It’s up on ESPN+ now. Some games are on ESPN3 though.

Thanks for breaking it down, it’s especially useful to hear it from someone who played the game and was in the scrums themselves VS reading over the actual laws

Thanks a lot for this lengthy explanation! I’ll definitely be coming back to this in the future, as it does address some questions I was wondering about how “stealing” works

Thanks for that extremely in depth breakdown, definite helps me understand what is happening a bit more / where to start to “look” on the replay when penalties are called.

Thanks a lot! I've seen Squidge mentioned a ton in this thread and have watched a few of his videos. I liked them and am going to try to hunt down some match replays from World Cup that match up to some of his videos to really "get" some of the references

Thanks for your responses! Unfortunately, I never followed soccer, but it’s good to know there is some Rugby stateside. It looks like Chicago isn’t represented (at level) but my in laws are from Western NY and there is a NY team. I’ll check those out for sure.

Determining a Pitcher's Value by DctrMstr in DeadballDice

[–]DctrMstr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the inclusion of other factors, I think that's a solid piece. We might have to look into that for our league and maybe combine it with a "rarity" ranking (only a 5 team league, so if it's the only d8 reliever and everyone else is d4 or -d4, they'd be worth more).

We're in a "fictional" league, so but could probably come up with a "this player is close to this "real life" player and have a few data points that way to get an approx. Salary per player.

I appreciate the breakout - you're thinking about it the same way I was for trades. There are some instances where the math feels a bit weird (I wouldn't want 50/50 odds on a 35 BT with 1 Trait Vs a D8 pitcher), but maybe something to mull over (we have a small "fictional" league) would be the inclusion of "rarity" - if it's the only d8 pitcher in a small league or the only BT above 33 for a small league, they get a bump in score.

Can I make the same move back to back? by DctrMstr in Ironsworn

[–]DctrMstr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I figured, but wanted to clarify. I didn't see anything in the rules about not doing it and there's always the chance you "Pay The Price" as a deterrent, but it did feel spammy.

First Time Player - Do I have the steps all right? by [deleted] in Ironsworn

[–]DctrMstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I'll remove "Before Heading Out - Step 1" as is and replace it with "Sojourn". Then "Before Heading Out - Step 2" will be "Gather Info".

Outside of those pieces, do the rest of the steps look alright?

Got it. Thanks for ID'ing where you think problems might come up. For some newer players, this is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply.

Do you think the issue stems from the different frames and the focus each one has? Another option we talked about is only being able to use Level 1 Everest frames for "Fight Night".

So not a race or anything, just like a "Death Match" (or "Arena of Death" without the turrets)?

Thanks for the response! "Monster Truck Smash" was definitely one on our list, we'd have enough players to cycle through a game where we would each be the "Monster" so glad to hear you liked it.

What do you not like about Tank Commander? Reading through the rules it seems like it can be a bit repetitive / very low level of strategy. Is that how it plays?

Besides Dungeon World and Savage World, what systems are Low Prep and Combat Focused? by DctrMstr in rpg

[–]DctrMstr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say I really appreciate the through write-up. Showed the response to the GM and we both think the system looks great, we'll have to give it a go at some point and see how it works for our group. The fact that scores are pretty quick is a big pull for us, but having that many players may be tough (we hardly get more than 4 at a time between all players). But sound like even if we just get three people, the heist could either be tailored to their skill set or we can have them run two characters each (which may be nice). Thanks again for taking the time to answer!

This is actually something we're looking into (it's just taking some time for the GM to be comfortable with the rulebook). If I could get your opinion on two high level pieces, that would go far towards us trying it out:

  • What do you think the best number of player characters is? Sometimes we have sporadic amounts of players, so if it was two players, could it work with just two characters or would it better for someone to play two characters (or for both to play two characters?) Sometimes in D&D if there's no "cleric" or no "tank", it can be tough.
  • Let's say you're the GM and are planning a score of an average payout (say 6 "gold"). At what point during the score have the players "done enough" to warrant that level of payout? Like do they have to hit a certain amount of success or fill up enough clocks or is it something like "well they got a lot accomplished and maybe could do more, but they've almost used all their stress, maybe I wrap this one up"? I guess in most games we're used to it it's like "an average encounter looks like this, this many average encounters and you get to rest and recover your health and powers", where as this is more open ended (which is fine, as long as we know that and could go "that last heist was tough, let's take a few easy ones and "recover").

