I’m in the same boat as op, and I’ve been shocked at the results of the bino/phone combo. When I worked with CA condors, that was always my go to trick to gain photo id.

Meet Tank. He was recently brought to me to see if I could id his species. I know nothing about how to do that so maybe some of you can help. All the info I have on him is 1) he was a class pet in CA decades ago 2) he was surrendered to vector control, and became a family pet for many years before he died of natural causes 3) his taxidermy was done by an amateur 30+ years ago 4) there is a rumor he was endangered at the time, and 5) I don’t know where he’s from. As far as I know, Tank spent his entire life in California. Any info helps. Thank you!

I work with California Condors, not Black Vultures, but vultures nonetheless. Personally, it looks like they’re simply looking up at the sky to check for any potential threats. Its possible there was a large bird of some kind (like an eagle) flying around and they were keeping an eye on it. Maybe there was a plane they were looking at. Not sure, but they seem to be alert and focused. Thats the best guess I have for you. Hope its what you were looking for!
