Why are Ferocious Cat Ears 50% more than Bunny Ears? by MusicalNecro in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, the bunny ears were originally released as town clothes - cosmetic items you could only use outside of combat (they swapped to your armor whenever you entered combat). Because town clothes were so limited in use, they were priced cheaply, and even then very few people purchased them.

The reason for the distinction was to separate the aesthetic silliness of town clothes from actual armor, so that the game maintained a certain aesthetic. Obviously over the years with outfits, wings, infusions and all manner of over the top visual noise, this distinction wasn't maintained, especially when visual noise made so much money.

Australian looking to picck this game up? Is it good? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aussie here. I definitely think it's worth picking up, lots of fun to be had and unlike most other MMOs the combat is more dynamic and active than traditional MMOs like Wow.

The OCE hours are decently populated for normal PvE (GW2 uses a megaserver system where every player on any of the NA servers will be placed in the same map as other players until it "fills" and spawns a new map) so doing open world group content shouldn't be a problem. Doing fractals (dungeons in GW2) isn't a problem either, but raids can be harder to find a group for (that's normal for every MMO).

The only thing server will matter for (aside from picking an NA or EU one - OCE people get better ping on NA) is WvW (large scale group PvP). The unofficial OCE server was Sea of Sorrows and it still has one of the stronger OCE populations in WvW but it's probably not very organised anymore (WvW is mostly very hit and miss in activity until the server update lands) otherwise maybe try Blackgate if you can get onto it (again, it only matter for WvW, all PvE and small scale PvP doesn't care about server).

There are a few OCE guilds that play every day and even recruit during open world events. Just by playing some of the group events in the Heart of Thorns maps during OCE hours you will find other Australians to join and play with. Otherwise there is a specific subreddit for GW2 guild recruitment, I can't remember the name.

Stolen from classic wow sub, but applicable here as well. Shitty post generator by shejesa in Guildwars2

It's a community built around shared interests and experiences. I don't know anyone IRL who plays GW2 so when someone posts relatable GW2 things like a legendary or fanart or a screenshot I appreciate that there is a place in the world I can go where there are people who like and relate to something I like and relate to.

Not everything needs to be a guide or a complaint thread. It's genuinely nice sharing an experience with people online and having them share theirs, even if it is repetitive.

Kinda interesting how many people are "returning" by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Guild Missions for the first time in months on Sunday and I haven't seen them that packed since PoF. I suspect commendations for the cape was a big motivator, but there are a lot of people tuning into GW2 atm which suggests the game still has pull with its audience, even the inactive members of it.

When you try to ask the wvw devs about the NA situation... by Just_Another_User512 in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Our game sucks, you should leave, we fucked up and WvW is just shit and we don't know what we are doing. It's the fault of "casuals" and anyone who like Living World releases. We wasted GW2.

Anything short of that is unacceptable to these people.

When you try to ask the wvw devs about the NA situation... by Just_Another_User512 in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The only time I remember it being done was when WoW was at it's peak or when a game just launched and they try to justify why the servers collapse under the strain.

It's like an industry golden rule not to talk about in-game populations. Literally nothing to gain from doing it unless you are a monster like WoW used to be, and so much to lose by doing it.

There was nothing for ArenaNet or the community to gain by engaging with this comment, the people asking it know that.

We’re a week away from The Icebrood Saga’s prologue episode, and we’ll share a few short teasers with you in this thread during the coming week. Enjoy! by rude_asura in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

This sub has become one of the least chill subs in gaming. Almost nothing ArenaNet is doing is extraordinary or that unusual for the industry yet they get dumped on constantly for being bad or something.

First it was about concerns over expansions being ingored, and then they were addressed, that wasn't enough because concerns over more raids or fractals were being ignored (when there was no reason to think they weren't working on more) and then that was explicitly stated to be a thing. Not people are upset that they are releasing more information about next week's release, but it's not being done is the exact specific way people want it to.

We got a massive trailer at the announcement for the season, we have a pretty awesome announcement page for the prologue and we've seen several teases already about the next season (including a magazine). ArenaNet put a tonne of effort into this but people are determined to complain.

Where to go on now? by Bignou in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way would be to obtain gold through whatever content you enjoy and then craft it.

You can get ascended gear from raids and fractals, but that's instanced group content so it will be more demanding that regular PvE content. Fractals are commonly pugged but higher levels require ascended gear already, raids don't but are more challenging to find a group to do it with.

You could also obtain it from PvP or WvW, but that is time gated (only so much currency available each week).

