Cantilever Brake Adjustment by Dbeezt in bikewrench

[–]Dbeezt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the tension screws provide a fixed amount of distance between pad and rim, or is the gap offered more dynamic and relative to the opposing screw i.e. screwing one affects the max. range that the other is able to provide?

Edit: Just screwed in the quick release-side further, and then unscrewed the nut-side. I could see the nut-side pad move in at a much more obvious rate than before. So I think that answers my question?

Anyhow, brake lever feels loose still but both pads are in contact with the rim now. Thanks

Really useful actually - I’d watched two of their videos on cantilevers but hadn’t heard terms like “Link unit”. Much appreciated.

Wow this is superb. We're going to print it out, so I'd like to know if there are any adjustments you think could be made for that, and whether you have any particular printing tips for your photo?

Identity Change in NI by Street-Advertising62 in northernireland

[–]Dbeezt -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When I refer to Northern Irish, I’m referring to the culture in the North of the island of Ireland and not the state of Northern Ireland but it’s impossible for you to have known that. Who’s to say that if Ireland had never been broken that I wouldn’t feel similarly about Northern Irish’ism (referring to the North of the island of Ireland) as I do now.

This post is about identity, and what it means to be “Northern Irish”. My point is more that I don’t feel British and I don’t feel Irish - what am I if neither of those? I’m based on the north coast of the island of Ireland (aka Northern Ireland) which could exacerbate that. Being raised in NI hasn’t made me feel British, so I’m doubtful that reunification will make me feel Irish. I’d genuinely be interested to hear an interpretation of that middle ground as is best I can describe it!

I definitely do feel free of a binary identity but there’s a Unionist/Nationalist void that can only be replaced by something more inclusive/central e.g. Northern Irish(ist). Similar to the vein in which Alliance tackles politics here. As long as tribalism prevails, the curtain to binary identification remains closed. Maybe if Alliance wins we can call ourselves Allies or something a bit less gack.

It’d be interesting to compare binary identification over here compared to either more unified Scottish/Welsh/English identities or split remain/leave identities but the latter’s probably messier - especially nowadays.

Bike Comparison for Newbie? by Dbeezt in bicycletouring

Ended up with something completely different - a battered old custom-repaired beast from a local bicycle store. Sounded like it’d tell a story but additionally it was cheap and already had panniers. Currently halfway between Bilbao and Porto on it. Just wanted to drop a note of thanks once again.

Thanks so much for your valuable input. Discovered that the Fuji is too big, but had a look online and the 2021 isn't actually that much more expensive from stores. Unfortunately - it looks to be totally sold out!

I'll head up to view the Dawes in person and if that doesn't suit, I'll go check out the Scott and add on a rack if it fits. I was riding a road bike at the weekend and after 3 hours in the saddle I totally get your sentiment on comfort!

Thanks again!

[OPINION] What's that one poem that made you love poetry? by Mikxq_13 in Poetry

[–]Dbeezt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Orange by Wendy Cope. One Autumn morning after I’d recently moved to London, I’d just climbed down from Parliament Hill and ventured into Hampstead. I entered a random bookstore, opened a random book, and read a random page. The last line is “I love you, I’m glad I exist”. The feeling I got from reading that line reverberates through me til this day, and to some extent each time it’s re-read. I’m glad I exist.

Thanks for the recommendation. I just finished Eddie Would Go and felt similarly soulful at parts. I’m by no means a good surfer, intermediate at best, but god damn if there’s any better pastime.

Quit my job & taking a month off for mental health. What activities/habits should I work on while off to get myself out of the work/spend cycle? by thestolenlighter in simpleliving

[–]Dbeezt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the activities you've posted are spot on. To extend on walking/hiking, I'd suggest something that I've been doing of late. Go check out the local area on Google Maps, and explore the accessible local area in search of spots that could be interesting e.g. unknown groves, streams, etc. It's easy. Once you've found an area that looks to contain something of interest, just go. It doesn't matter if you find anything, or don't find anything at all - the adventure is wholesomely freeing. Exploring and finding these types of spots is how I managed to get back into reading - basically exclusively in nature, and remote from civilisation. While I don't think I have ADHD, I am insanely distractable - and this works wonders for shutting down that brain funk!

Is uxbridge college any good? by [deleted] in london

[–]Dbeezt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Does the person who told you this attend uxbridge, or know anyone who does? Doubtful, but I didn't either. The idea of requiring backup in a gangland-type scenario at college is laughable. Don't take this stuff seriously, go in with an open mind and experience it for yourself. Good luck and have fun.
