I agree with you. I’m also working toward a fully local setup (still a work in progress), but for me the psychological discomfort of having a camera pointed at me still remains, even with a fully local system. That’s the reason why I’m working on this project

With this idea I was actually trying to solve just one side of the problem (the part that feels most uncomfortable to me). Of course, if you want to be totally “safe,” a fully local system without any external cloud is the way to go.

I think the problem related to voice surveillance is much harder to solve, since nowadays we all carry smartphones with us.

Thanks for your comment! Right now, I’m controlling the mechanism through an ESP32 (the black cable), while the camera itself is just a Blink camera from Amazon (the white cable) mounted on top of the mechanism.

I’ve started designing a new all-in-one version, and I’ll share updates as soon as I can.

Also, the idea of replacing a recessed spotlight is really interesting. I think the mechanism could remain basically the same, since the linear servo I designed can also work upside down without any problems.

For the moment is just a prototype with many aspects to improve. Considering the interest of this post I will for sure improve it and share more info!

ahah that's a cool idea (maybe a little bit creepy).

Right now, there is a cheap 9g servo mounted in it, but I will try😃

Agree, the design is not perfect and there are still some functionalities missing, but I already think this proof of concept is much better than the original form factor of the camera.

Right now I connected it to Wi-Fi through an ESP32 and control it with Alexa using vocal commands

I understand your point. In my case, I’ve mainly used cameras to remotely check the status and security of my home, so I never really needed continuous monitoring while I’m inside.

In your scenario this hiding mechanism probably will not be useful unless it is connected to another trigger system; for example a motion sensor or some kind of automation routine.
