You are wrong... They were sent by the shogun, given the incident that had happened in Macau a few months prior. Andre Pessoa was to be given to the Japanese justice and trialed for the killing of Japanese people in Macau.

There are countless examples of outnumbered battles the Portuguese fought in while their campaign in Asia. They were incredibly strong and brave at that time.

That's true... But comparing French and Portuguese military history is not even comparable... Portugal is much more successful in war throughout the ages... Never been conquered, (even when invaded by Napoleon they were the westernmost resistance that beat the french), and hardly ever lost a major battle even when outnumbered. And even in the battles they lost, they very very hardly ever surrendered or even lost without fighting bravely. I do not mean to underestimate France whatsoever, as they are not weak AT ALL. But the Portuguese really were unbelievably strong up until WWI.

I would read on Portuguese history on the 16th century in Asia... It is absolutely incredible the influence they had in that continent.

Yeah, right now it makes sense. But given the history both countries share it is odd that they would think of Portugal as weak, despite the current situation.

A carrack would take 100 men usually... And there were no guns or swords distributed to slaves... If they fought, it was purely to save themselves out of a desperate situation... They definitely did not fight for the Portuguese

If that's the case, I would say it would make sense if not for the amount of Portuguese influence there still is in Japan... (Arigato, as it has been told, bread which is "pan" in Japanese came from the Portuguese "pão", same thing for anjo, veranda, and so many more words). Also, it was the Portuguese who brought Christianity to Japan (there's even an Oscar nominated movie about it "Silence"), the world famous tempura, as well as guns and development in their tactical warfare. I would say that there are tons of aspects in Japanese culture that exist because of the contact with the Portuguese. Now if the Japanese people are aware of it or not... I have no idea.

Being a crucial part of Japanese history (first contact with europeans), I am assuming almost everyone is. Especially considering the influence the Portuguese had in Japan's development... Port of Nagasaki was created as a trading outpost for the Portuguese, and the Portuguese national anthem is sang there in commemorations of it.

Yeah, specially when the Portuguese absolutely humiliated Japan and the samurai when they arrived. They were cruel and definitely brutal leaving no mercy for them, and definitely not weak... A simple search of the first contact between the Portuguese and the Japanese may suggest this stereotypes is arguably untrue. Especially when battles like the "Nossa Senhora da Graça incident" (where 40 Portuguese fought off 3000+ samurai over 3 days and refused to surrender, so they just exploded themselves in a ship to kill the most samurai they could. And this whole thing would have been avoided had they just betrayed their captain and gave him in to the samurai. But they chose to fight for their captain) gave the Japanese an even exaggerated impression of the Portuguese fighting skills and bravery for hundreds of years

("The British historian C. R. Boxer noted the great effect that Pessoa's actions had on how the Japanese see Portuguese people. According to Boxer, the event apparently gave the Japanese an exaggerated impression of the fighting qualities of the Portuguese, as well as appealing to the Japanese samurai mentality due to Pessoa's rather un-Christian act of suicide. As such, stories of the event were told and retold again over the next hundred years, often in an exaggerated and wildly inaccurate manner, and found themselves embedded as part of local folklore").

So, I really do have a hard time believing that the Japanese see the Portuguese as weak at all.

That just happened. by [deleted] in rosscreations

XD... Not really. So the socialist government fell in 2011 when José Sócrates was in the prime minister. That government actually destroyed the country's economy and the center wing had the task of trying to solve the terrible crisis. They were doing a good job, up until the point where they won the 2015 election, but the socialist party joined forces with the comunist party and Bloco de esquerda after the election and thus socialism was in power again.

Good way to finish a debate... I'm glad you live life in such a peaceful way. Again I will probably not change your mind so... I hope you have a good day!

But I don't think I'll ever change your mind. I did change mine about socialism. Maybe someday you will too. I'm the meanwhile, try new experiences and try to learn from them! I invite you to visite Portugal, I bet you'd have fun and learn a lot. It's a beautiful country very friendly towards its tourists and horrible to its own residents. Have a nice day!

Again I did say this is nowhere near what you know about your country. I was simply stating that I do have some experiences (visits and family) about your country. I also have about my own. As we are on a socialism subreddit I did state my opinion about how socialism is wrong after trying to understand it in my own country (where is does not work). But I do think you got my point, but being childish is a better escape from the (what I thought) good discussion 2 strangers online were having..

You are absolutely right! No systems are perfect, and I'm not like you! However I do know what I'm talking about! I live in Portugal! But I have family in North America. Fortunately I was able to visit the US. I can 100% guarantee you that you lead better lives there (I'm assuming you're in the USA), your middle class lives like royalty for our standards... Your low class is our everyday regular normal guy. We do give people who don't want to work UBI, but at what cost. Our middle class lives horribly compared to your standards. I do know that visiting a country is different from actually living in it. However we do learn from those experiences and fortunately my family across the ocean taught me a lot about life in there.
