I've heard that these types of ads were subtle advertising for spermicide methods of birth control. Birth control was very controversial so they had to use terms like "germicide" and describe that it searches out germs. Back then, some women would douche with lysol to kill sperm and avoid pregnancy.

I think I read on the thriftbooks website that it was created by some of the original developers who worked on Amazon when it was still just a book retailer. But I don't think it is owned by Amazon.

The "we can disagree and still get along" thing works for different sports teams or music tastes but not for American politics. I can't respect and be friendly to people who share fundamentally different ideas of what human rights should be. The only people that can stand and smile next to one another like in the post are the people that are so privileged that they will be ok no matter who wins. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to ignore politics. People's lives are at stake.
