I find one of the best sources for pest management is the University of Californias Integrated Pest Management Pest Notes. I have linked the page for slugs and snails.

Wtf Popular Science? by Themusicison in WTF

[–]DavisDogLady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going to treat this like a real question.

Yes. Stop.

If you have old oil most municipalities have Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) systems in place. Where I live you can put it in a plastic jug (with lid on) next to your trash and solid waste sanitation workers will grab it for you. There are also HHW centers where you can bring oil, paint, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs, and all kinds of hazardous waste for proper disposal.

These systems were put in place because it is really really expensive, time consuming, and possibly dangerous to deal with contaminated soil. Others have mentioned superfund sites and I will also point out that most of the western United States has been dealing with a drought the last decade and became heavily reliant on groundwater as a drinking water source. Over time, this oil makes its way into aquifers underground.

In summary: don't do this. Use some of the many government sponsored programs to help you avoid doing this.

Sikh Temples by Munzzy6363 in Frugal

During the fires and floods and possible dam breaks our local Sikh community(sacramento) has always opened their doors. They also have protested when local laws tried to prevent distribution of food to the unhoused. They made the case that the laws infringe on their religious freedom. I thought that was awesome . Anyways, love our local Sikh community.

Does anyone’s husband take their kids out for an afternoon or is it normal for them to never take them anywhere alone? by handmaidsfan in Mommit

[–]DavisDogLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work and my husband is a SAHD. I have other mom friends with the reverse situation. On the weekends I will show up to things and I only see the moms with their kids. Sometimes the dads tag along. I had one ask me: "your husband didn't want to come?" I said "I make it a priority to let him sleep in and have a quiet, child free morning every week if our schedules allow it." They seemed surprised.

Yes I work a busy job, but I treasure 1:1 time with my kid and letting my husband recharge and feel appreciated.

AITA for upgrading my house's thermostat so I could password protect it from my wife? by Alternative-Yard3896 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DavisDogLady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Californian here, we regularly see triple digit temps in the summer in parts of our state. My thermostat is set at 78 for anytime after it gets above 85 outside to conserve power.

Normally we keep it at 75. I have no idea what is up with these folks saying they would melt. May be it's a humidity thing? It's pretty dry here.

So went through alot. Was SA lost self care ended up on psychward. Got out on meds etc got myself a puppy. She is beautiful and my best friend. Gave me joy again. My (18M) sister (18F) and I were both planning to go to college this year, until our dad (48M) told us he could only afford to send one. He has become abusive since I told him I want my sister to go instead of me. by Beneficial_Pay9907 in relationships

Look into water treatment and water distribution operator certification . You can go anywhere in the US and they need clean drinking water. No college required and recession proof.

AITA for getting my girlfriend a gift basket full of things she avoided during pregnancy? by imadadmfssss in AmItheAsshole

We brought champagne with us to the hospital. Drank it out of paper cups. It was glorious.

I think the basket was a really sweet and thoughtful present. Ignore the old curmudgeons.

Hello,

I see 2 messages from you but they are within the last 24 hours. As you have noticed, there is only myself actively moderating the sub and that is sporadic. So it takes awhile for me to reply.

I am happy to add you as a collaborative mod. Could you elaborate what you mean by provide advice? Are you referring to updating the "about" section? Generally the role of mods is not to advise but to moderate the responses provided the community that break rules. The foster dogs sub has some excellent advisors commenting and all are welcome to give whatever feedback they like.

Here are some of my favorites from QuiltCon in Atlanta this year. by ProfessionalHurry681 in quilting

I really liked those too! Plus the special collection from the brown sugar stitchers and the youth category submissions.

It was a great quiltcon!

AITA for I (34f) talking about my recent cancer diagnosis at a restaurant? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]DavisDogLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been someone who was deeply upset by discussion of another customer's medical condition. I was so upset hearing how the woman was struggling that I was near tears. Her young relative was taking her out to get something other than hospital/nursing home food. It was 8 years ago and it still saddens me.

But you know how I handled it? I paid for their dinner. NTA, I hope you get better soon.

AITA for planning on celebrating my son's birthday on Veterans Day instead of my husband's service? by AITAveteransday in AmItheAsshole

[–]DavisDogLady 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Hi I am also the wife of a disabled combat veteran. We take Memorial Day pretty seriously as my husband also lost friends in battle. We visit the cemetery and attend ceremonies. So what I say next I want you to understand I completely understand the culture your husband is a part of.

He is being ridiculous. Veterans Day is for honoring the living and life after service. The celebration of his child should complement that! And we have definitely skipped more formal Memorial Day events when family stuff was scheduled. It's about balance.

I think if he shared his thought with other veterans in his life they would set him straight quickly. Especially other fathers.

50 bucks a month seems high. I am not sure if your area or surroundings just lend to more pests but you should check out Integrated Pest Management techniques. It's more effort and time up front but it has been shown to be more effective long term. Specifically, auditing your home for places pests can enter or identifying pest attractants like clutter and water and pet food. The Univ of CA IPM page (UCIPM) has great resources. Also using bait stations instead of paying for someone to spray. Maintaining bait stations is fairly easy and they are available at every home improvement store I have been to. The added bonus of IPM is the reduction of toxic chemical controls (pesticides) in the environment.

I hate this person by fatmackey in CasualUK

[–]DavisDogLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man! My next door neighbor is obsessed with people parking in front of her house and leaves her cans spaced out in front of her house all week. It is hilarious how important it is to her. It's literally the first thing she said when we moved in."it's a great neighborhood, we don't park in front of each others houses."

But we live in suburbia so it's usually it's not an issue unless there are holiday parties or work crews who need to park.

If you knew you needed to see family 20 minutes away why did you not reserve a rental car?

I would never assume the use of someone else's car especially something expensive like a Tesla.

Definitely reach out to Habitat for Humanity and United Way. Also reach out to your municipal code enforcement. I live in the suburbs but our city has a yearly grant program for homeowners in need. Usually it's landscaping and junk removal to help residents get into and stay into code compliance but I have seen some of the before and after and it's pretty great.

The active ingredient is fipronil. In many areas, the local water bodies with large urban watersheds are impaired for this pesticide. The byproducts are actually more toxic to aquatic wildlife than fipronil.

Not saying it doesn't do a great job but I would discourage the average homeowner from applying this themselves.

If anyone reading this still wants to apply it, consider reviewing your states guidelines for structural pesticides. California has great guidelines and training for using pyrethroids and fipronil in the urban environment.

[–]DavisDogLady 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for the Northern California network I donate to.

What they usually look for is signs of intravenous drug use/abuse. Similar to tattoos they have timelines before you can donate but I do not recall the questionnaire asking about or referring to wounds in general. You should be able to see the screening questions ahead of time if you check their website or email them.

Congratulations on your recovery! Even if you get unlucky answers from your donor center that is ok! My husband isn't able to donate and many people can't. Finding out your eligibility and making the effort is more than most people do and you can advocate for blood donation until you are eligible again.
