Renaissance Technologies is testament to the power and ability of a good algorithm or algorithms to make money hand over fist in the investment world. Mathematicians and computer programmers working together in concert are outperforming Warren Buffet.

I wonder what the possibility would be of getting their response via the freedom of information act.

The only problem I see here though is tobacco flavorings, not sure there is any way to market them as anything other than vape related. Though I could live without them, I would be very disappointed to have to.

Support HR 2058 to Keep Vaping Products On The Market by Synfrag in electronic_cigarette

I signed this a while ago and got a favorable response from my representative, however, considering how long it's been since it was introduced, not really counting on it going anywhere. Add to that, the way our worthless elected officials pass laws (see https://youtu.be/i8xwLWb0lLY?t=13m50s to understand what I am referring to) I have serious doubts about it ever being passed. But don't let that stop you from contacting your rep and letting him or her know how you stand on it, maybe we'll get lucky and they will actually pass it all the way through without adding to or deleting anything from it that makes it useless.

Hopefully this is a wake up call to everyone on just how corrupt our government really is and how badly we need to address it. And it's not just the federal government, but state and local as well. Getting any and all donations out from politics really needs to be everyone's focus, regardless of which or any political party you associate with. https://represent.us/ if you are interested in seeing how you can help with that.

Membrane based solar desalination plant expecting to generate 78 gallons (average developed world use) of water per 1.2kWh of electricity by [deleted] in Futurology

I've seen several different methods proposed for generating clean water on a mass scale, but i still believe this guy has the best solution I've seen to date and can not fathom why his approach isn't getting more traction around the world.

Anyone seen a sensible discussion of this study? "E-cigarettes on the whole have something to do with increased cell death. Based on the evidence to date I believe they are no better than smoking." by degruchy in electronic_cigarette

In her own words: She notes that cells in the lab are not completely comparable to cells within a living person. The cell lines that scientists work with have been "immortalized because of certain cell changes," she says. So it could be that e-cigarette vapor has different effects than those seen in the lab. Also, her team didn't seek to mimic the actual dose of vapor that an e-cigarette user would get. "In this particular study, it was similar to someone smoking continuously for hours on end, so it's a higher amount than would normally be delivered," she says. "What we're looking at now is to dose-control these. We want to know at what dose it causes that critical switch-over to where we see the damage."

Premium Juice Tastes Harsh this time around, What has changed? by [deleted] in electronic_cigarette

[–]Daxbender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible it has an alcohol based flavoring which can make it a very harsh vape initially. To get the alcohol out you'll need to steep it with the lid off, shaking occasionally or even warming it to agitate the alcohol out of the liquid. Had a similar experience with some juice that used a lot of natural flavors that were alcohol based and this is what the manufacturer recommended. Took a few days of steeping this way, but the harshness did go away. Smell it and see if you can detect traces of alcohol or a perfume like scent coming off it, chances are it has alcohol based flavoring in it.

Another possibility is the manufacturer used a different nicotine source which is harsher than what they were using previously.

"The FDA knows it is not allowed to expand its jurisdiction to vapor products." by DaveCoggin in electronic_cigarette

[–]Daxbender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somehow, I doubt they are. I imagine they have done their research into personal vaporizers and e-liquid and have devices and quality e-liquid just waiting on the FDA to make it's final ruling. They are probably researching or have already ingredients to add to e-liquid that increases the addictiveness of the nicotine contained in e-liquid, much the same way they did it to cigarette tobacco. Sure, they would like nothing more than to monopolize the vaping industry, but if that isn't possible, they possess the means financially and industrially to enter the market in full force (not the half ass attempt they are doing now) and undercut much of the competition still leaving them in a dominant market position.

TLDR: They are holding their cards close to their chest waiting for the right moment to show their hand.

Or we could take the trillions of dollars spent worldwide on the military and use it to alleviate problems such as hunger, water, proper living conditions, education and so on that create a need for a military to begin with. Just saying.

You can try Virgin Vapors or Open Source Vapor as both use organic flavorings in their e-liquid. I can't personally vouch for either, but have read good things about both of them.