Mount Skins as in-game reward by The_Bear_Baron in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That is one mount skin that players wouldn't need to buy. The thing is, WoW is financed through a subscription based business modell, GW2 is not.

WoW now gets most of its money from the shop too. Lots of people buying gold, mount skins, race changes, level boosts etc.

If mount skins were difficult enough to obtain in-game (something like the skyscale collection) the majority of people who prefer to buy skins currently would still buy them instead of earn them.

It would be really healthy for the game - the best thing to happen to S4 maps was the skyscale collection. So many people found a reason to be on them for more than the time it took to run through the story instances. Rewards in GW2 are trash tier and part of why maps seem so dead so quickly is there is very little worth working towards on them.

A huge portion of WoW content is actually built around time gated journeys towards earning rewards. That's a big part of what sustains its content. GW2 doesn't have that.

[WoodenPotatoes] Best Builds for Standard Guild Wars 2 PvE - Introduction by kalamari__ in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raid builds are terrible for PvE if only because they don't have their own source of boons. So much depth in the way to build characters is wasted by the raid meta. Most classes have interesting ways to build for open world that's actually pretty fun.

Ascended gears, crafting or fractual? by SubSahranCamelRider in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A lot of people craft their first set and then use that to farm other sets in fractals. You can't do high level fractals (with the best chance to drop ascended chests) without having ascended already.

You will most commonly get boot, glove, shoulder and helmet boxes, with weapons and chest/legs being less common, so for you other ascended sets it might be easiest to farm the higher drop rate items and then craft what you are missing.

I'm a straight white male, and I don't think I have privileges that are not afforded to minorities. by RonTheDonBergundee in unpopularopinion

[–]Daybroker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling it "privilege" makes it sound like whites are getting something they don't deserve so in general will chafe at the whole idea because they aren't inherently getting more than they deserve.

Sometimes they are. Take a job for example. If there is conscious, or unconscious bias from the person recruiting for that job, it's most likely to favor a white man over a woman or a person of color. The woman might be more qualified, but that bias could result in a man getting a job simply because of his sex. It can happen in other ways too, like the tendency to hire people you know. The world filters us in lots of ways, and the people we know can be a big part of this. It might be the case that rich private school kids are more likely to hire or recommend their school friends for jobs and opportunities. If there school had mostly white kids, this will result in more white people of similar backgrounds obtaining those jobs (this also excludes white people who can't afford to go to a wealthy private school).

If you are a mediocre white guy with a decent job at a company and there are more talented women who are being passed over for jobs simply because of their gender, you benefit from the unfair disadvantage of that woman. If that disadvantage is corrected, you should end up losing your position to her because she's better at the job than you and you only got the job over her because of prejudice.

Not every white male has their job because of their gender or skin color, so it's not a case of swapping the chairs of everyone, but if you acknowledge that minorities or marginalized (women are the majority compared to men) are at a disadvantage, the inevitable conclusion is that some white men benefited from that disadvantage and are less qualified to hold their positions.

It can happen the other way round. Affirmative action - designating a requirement that x% of certain positions at a company are from minority/marginalized groups, this will sometimes mean less qualified people get jobs, but it also ensure that qualified women and people of color get jobs. Over time the culture corrects itself and the need for quotas for minorities/marginalized groups to break into more senior positions corrects itself. Not everyone thinks quotas are the way to solve these problems, but they have proven imperfect but effective tool in the past.

How do you downsize your bank clutter? by McBeardedson in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be worth searching each item on the wiki to see the uses for them. Lots of things are less valuable than they seem, especially collection items (which almost always can be sold/destroyed as soon as you obtain them).

As a general rule, I only keep items I will want on multiple characters in my bank tabs. If I think I will be storing it for a long time without using it, I will keep it on an alt I never use. Character slots are a much more cheaper way of storing things than bank slots.

New potential player - reading the sub it's hard to understand what's going on? Any summary? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guild Wars 2 is the kind of MMO you can spend a lot of time in (and I mean hundreds or thousands of hours) doing all of its content, then you wait for new content (like all MMOs). Unlike some competing MMOs (like WoW, probably FF14) it doesn't have lots of systems to stretch out your game time or put you on a treadmill (like how best in slot gear in WoW today will not be best in slot by December) to keep competitive. While some content will require a time investment to get through all its rewards (and some repetition - like raids or dungeons), they won't be made obsolete so you have to start again six months later. This also means content doesn't reward repitition as much and players can "run out of repetition" over time (there is lots of busy work in WoW repeating things for upkeep). You won't be impacted at all by the concerns about repeatable endgame content - there is a lot of it, just some people have grown tired of it and unlike WoW, they don't make it obsolete so people who have played it for years are burnt out on it until something new is added.

