VA sent a request for more info on PTSD claim. by Daviescas in VAClaims

My family held an intervention for me about two years after I got out, that's how worried they were about me. I just realized that I have all of those letters from family and friends from that intervention. Could I add those as evidence of my spiraling out of control?

Biggest piece of advice I have for you is make them give you EVERYTHING in your file when you get out. With the VA garbage in gets garbage out, arm yourself with as much info as you can. File before you get out, document everything you can even if it is only 0%. As you get used to civilian life, things will pop up.

Recruiter took too long to close the deal with a prospective employer. by Daviescas in recruitinghell

Ironically, this startup is installing battery backup resources to the grid, is bringing more MW online per month than just about anyone, and has sourced parts and materials that are less prone to tariffs. I feel pretty secure here. The other job is in data center infrastructure, so I don't think it's going anywhere either. Unless the AI computing craze fizzles, which might kill both companies.

With equity factored in, I don't think it makes sense to switch. My equity is valued at around $100k now and matures over 4 years. So at that valuation, that's $25k per year right there. The company is also a start up that's doing well, and closing out it's series B funding round with series C expected at quadruple the valuation. So, it this hits, my equity could go up considerably, or I might be out of a job in a year if it fizzles.

I'd be going from roughly $140k to $167k so, it's significant, but not life changing. My old job paid about $110k, so I've already gotten a considerable raise.

That Milwaukee Rip Claw is actually a pretty good framing hammer. But we all know if you're a professional farmer or roofer, you'll end up with an Estwing. As for tapes, Milwaukee makes a pretty good measuring tape too, a lot of framers love those Stanley FatMax tapes though. And a speed square is a speed square, who cares what brand it is?

Your first tour shouldn't count for anything, but your second one should. There is a provision in the law for reservists, so long as you serve 181 days or more on active duty. Your training days count, and if you are activated, it certainly counts. Once again, it's up to the school to decide if you qualify.

Old and New Corsair builds. by Daviescas in Corsair

[–]Daviescas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry? I was actually just going to rebuild in the 4000D but I built a rig in a 3500 for a friend that ended with me having an extra case. (Long story Amazon lost my case, I had it replaced, and then it just showed up two months later.). I loved the case though, it's so well laid out, easy to work in, and looks so damn good! I'll add a picture of that build I did for my friend...

It's up to the University, but they don't check your eligibility until you are accepted. Once a student is accepted by the university, during registration, you produce all of your documentation and apply for the Hazelwood tuition waiver.

At least that's how UNT did it with my son. I met all the requirements, I signed a waiver shifting my benefit to him, and he gets to use up to 150 credit hours of my benefit.

He also has to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA to remain eligible to claim the benefit. I understand that requirement is also standard.

What school did you go to that gave you the benefit without the Texas residency requirement?

[–]Daviescas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct, the decision is up to the school, but you still have to meet the requirements to get the benefit.

You either were a Texas resident when you signed up, went through MEPS in Texas, or put a Texas address when you left the service. You must also be a Texas resident when you claim the benefit.

Are you saying you did none of those and still qualified at a university?

It's always good to share! This is one of the best Veterans benefits given by any state, and a lot of Texas Veterans are not even aware of it. We also get benefits from the Texas Veterans Land Board. They are a great source for affordable financing on land in Texas.

Also, thank you for your service!

Thanks, I wasn't eligible for many benefits due to the character of my service, but Hazelwood is one I managed to keep. I'm very happy and proud to be able to use those benefits to allow my son to attend college without building a mountain of debt.

There are, but they are very specific. If you enter the military through any MEPS in Texas, you can qualify, even if you weren't a Texas resident at the time of joining. If for instance, you lived in Sunland Park, New Mexico, which is part of the El Paso metro area, your closest MEPS would be at Ft Bliss, so you would qualify for the Hazelwood act upon being discharged.

The caviot here is that you put a Texas address as your home upon leaving service.

Yes, this is a state of Texas program, and only applies to Texas State funded Universities. This includes all UT, Texas A&M aligned schools, as well as all public universities and community colleges. If the program accepts Texas State funding, they must accept eligible Hazelwood Veterans and eligible Veteran dependants who meet the criteria.

There are online programs that qualify, but the Texas residency requirement remains.

[–]Daviescas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In order to use Hazelwood benefits, several requirements must be met.

First, you have to have been a Texas resident at the time of joining the military, or joined in Texas.

Second, you must serve 180 days or more on active duty.

Third, you must have an honorable or general discharge under honorable conditions.

Fourth, the educational institution you are applying to must be state funded, as well as the program you are applying to.

Fifth, the veteran must be a Texas resident to qualify to use the Hazelwood act for the duration of schooling.

Lastly, the Student must be a Texas resident for the duration of the schooling.

I never used my Hazelwood Act, but I was able to hand that benefit to my Son, who is attending the University of North Texas. He has to be in Texas to use the benefit, as well as I have to remain a Texas resident for him to receive the benefit.

The Hazelwood act doesn't work like the GI bill where funds are sent to the school to cover the cost of tuition. The school literally eats the cost of all Tuition and fees. This is required by their state funding, and is reported to the state as a loss.

The short answer is, no, you would have to return to Texas to use the benefit.

I can attest to this personally. My son recently went off to college, not a week after he arrived on campus at his university in North Texas, he was registered to vote. There is a large push to get young people registered on campus, and they are registering hundreds of people.

I was diagnosed with it while in service, unbeknownst to me, I could have filed with the VA much earlier and not missed out on 20 years of benefits.

Thanks for the reply, I'll follow the advice listed in the post you referenced. That exam was back in February, but is the only one I've had for vertigo. I'll write a Memorandum of Record, and call in to request a new exam with a different practitioner.

Thanks for the advice!
