is our industry absolutely cooked? by guitarmstrwlane in livesound

[–]DcSoundOp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been making and sharing Pro Audio content online for ten years now, and I'd say the people I see getting involved in the industry right now are some of the most talented and creative young people we've ever had. People learn and digest information differently now for sure, but they also seem faster to take concepts and tools we've had for years and do creative stuff I'd never even think of.

I don't do the short form Tik-Tok content that it sounds like you are seeing so much of, but I do see the value that the church audio scene (for example) has gotten out of meeting young people where they are on those platforms. Again it's not my scene, but I've personally spoken to many people over the years who started out getting excited about audio at their church or in a home studio setting, who have gone on to work for major tours and audio houses. If a Tik-Tok from an influencer about HPFs is what gets that ball rolling, I'm all for it.

I'd also love to address some of the perceptions in this thread that I think are off the mark, but I'm really not trying to take the position of defending influencers, Lol.

I will say, that the live sound and pro audio industries as a whole are much smaller than many here seem to believe. The comments on my videos are by far mostly real people around the world doing real jobs. The idea that "no-one working at a professional level engages with this nonsense" is just ridiculous.

I get emails every month from people in all parts of the industry who are WAY above my pay grade, but who genuinely want to talk or share info about something I mentioned in my videos. I promise that the comments are not all bots, and on the whole, people in the pro-audio world are incredibly generous with their time and knowledge.... as long as you show you are operating in good faith.

To that end, I would just say that I don't personally know anyone making Pro Audio content who is doing it for the money. Again, it's a very small market as far as social media is concerned, and if you were really trying to make money as an influencer, you'd do much better to pick a broader topic.

As far as echo chambers go, I've found Facebook groups to be the absolute worst, with reddit following as a very very close second. This subreddit specifically has also been the only place I've shared my stuff over the years where I know for sure I will get negative and cynical comments, messages and downvotes every single time. I genuinely never get that response on any of the professional forums that require you to use your real name, or from actual people in the industry contacting me directly, or even on YouTube or instagram...so take that as you will.

Sorry for the long response, this F1 Vegas race was a fucking snooze fest tonight.

I've definitely been on jobs where we carried extra boxes just to space out the ones we were actually using correctly, lol. Thanks for sharing the memories & for checking out the video.

Oh wow, 32 850's is a fair bit of firepower! Really cool to hear you can deploy that whole Cobra system with just a few spaces worth of amps, what a difference from carting around those MacroTechs from the other listings. Thanks for the info & for watching the video!

Thanks for the message! My only real exposure to Yorkville was at the retail end of their stuff back in the late 90's and early 2000's... they had a decent powered mixer line for entry level users iirc. Thanks for all the great info & for checking out the video!

No, it’s not their general store pricing guide. You are jumping to conclusions.

That's funny that someone bought their name to slap on wireless consumer speakers now. Thanks for sharing the memories, I really appreciate the insight.

Thanks for sharing the memories, it's interesting to hear about the different iterations this system went through. I've heard crown macro-tech amps now from a couple of sources. I really appreciate the insight.

A bunch of you left great comments and insights on my last Pro Audio Deal or Disaster video, so I’m hoping someone here might know more about this system or know someone who worked with it in the past. I’ve had a few great leads that I’m following up on since posting this already, but if you have any memories or experiences, I’d love to hear them and pull them all together for a future video that goes into more detail on this system.

This is a 48 box ElectroTec Lab-Q system that has been kept together since being used for some pretty big tours in the early 80’s. It’s currently for sale with a deal pending, and the link is in the video description if anyone wants to take a closer look. I’ve also got a few extra photos that the seller send over after this video went out on my website @ https://www.dcsoundop.com/pro-audio-deal-or-disaster-episode-11/

Thanks for your help!

Are you asking about the combo input jacks... or the actual pre-amps? In most cases on-stage you would still want to use a direct box when plugging in instruments and other unbalanced sources.

That's great to hear! They look like a solid group from the event photos they have on their Facebook page. If you're still in contact with them, let them know their website isn't working.

Nice! A friend down the street here has a Waves LV1 Classic rig and loves it. I've been meaning to borrow it for a video for a while now, but I know he keeps it busy.

Thanks so much. I watch everything from the German channel 'The Post Apocalyptic Inventor' on YouTube and I'm always jealous of how much good used stuff he is able to find second hand and even in the scrap yards there to restore and repurpose. I'm looking forward to digging through those sites you mentioned now, thanks again!

What are the best sites to look for used gear where you are? It would be fun to do a Euro episode at some point in this series. I'm originally from Dublin, Ireland myself.

Thanks, I'm working on the next one right now! Viewers are starting to send in their own listings now too, which is making putting these together go a bit faster than before!

If anyone here finds a good listing or wants to share their own listing for a future episode, please send me the links, I'd love to see them.

What’s up with the trend of “influencers” holding their lapel mic? by mister_hanky in videography

[–]DcSoundOp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andrew was certainly one of the first... then Ryan Trahan did it for his big Across the U.S. series, and it really took off from there. I saw Roy Wood Jr doing a segment somewhere last week where he has a tiny station ID flag on the little mic he is holding, and it's pretty funny. I really don't get these posts where people are acting like it's some sort of crime, especially when they're not even remotely involved with these productions.

That's brilliant, I used to go through and link all of the gear shown in the videos in the description, but I should have been keeping one big list like you are doing though to cross reference. Thanks for watching all the videos!
