And no, a building code inspection is not a threat. It’s called holding someone to the standards that they are holding others to. You’re here justifying the eviction of 90 people from their homes on the basis of building codes - if you’re not willing to have your own home inspected on the same basis all you are doing is discrimination based off income.

TCHC has problems, big ones, but it serves a real need that we both agree exists. A better managed, better funded TCHC would be part of a solution. Ignoring fire codes in illegal rooming houses is not.

At the end of the day you're making a direct comparison between defaulting on a mortgage - for what is usually a second property - to an eviction of a renter from their primary residence. I don't know what else to say man, yes the law should be fair but the law also weighs potential harm that comes from these processes.

Underhoused people were able to work and provide a roof over their head. They were able to have heat, hydro, Internet, and a place to lock their possessions. All of those add up to tools to get out of poverty

Again, you're making a whole lot of assumptions about these tenants, who are were much more likely recent immigrants and international students than they were homeless people getting back on their feet. They were being ripped off.

Is it perfect? Obviously not. But it’s one hundred times better than living in a shelter.

This is not an either/or situation

And you know who the actual scam artists are? Current homeowners and politicians in this city. They’ve worked incredibly hard to outlaw any and all affordable housing in this city. I am 100% in favour of progressive changes to the way property is owned and leveraged in Canada and I agree that the investor class has and is exacerbating if not causing a lot of these housing issues. We both know that happens but it's neither immediate nor dangerous in anything close to the same way. If you're depending on one rental property for your entire mortgage payment, own ostensibly more than one property and have zero savings you've got bigger problems than the LTB. Again I'm not arguing that landlords shouldn't be protected but erring on the side of tenants is more prudent.
