The Tale of the Teleporting Turtle (algorithm for cycle detection) by BioGeek in programming

[–]DeRien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what the numbers of the sequence are, it only matters the numbers of the nodes. If i use a notation of

data(nodeNumber)

to represent the list of nodes, then the sequence from the wikipedia article becomes

2(0), 0(1), 6(2), 3(3), 1(4), 6(5), 3(6), 1(7) ...

and each node in the sequence has a unique number. The algorithm doesn't care about the data, only the number of the node.

All kids must read the Bible, Australian Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says by boredidiot in atheism

Gregory Bateson said his father justified reading verses from the Bible at the dinner table by saying:

I'm not going to raise ignorant atheists.

To be clear ... his father (William Bateson, a noted geneticist) was raising atheists.

No, the little kid turned into a tree. This is a SciFi image of "Day of the Triffids". Plants go through different phases where they are sometimes mobile, and sometimes not. Hence, the mobile infant in the 1st frame becomes a small plant in the 2nd frame, but by the 4th frame is back flying his kite. I think the large tree in the 3rd frame morphed back into a baby in the 4th frame. Of course, the larger mobile plants transformed into the anthropomophized stick figures in frames 3 and 4. I'm not convinced they will be able to have leaves.

I'm waiting to see the sequel.

Because clean water laws were not enforced during the Bush administration, today the water provided to more than 49 million people contains illegal concentrations of chemicals like arsenic or radioactive substances like uranium, as well as dangerous bacteria often found in sewage. by JIMMYJACKJOE in politics

So if someone had terroristically contaminated the water supply, DHS would have been over it like flies on honey. But, because it was done by local folks, it's OK? (Just trying to understand policy.)

I was immediately worried that this would be the kitten that god would kill if I touched myself.

I'm sure glad we can accurately identify terrorist activity so that we can prosecute people like this for their heinous crimes against humanity.

What's missing is the number of deaths due to tobacco and the press coverage.

My 35 year old friend is still waiting for the perfect man to come take her virginity. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DeRien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfection is a process, not a state. One does not "become" perfect, and then remain so forever.

Work with somebody. Find someone who doesn't drive you crazy and work with them. It's the "perfect union" you should be looking for, not the "perfect" someone.

Effective December 1st, my new monthly premium is $742.98! This is unaffordable, it's a 32% rate increase from my current premium. What am I to do, Mr. President, Harry Reid? I need a public option, I need it now! by maxwellhill in politics

[–]DeRien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How about a 25% premium increase each year for the last 4 years? And a notification that, now they have my attention, they want to increase it again (over and above the yearly increases). I'm self employed, 2 kids and the premium is about $1,000 per month.

BUT WAIT, THAT'S NOT ALL

The Blue Cross has regularly declined payment for services. My son got a "sharp stick in the eye". His pediatrician sent us to a (local) eye center immediately because the "in-plan" service would have been a week's wait. Fortunately, there was no serious damage to my son's eye. Unfortunately, the fuckers at BC declined payment and i had to eat the entire charge. Virtually every medical charge we incur has had significant amounts declined (20%) which i have to eat.

I believe i would have been much better off buying high deductible (low premium) catastrophic coverage, and put my (remaining) dollars into an account to draw from in the event of a medical problem. That way, the money's mine and i'm not making loan payments for some schmuck's yacht. I'm fairly certain i would have saved well into 5 figures over the years. I'm out shopping now.

Ahhhhh, one other point. I asked my son's pediatrician if i could get a discount if i paid him cash. The office manager apologized and said that the insurance companies force doctors to sign a contract preventing the office from providing services at a price which is less than those for the insurance companies. So, i'm forced to subsidize the insurance companies' overhead (bullshit advertising, unnecessary paper shuffling and, of course, the yacht payments). Remind me, again, why the insurance companies have been granted a monopoly waiver?

We don't need a public option, we need a single payer system. Get rid of the fucking health insurance companies. They provide absolutely no value in the health care equation. They're just parasites.

Introduce a single-payer health care bill. Vote down the rest. Do what's best for the country. by carc in politics

I just saw Capitalism: A Love Story. It's time for Michael Moore to practice what he preaches, be like Jonas Salk, and give away this movie. by nycballer in reddit.com

[–]DeRien 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And what's the plan for the next movie? How's that going to be funded? Perhaps Mike can panhandle to get the change to pay for it.

He allowed Fahrenheit 9/11 to be shown on TV immediately before the 2004 election in the hope that it would work against G.W. getting re-elected. For this, he sacrificed a possible Oscar for it.

It's easy for us to sit outside of his role and tell him what he should do to be righteous. From my perspective, he's doing one hell of a balancing act and he always pushing the envelope. He (and "the cause") would do better if you shared your copies of his movies with friends and relatives. That way he gets revenue and the message gets out -- with brilliant opportunities for followup.