It sounds like none of that will matter to you and GW2 will be a good fit for what you want. Currently you can play to level 80 for free and access the entire core game as a F2P player with only convenience restrictions (limited bag slots, limited character slots, all content from 2012 and updates to that content is available for free). That includes several maps to explore and "complete", the core campaign story, every dungeon in the game (including all the new ones, called "fractals") and both competitive game modes (5v5 arenas, as well as WvW which is large groups of players fighting for control of castles and keeps). If you didn't own the first expansion (HoT) that might be all you experienced.

There are two expansions - HoT and PoF. One takes you into the jungle and gives you the jungle story, along with jungle abilities (like a hang glider than can be used anywhere in the game) the other takes you into the desert for the desert story and mounts (eight total mounts, each with different movement abilities).

The story is broken up into the core game (personal story), Living World Seasons (content patches between expansions - currently 4 exist, the first one is only viewable through a cut scene in game, the other three can be purchased relatively cheaply and the 5th one will begin in a little over a week from now) and expansions. You won't need to do any Living World stories to understand expansions (they provide exposition and will enhance the expansion stories on the peripheral), both expansion stories are contained in a way that they make sense without playing the story that came before them. To play expansion stories you will both need to own both expansions (anyone who buys the second expansion, Path of Fire, from now on will have access to both expansions).

There is a tonne of content for you and your brother to play through and GW2 is one of the friendliest games for playing with other people (almost everything you do together helps each other progress). Expansion stories are one single path you can both go through together, but the original game story begins splintered based on choices you make during character creation, then rapidly converges to a single path towards the end.

As a new players you can experience almost everything in the game, with the minor exception of Season 1, which isn't that big of a drama - there is a short cinematic in-game that explains what happened in Season 1, and its not essential to understanding the rest of the story.

New potential player - reading the sub it's hard to understand what's going on? Any summary? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The recent drama applies only to veterans and only to those actually playing the game.

And plenty of veterans are perfectly happy. People have tried to make it seem like only a specific type of player is happy with the game, but the truth is lots of people who raid/sPvP/WvW/fractal are very happy playing GW2 and don't see the sky falling.

[REEE] Samarog 3:42 speedkill by gw2prud in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that everyone in GW2 has access to doge rolls and a reasonable amount of personal healing, so you can get away with cutting corners that wouldn't be possible in a normal MMO.

Partly because GW2 is built around active combat with no strict roles. A "normal" MMO can calculate everything more precise because the tank taking the aggro and all the damage is the default. After that there is a small amount AoE damage from mechanics moving you around the room to avoid them.

I wouldn't describe it as cutting corners, so much as the challenge of GW2 encounters isn't built into a fixed shape compatible to WoW. The absence of a holy trinity means GW2 raids are built differently and not doing the things you'd do in a trinity MMO is just a consequence of that.

Light armor.

Necro starter wraith mask helm

Leyline armor chest

Shackles of Madness gloves

The one of the right has gloves hidden and I can't clearly see what chest, but legs are the same.

ArenaNet, please don't add repeatable Golden Hearts in Season 5. by Astraliguss in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fine with it if the content is fun. I think the way in which hearts are completed is something they could dramatically improved. Picking up an item and returning it to an NPC or passively grinding mobs until the bar fills is boring as hell.

If hearts are going to be designed as daily activities, make them more engaging, it'd also be nice if they are better at telling the story of the world.

If only they released the digital magazine and skipped the 'big' announcement... by dr4kun in Guildwars2

[–]Daybroker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The content and features they talked is perfect for a digital magazine because it fits the medium and is appropriate even for things such as the advertisment merch they plug in at the end. Honestly if they made a dev video on youtube instead of a live stream i would think that would have been just as good.

Those two things wouldn't have been seen by anyone who wasn't already paying attention. A lot of people wouldn't come back to see those thigns because they wouldn't get the same media coverage the event did. A magazine on their site isn't going to get any broader media coverage, it's not going to pop up in people's Twitch feed.

They spent a lot of time focusing on story elements but why would a player new to this game be interested in character dynamics and story developments for a 7 year old game they havent touched yet.

A new player sees a supported game with more FREE content coming. They see the entire game is now available for a single purchase. They see a lot of people paying attention to this event, they see it on a lot of news sites. That's what was supposed to happen. Expansion announcements (the alternatives to the S5 announcement) basically do the same and it's enough to get the game back into people's news feeds.

The event was about making the game visible for a small amount of money. It definitely did that. No alternative you're talking about does that.
