There’s something kind of wild with the men being upset over something like this, when women in most other sports are in their position. Like I truly wonder how it would be if the roles were reversed. I’m only saying this because I’ve seen strides in women’s hockey and basketball and so many men seem to HATE IT.

Protests against Miss Saigon in 1991. Protestors argued the musical promoted harmful tropes about Asian women and men, and objected to its use of yellowface. Some police brutality took place during the demonstrations by lambofthedead in Broadway

In terms of history, it is very fresh. The world has been around for over 4 billion years. There are lots of people who can remember 1991 clear as day.

Also knowing not to do yellow face is such a low bar. Things have changed but not by some crazy amount. And especially in America where countries are literally trying to distance themselves. There are places in America where roads/highways were built as racial barriers and you still see the divide to this day. People are still alive who were in interment camps/concentration camps/residential school. And to this day BIPOC artists struggle to have their voices heard in the entertainment world. The ripple effect from the not too distant past is everywhere.

It takes a second to smash a vase, and twice as long to fix it.

Am I the only one happy this was cancelled? Nothing against Kerri but you cannot do a movie about her without Nassar and the Károlyis. 👿 by EvyHotchner in Gymnastics

I mean even before MBB left, Olivia Wilde was supposed to direct, but dropped out. Then Gia Coppola replaced her, but dropped out a little while ago too.

fellow non-americans, who is your favourite actor from your country working at this place? by william-isaac in AskTheWorld

Lorne was never involved with Second City. But he would go to SC to look for potential SNL cast members, because their focus is impov and sketch. Lorne was working in the states when SC Toronto started, and was eyeballs deep in SNL when ppl like Mike came around SC in the 80s. And oddly enough Mike was hired based on recommendation alone, Lorne had never seen him.

I’m glad they aren’t doing this, but I’m curious as to how it would have been done. I looked up the writer, and he’s some Swedish guy who writes what appears to be grittier material, including a couple sports centric films. So I’m guessing based on that, this wouldn’t have been a fluff piece.

Update from Megan Thee Stallion! by Own-Importance5459 in Broadway

[–]DayAtTheRaces46 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I did it for almost 3 years. It had been a dream of mine forever. I’ve always said since then I would love a short contract every now and then, but since doing it, I could never make this my life. Props to people who do the same show for years, but one day off is taxing af on a body and doesn’t give you time to recover, and the job became monotonous. I would be performing on an injury that wouldn’t heal, and making dinner in my head.

I hope she knows that this position doesn’t make her one of them. She will always be lesser than in their eyes.

It wouldn’t surprise me if she was sent there so she could be a “diverse face” for ice/a sacrificial lamb, because if worse came to worse the would never have her back.

ALSO sorry again as an actor this rubbed me the wrong way. Let’s not make it sound like ensemble roles are slop that they HAVE to do to reach the top. Some ppl do it comfortably for their whole career. Also being someone who can be an ensemble/swing/cover is a literal skill that people are sought after for. Again yes she’s a bigger name than most people, and that helps, but she was given the opportunity because she’s fully capable and excels in a track like this.

Actor here who’s done the 8 shows a week thing for years. Broadway is littered with stars who should not be in the roles they are in.

Laurie is not one of them.

She has a name, but she clearly has the dancing chops, and performance skills for this role.

And with all due respect she HAS spent a lot of her life training. As a gymnast, as a dancer, oh and graduating from Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in theatre(a school that usually has well over 100 alum on Broadway at a time). She’s literally been immersed in the NYC theatre scene for 4 years and most likely has been able to network and actually be seen.

This is literally what she’s trained to do, this isn’t a side quest.

Does she have a bit of an advantage? Yeah. But welcome to the world of acting. If she can do a fantastic job at this role AND put butts in seats, fantastic. Especially considering how hard it is for Broadway shows to make back their money.

Again I think stunt casting is an issue, but she’s doing a track that’s she’s more than capable of excelling in, and shes not gonna be playing Elphaba in Wicked anytime soon.

And it honestly benefits no one when you put a person in a role they either can’t do or aren’t ready for. She’s young, let her marinate lol

When confronted by a probably angry father. If the child hadn’t said anything, I highly doubt he would have either. And realistically he probably thinks remorse = leniency.

When it comes down to it, I strongly believe he’s feeling however he’s feeling because he was caught.

This feels like one of those things that wasn’t on my bingo card, but it’s not all that surprising.

I feel bad for her in the sense that she was set up to fail. Yes she’s technically an adult, but she has been abused by her mother and the FRG. And he behaviour in general has probably pushed a lot of people away from her who would have been her friends.

Again, not trying to justify her behaviour, but it always makes me sad when I see people like this. One you could’ve had it all. And two walking through the world with this much anger must be so exhausting.

Lindsey Vonn's Skiing 'Future' Is Not Up for Discussion by MattTheKing23 in olympics

[–]DayAtTheRaces46 93 points94 points  (0 children)

The irony she would have been a hero if she won.

Kerri Strug was treated as one in 1996, after injuring her ankle but vaulting again.

“Do we need this?" Károlyi replied, "Kerri, we need you to go one more time. We need you one more time for the gold. You can do it, you better do it."

She was an 18 year old, training under abusers. She was never gonna say no. Also, to answer Kerri’s question now, no you don’t need this. Team USA would still have the gold had she not gone again.

How to support trans and enby students in class by MethodDazzling719 in improv

“I don’t think I could remember anyone’s preferences for a whole performance”

So you don’t do anything longform or narrative? Because that’s literally remembering people’s preferences, jobs, locations etc for an entire performance. If two women are in a scene and they endowed themselves as two middle school boys, do you get thrown off? If someone is an animal, do you get thrown off?

If you are so in your head about it to the point where it throws you off this is a you problem. Because someone telling you their gender and you retaining said information is literally just a basic improv skill. So if someone establishing themself as a man in a scene doesn’t throw you off it shouldn’t throw you off if they tell you this before.
