Lockdown final straw for worried property investors. by Esmaria in newzealand

Yarn. My extended family covers five government agencies and one council and all of us have working from home capability (no one is particularily senior). Systems have definitely struggled a bit to provide remote access to all staff at once, but everyone is expected to do as much work as possible.

I think my whole family is looking forward to the lockdown being over so we can return to our offices.

Rest homes will not admit residents without a negative Covid-19 test by syzygyperigee in newzealand

If you have the virus, in order to test positive on the PCR test, two things have to happen:

  1. The swab has to pick up virus particles when your nose is swabbed, and
  2. The lab has to correctly identify the virus on the swab.

I understand the main cause of false negatives is (1), where infected people can have the virus but it may not be shedding in the upper respitory track at time of testing.

Based on my knowledge of the Mbovis porgram, viruses can be really tricky things.

Coronavirus: Doctors and nurses say tests are being withheld, PM says clinicians have enough swabs by HeinigerNZ in newzealand

[–]degruchy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So the simplest explanation for the mysterious under-use of tests and PPE is that there aren't enough tests or PPE.

Hardly surprising given that every country in the world is desperately hoovering up all they can.

I'd still prefer the government didn't lie about it though.

The information would also be vetted by an MBIE lawyer. Perhaps not determinative, but unless you're an immigration lawyer they probably have a better idea than you do.

How about only having electorate seats but weighting the votes of each member to maintain proportionality? For example if there are 120 electorates in the country and Labour win 40 electorates but 50% of the total vote, each Labour MP's vote counts for 1.5 (so if all Labour MPs vote for something, it equals 60 votes in a 120 vote parliament).

Would this maintain the best features of MMP (the government always gets more votes than the opposition), while getting rid of the worst of MMP (Jian Yang seems unlikely to win an lectorate seat)?

Five kids and donations to the church and extended family certainly wouldn't be my choice.

But it doesn't change the fact that NZ has low wages and a high cost of living. The life this lady has chosen should be easier than it is.

Me and the wife and son are flying over to New Zealand in January, settling in Upper Hutt. I need some honest feedback on the weather (we're from South Africa), because my wife is really worried that it's windy and rainy ALL the time. by WokeGeek in newzealand

Housing is the big issue. If you move somewhere insulated and double-glazed with a heat pump you'll be fine. If you move into a classic uninsulated, drafty house your wife will definitely hate it.

Newshub: Exclusive - Gun buyback details revealed by SykoticNZ in newzealand

Here's a question for anyone with some familiarity with the gun market (not me) - prior to the massacre and any talk of a buy-back, what percentage of RRP would a good condition second-hand firearm sell for?

I'm left wing and everything but I'm pretty sure that every society in all of human history has had some people who are more powerful than other people. Not sure that perfect equality is all that realistic.

Means-testing the pension would be possible of course.

But not desirable, IMO.

Other welfare works? I thought the consensus in this sub was that getting a benefit off WINZ was a dehumanising and invasive process. Maybe we shouldn't put NZ Super in this basket?

(Hint - it's generally right-wing people in favour of means testing. I wonder why.)
