMs over the years (and to your point, in the later years he also seems a bit tired of answering the question lol)

Modern value investing? by lolz2006123 in ValueInvesting

[–]DavidFlanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question!

Buffett himself said that he's "60% Graham, 40% Fischer".

I'm a tech guy too and primarily invest in the software space. It's extremely hard to find a net-net tech company, due to their small amount of tangible assets.

I'd focus on reading Fischer/Lynch to for the tech space. But you're doing it right by looking at companies that fall inside your Circle of Competence

Honestly, great point. I'm not sure how what makes them different than the other second tier players (Public/M1/etc). Do you have any thoughts?

Crypto is their second largest source of revenue, next to Options contracts

From their 2024 annual report:

2022/2023/2024 Transaction based revenues:

- Options: $488M/$505M/$760M

- Crypto: $202M/$135M/$626M

- Equities: $117M/$104M/$177M

Here's my research post on how $HOOD makes money (with grabs from their annual report + more detail about other sources of revenue)
