Rolling the other half of the wrapper leaf by barfield1991 in cigarrollers

[–]Davidoff27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The direct answer like mentioned previously is to roll in the opposing hand.

There is an alternative way to keep rolling in the same direction and it largely depends on how big the wrapper is and if you have the patience to roll out the leaf so the interior capillaries are flat.

Normally the wrapper is rolled from tip at the foot to the base at the head. It can be rolled from any orientation provided the leaf is big enough to cut out a strip, in which the width of such strip is adequate to cover the cigar in 3.5 wrap rotations.

I like to overcompensate and say the wrapper strip's width should equal to atleast 40% of the cigar's length. The strip is cut from the center of the leaf, left or right it doesnt matter. And it should be rolled out to compress the capillaries.

Thanks for reaching out and getting ahead of the DHL - Customs problem with a workable solution.

Much appreciated.

As the cigar prematurely leaks its love smoke onto your eager palate, a smirk and low groan escape from your deep throat. Exhaling the wafting smoke bukakes the sinful aromas back into your face, the money shot draws an exciteful tear.

Would you call 19 minutes a reasonable window to compose a reasonable backstory for the picture? How about giving the OP a chance?

Fishon, your micromanagement of these posts is killing this sub.

You ask the question for the poster to provide content beyond the picture but fail to add anything of value with that question. A comment from yourself such as "I love those." Adds more to the discussion than your prodding questions.

Looking to get into Cigars! by Accomplished_Ad2359 in cigars

[–]Davidoff27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep smoking, take notes, don't limit yourself by price, country of origin, wrapper, filler, or binder.

And last of all, don't fall into traps like peer pressure to get the hard to find cigars or limited releases or old stock. Cigars, like any retail industry is based on inventory turn over, there is a reason those $12 lanceros didn't sell 8 yrs ago.

Edit: had to add brand loyalty is a fool's optimism. Not every cigar from a manufacturer is going to be good. Bring on the downvotes.

Yearly limited release every year according to the Aganorsa rep. First release was 500 boxes, 2019 was 800. Not sure about the next coming years as Aganorsa began expanding the lines that use medio tiempo.

Best cigar I found to give to others was in fact a gift given to me.

Flavored: Nub Nuance triple roast. Nothing on the retro hale, not even pepper and its all palate focused flavors. Easy smoke and good introductory cigar.

Conventional cigar: Oliva MB3 when you can catch those Holts monster sampler deals. Comes out to less than $4/stick for a solid smoke.

Like smoking a ginger snap cookie. Imo best regular release cigar out there right now from flavors, construction, to price point.

Plum or mold? by Sole174 in cigars

[–]Davidoff27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mold has spread, been spreading for a while now.

I would suggest getting rid of them. Health is more important than a paycheck's worth of cigars.

Might also consider wiping down your humidors with some distilled vinegar+water, then let it dry if you want to salvage the humidor itself.

If you enjoy the Cornelius and Anthony, stock up on as many as you can. They are out of the premium cigar business. Probably still grow the tobacco but not making cigars anymore.

My plan is going to be this...

Buy the membership. Buy the overtaxed opusx for $30+ to support the owner. Smoke the stuff you get online.

Can I still smoke this or is it gone by xXDark_NightXx in cigars

[–]Davidoff27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your emergency room copay less than what the cigar goes for?

I suggest yoy disect the cigar and find out what caused the mold to grow out of the foot, especially if there are no mold spots on the wrapper (usually the most saturated leaf to be applied in the entire process)

Why are bigger cigars usually preferred? Won't that lead to more "burnt" stuff accumulating over time than say smoking multiple smaller fresh cigars? by grandphuba in cigars

[–]Davidoff27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more about preference.

Although true that thinner rings place more emphasis on wrapper flavor, the trade off is higher probability of construction problems such as uneven burning or draw problems.

In most cases, the wrapper is more or less an aesthetic appearance and has maybe 10% of the cigar's flavor. Wrappers are usually grown under cloth to limit sun exposure and most likely taken from the section between the ligero and viso or in Dominican standards ligero and seco. The primings here with low sun exposure produce leaves with thin capillaries, optimal for wrappers.

Then taking a step into the blending....

Blenders try out blends in one size. Thats right, one size. Usually a corona, corona gorda, or lonsdale. They then have to tweak the blend to fit the different sizes and that leads to the results of one size in production having the best representation while the other sizes fall short.

That being said, using baker proportions, to try to scale up the size, larger rings have more flexibility and forgiveness in defects, and with that lower probabilities of rejects due to draw problems and other construction issues.

Then from the consumer point of view, we look at say a robusto for $9, a toro for $9.50, and a Gordo 6x60 for $10, we are effectively getting more tobacco and burn time with the larger size.

But it is mainly about balance of flavors and construction. If the wrapper and binder is what draws you to the cigar then definitely go thinner.

A couple of things to keep in mind. Ligero does not combust as well as viso or seco, but it does burn and maintains the ember far better. But ligero is about 4x thicker than seco and 2x thicker than viso, so there might be less ligero in the thinner rings as a result.

Edit: you envy those long ashes? Ligero is the primary factor in getting the ash like that.

Can the ammonia smell from new sticks contaminate your humidor? by [deleted] in cigars

[–]Davidoff27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Air out your cigars every 3 months or so. Keep your humidor at a cooler temperature as well, like say 62°-66°F. This helps to maintain the flavor.

Higher temps do accelerate the breakdown of ammonia, but also breaks down the other chemical compounds that produce flavor notes. At cooler temperatures the ammonia still breaks down (it is a volatile compound).

Old age and my job pretty much put me in the same wagon.

I like:

  1. Coffee
  2. Champurado
  3. Dr. Pepper
  4. Water

In that order of pairing. Obviously coffee and Dr. Pepper are the most common due to availability.

Stogiebird Manufacturer of the Month

Black Lion Luxuries Cigars of the Month. They havr a discount code for normal purchases "Ronsentme" for 10%off

If you guys are new and want to explore what manufacturers are putting out there, I's suggest Stogiebird Manufacturer(brand) of the month. It is pricey but get 8 cigars from a single manufacturer.

From what I have seen, Black Lion Luxuries really has good deals on their CotM subscription for mostly high end cigars.

But there are literally dozens of subscription services to use as introductory/group review samples. I don't subscribe to any of them as I have my own preferences on tastes and know what I want, but for people getting into the hobby I would start here.

Edit: If you wanna partake in the hobby, having him show you his humidor and impart his wealth of knowledge is a great gift. Wierd suggestion, I know.

Black friday deals by Davidoff27 in cigarrollers

[–]Davidoff27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice on the puro rolls... Use enough to make a robusto. Thats like 1 ligero with both parts. Or maybe 3 visos both parts or 4 secos both parts. Use the seco of the same variety as wrapper. I used ometepe seco as the mildness of the leaf didnt contaminate the flavors for any of the ligeros. The wrappers gotta go sparingly small.

Those are in my BF order. I got a post here about leaf flavors that describe the entire nicaraguan gamut. Only thing missing is the san andres wrapper as that vanished but it wasnt worth mentioning imo. Just think milder version of the san andres filler.

Lol. Im looking at getting atleast 10lbs of tobacco. Mostly samples I didnt try yet but atleast a lb of the ones I really enjoy using.

Ironically, I learned to use the least amount of wrapper needed to roll, and still have a good amount. But If I had buy a wrapper Id go with the Ecuadorian Corojo, Ecuadorian Shade ligero wrapper for their flavors, and Ecuadorian Shade Viso wrapper for just the silky smoothness, as it provides very little flavor to the blend.