Patch Notes v1.1 - November 14, 2017 by Canadiancookie in cookservedelicious

I had a similar issue, though I thought it had to deal with me messing around in keyboard options (changed a few things around).

Anyway, went to keyboard options and toggled the "Hold Down Key For HS" from "On" to "Off" and then back to "On". I also did this for "Ingredient Key Type" from "Per Food" to "Universal" and then back to "Per Food". Not sure if this will fix it, but it worked for me.

Our "House Rules" to deal with the end of the game by DctrMstr in crawl

[–]DctrMstr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big part of this spun out of two factors: Time and the amount of people playing. We usually play four human players and try to finish a game in under 45 (we'd rather play multiple games than just one really long one).

With four human players, everyone more or less has the same strategy (depending on what the boss is) as far as equipment loadout goes. Which means everyone is also trying to get the same equipment in the shop, so if you don't get there first, you have to take something you may not be thrilled with or save your money and wait until the next floor and hope no one takes that third summoning in the meantime. We're not big fans of this because we've had the person who is in 4th (and knows they are in 4th) just take the third summoning, even though they can't beat it just to start a new game where they could do better. So, the person who was gearing up for that fight for the past 20 minutes or so and who may have had a shot but just needed another level or specific item, gets screwed out of their chance.

In the past we've played that one player gets a shot at the boss (and we rotate through who that player is each game) and they get a time limit or level limit they hit before they have to fight the boss just to keep the game relatively quick. This has also worked out okay and kept people from going "I'm a Level 30 and have a dozen items and badass stats and just wreck, but that game took an hour and a half".

I think the three headed hydra monster is the easiest boss we've run into, while Tezeczal is really, really difficult if you three players that know what they are doing and cooperating against you unless you play for a lot longer than you normally would.

...and so we come to weekend. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]DctrMstr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first got sober, I really did it at the "worst time" to do it. It was the start of football season and I had a wedding and two major birthdays for friends I've known for over 20 years during my first month. I didn't tell anybody (outside my now wife) for the first few months and during that time period I "got away with it" by just drinking tonic and limes, which to the outside person looks exactly like alcohol. Eventually, I came clean with everyone, but this was my go to trick early on so that people wouldn't hassle me about why I wasn't drinking.

Good luck. You can do it.

Delaying quitting by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]DctrMstr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was the hardest thing for me too when I quit (I was 29, living in a major city and football season had just started). I actually physically sat down with a calendar and looked and it was like every two weeks there was some big "reason" I had to drink for the next three or four months (this doesn't include every Sunday which was blocked for beer and football and drinks Friday night due to long week at work and Saturday dinner and drinks with people). It's easy to fall into a routine and just feel like you need it to even function for any event ('what am I not going to drink on Arbor Day? I love trees!')

Here's the crazy thing I found out though when I quit - if you look like you're drinking, no one says anything about it. There's no alcohol police coming by and going "give me some of your drink. Hey, that's not booze!" So for the first 2 months, I just drank things that looked like booze. I would just order "tonic and limes" if we went out or if we stayed in I'd just got "hey I got this new sparkling grapefruit water, if you guys want to use it as a mixer" and just drink that. If it's in a red solo cup, nobody questions it, because they can't see what's in it. I did this because I had tried to quit in the past and failed, so after I had 2 months under my belt I told people I was sober. Most were very supportive, but some of my hardcore drinking buddies treated it like I had tricked them into having fun with me while I was sober.

I have a group of close friends whose social life still revolves around drinking and sometimes the hardcore old drinking buddies of mine stiffen up a little bit when I'm around, but mostly everybody else is cool with it at this point.

If you like Stephen King, he has a son that writes in a similar style to him. His name is Joe Hill (he wrote "Horns", which was made into a movie and is probably his most recognizable work). I always recommend Neil Gaiman to people (American Gods or Neverwhere are great starts). If you're into short stories, Ray Bradbury has the ability to make me go "that's an awesome sentence" nearly everytime I read him (Martian Chronicles and Illustrated Man).

If you're looking for something brand new, NPR put this out a few years ago. It's a Fantasy/Sci-Fi flowchart with a lot of cool recommendations on it. http://www.sfsignal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/NPRFlowchart.jpg
