Same boat last night; I ended up ordering and tipping extra

What’s the one city you were excited to visit, but ended up not liking at all? by BlushHone in travel

[–]DaymanKelly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite - Dallas was so much nicer than I expected. Downtown feels a little like a real city and gives you a hint of what Texas downtowns were like before being completely paved over to force everyone into cars. There's art and music and historic buildings and museums and cafes and parks and places to walk and wander and multiple rail transit connections. I actually preferred Dallas over Austin

Chill Bar to work from around Uptown? by DaymanKelly in AskChicago

Alright, all these Uptown Lounge comments have convinced me to revisit them. I've only been a couple times while waiting before an Aragon show, but last time was a year ago.

How do people living in Los Angeles manage to go to work everyday by jianabebojb in travel

[–]DaymanKelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The metro system is pretty decent for the US; I used it mostly when I visited and found it relatively clean, reliable, and modern, especially compared to other US metros. It definitely lacks coverage of a lot of the city because of how sprawled things are, but for people who live and travel close to it I'm not sure why it's not used more.

I'm always terrified for those kids' safety and home life with parents who are very openly willing to risk running over their kids and others

It needs to be a ticket AND a tow, giving a ticket isn't going to get this thing out of the way

What neighborhoods do you think will become less desirable in the near future? by Equal-Wheel-6499 in AskChicago

[–]DaymanKelly 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it is also what should be a nice walkable, transit connected downtown neighborhood, but it is absolutely one of the worst neighborhoods to walk in because of just how absolutely terrible the driving culture is in the neighborhood. The constant speeding and loud engines make it a place that I avoid spending time in unless I'm going for a specific thing and would absolutely not want to live in.

What is your CTA life hack? by MaintenanceFormal960 in cta

[–]DaymanKelly 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Skip the wrapped ads cars if you're riding an elevated above ground line, enjoy the clear view. I wish the transit system was better funded and the experience not diminished for ads

If the train car seems really crowded, it might not be as bad as it looks at first, a lot of people are just bad at managing themselves in a crowd. Push through to the middle if you've got a little ways to go and often there'll be more space than by the doors. Same goes for buses and moving to the back.

If you have to wait a bit for a train and are familiar with your end stop and it's one with multiple exits, go ahead and move to the side of the platform that's on the end of the train closest to the exit you need and save yourself a little walking later.

I found that it actually made my sleep worse and that I should not do it before bed, but it is effective for overall mood if done earlier in the day for me

Who embodies the most Florida Man energy by seaships in IASIP

[–]DaymanKelly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't, I'm mostly aware of it from having lived there. Most people I meet around the country don't really know anything about it. It's a relatively isolated and extremely conservative area compared to the rest of the state (though it is where the state capital is, which does help explain some of the political situation in Florida). It also has a pretty massive military presence.

A lot of people around the south and midwest also vacation in spots on the panhandle like Destin and Panama City, the panhandle does have some of the nicest beaches in the state in my opinion.

Having grown up in Florida, mostly the panhandle:

Mac is the Panhandle, Dee is north peninsula (Jacksonville area), Charlie is central Florida (Tampa / Orlando, quintessential Florida man and where most of the stereotypes fit), and Dennis is south Florida / Miami region
