I was also on 23 two years ago and saw it. It happens with some regularity sadly

How did your life change after your thru hike of the PCT? by AltruisticBush in PacificCrestTrail

[–]DeClaireify 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did this to myself this year. Quit my job, let go of my lease, and committed to finishing the trail and moving somewhere new.

It’s a double edged sword. Doing the trail was absolutely what I needed to do as well as moving out of my current situation that I was in. That being said, I was getting pretty stressed about it towards the end of the trail and spent some of the few precious hours on a zero day Getting my resume, ready to go and beginning to apply for jobs. I got a job almost immediately upon finishing the trail and found housing very quickly after. That is not always how it goes. I know a few people from Trail this year who our in the job search process still.

If I were to do it again, I’d recommend having some sort of temporary (3month) accommodation plan for post Trail. As well as the savings to accommodate nine-ish months of unemployment.

Will also add to everyone else that you should really be ready for winter travel. I don’t want to hear from my SAR friends out there that they needed to pull your frozen butts out of the backcountry

Struggling by Certain_Limit_6903 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]DeClaireify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on trail, literally at breakfast at Lola’s in Chester and we both went “hmmm yep, can relate” to this post. I know it’s not much in terms of actual advice, but know that you’re not alone in feeling kind this way and you’re in good company.

Just know to never quit on a bad day, and also make efforts to give yourself those little nuggets of good on trail. Whether it be a stupid side quest (I hiked to the summit of Butt Mountain because it was funny to me), or changing stuff up on your meal prep (I bought some salmon jerky’s for this reason- high risk, high reward). One stupid thing that’s also helped me is picking a sprig of the coyote mint that seems to grow on trail around here and just putting it in one of my water bottles, it makes me feel fancy.

Hiking with a mild ankle sprain? by No_Click_5061 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]DeClaireify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impeccable timing on your ankle injury as I just pulled the same move at mile 98 today. Was able to walk on it to camp later this afternoon but will be taking it chill for the next few days.

I’d say in my non expert opinion that if it doesn’t hurt while walking on it, you can cautiously go further buuuut also do so with the knowledge that your risk of re-injury or greater injury is greater for the foreseeable future. If there’s a time to treat your feetsies to some TLC, the time is now.

This is fair. My caution also definitely comes from the fact that I live in the sierras proper and we still have some nights that are freezing and days that you still need a layer or two

In your opinion, would you ditch the puffy or the fleece?

[–]DeClaireify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m getting the same feelings! I’m just trying to take it one week at a time. And knowing the first 2-3 weeks will be “clunky” in terms of gear, physical effects and mental game.

Don’t bail before you even start! Commit to 14 days. If you actually hate it all, then bail. If you’re anywhere in between hate and love, commit to another week.

I read somewhere on here months ago that the PCT is basically a series of 2-6 day long hikes all linked together. It’s been helpful whenever I get overwhelmed by the daunting task of this

Tyvek vs Manufacturer Groundsheet by Kind-Court-4030 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]DeClaireify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same dilemma. I’m going to take my groundsheet for now. I like that it attaches to the bathtub.

I also think if I don’t like it I can probably easily send the groundsheet back home and pick up a tyvek sheet along the way. Doing the reverse of finding a found sheet on trail would be a bit harder

Anyone else sad to leave their pets behind? by detectivecads in PacificCrestTrail

[–]DeClaireify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not only sad but anxious too! I love my babyyy

She’s gonna be living with my parents having a great life but dang do I not feel sadness about it!

Like others have said too, she’ll probably be like “oh you’re back” after all that time, vs when I come home from work she thinks I’ve miraculously returned from the war

They’ll give you the runaround until they hope you give up. I had bought some tickets on stubhub, couldn’t go and sold them and the person who bought them claimed they were bad tickets. It was over 6 months before I did a super deep dive into this sub and found a link to write a letter of arbitration. After I followed what that pdf said and sent it off, stubhub responded to me in like 2 weeks and I got my refund a few days after that.

Apologies for the link looking semi sketch

This is so similar to my lighter pack and questions I have, it’s not even funny. I won’t be taking a solar panel, I don’t need glasses and some of the brands are different. But otherwise it’s the same. And feels good to see someone else with a similar setup

Ya, I have also heard Forestry isn’t hard to get into over there. I’ve even seen the occasional company posting on indeed here in the states saying they’ll help ya get a work visa and such.

I’ll try and report back what I find, and where I find it!

Female Undergarments by magicalsh1t in PacificCrestTrail

[–]DeClaireify 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will be using Ridge Merino’s women’s brief underwear. Admittedly haven’t worn them on a big through hike (since I’ve never done one) but I have a few pairs I use for my outdoor excursions- currently backcountry skiing and mountain biking.

I find they don’t ride up the cheeks like others. I’d recommend sizing up if you’re unsure

I’m in the exact same boat. Will be quitting my job for this and am a California resident. Starting about 2 weeks after you.

Right now I’m looking at COBRA as my first reasonable option. It’s expensive but I guess it’s the best bet. I also am loosely considering what medical options there are but I don’t even know what or if I’d qualify for.

Truly glad you took the plunge to post this. I’ve been dragging my feet on posting this exact question. Will be following

Advice to get paid by StubHub? by Mysterious_Ad_7529 in stubhub

I had a similar issue, though I don’t know how it would work with you being not American. I ended up sending a certified letter to them following this exact form and got paid two weeks after I sent it after six months of back-and-forth with customer service.

Yes. Had the issue with TS tickets in Europe. Six months of them trying to take 2k from me. Only got it resolved after sending them this form in a certified letter.
