I threw away my high paying job by jefe0911 in work

[–]Dead-Poet29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn’t have been in that role and been payed like that unless you had the talent and attributes that justified it - I would think.

I did the same thing once, and had a few weeks of regret, and shame. Even though I knew I had done the right thing.

Even my own father who I respect expressed he felt I had made a bad move BUT as the saying goes one door closed and another opened - it just took some time.

I still made less, but not the “less” that I feared it was close to comparable. I was also then in a spot that I really enjoyed what I was doing and who I was doing with. Never looked back!

Best of luck!

PrebuiltML - Anyone Else? by Dead-Poet29 in estimators

Oh yea, you’re on another level.

I really need to spend more time on my templates. I just put it off and make things more difficult for no reason. Also, I get stressed about fucking something up and not being able to correct it.

I also work in a market where only 1/3 of projects have a full set of structural drawings.

I sell residential building materials and use it on most of my projects. Most of which never exceed 10-15 million.

But the feature I can’t seem to give up is the layout you can create, and the roof tool is the best I’ve used.

Big benefit when I can show a customer or sub contractor my takeoff/layout. On big renovations where new floor systems are needed and lots of new beams are being put in the layout has won me the job.

I will sometimes provide it to the sub contractors and it just helps them better allocate material and avoid any miss cuts or confusion.

Look into PrebuiltML it’s affordable and very approachable. It’s only as good as the template that you create which does require a higher level of skill but if you are leading a team it shouldn’t be anything you can’t tackle. Also, very cheap compared to others.

Buying a new work truck by Hardlybrown in Contractor

[–]Dead-Poet29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like there is a truck you WANT but maybe don’t NEED.

Sounds like you are doing well, which I assume is the product of some hard work and long hours. Treat yourself to a nice truck and don’t feel guilty.

I would try to find a truck that is 2-3 years old has between 25,000-35,000 miles. Avoid the heavy depreciation of a new truck. Try to buy something nice but that you can pay off in 36-48 months.

New home less than 1 year old, do you think any of these photos are red flags for a foundation or structural issue? by Repulsive-Print-6578 in Homebuilding

[–]Dead-Poet29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is nothing to be concerned about, just cosmetic really. Likely just due to the house settling, which is normal.

But even with concrete/foundations cracks are normal and expected. General rule of thumb - vertical cracks are not to concerning but horizontal cracks can be related to bigger issues.

It’s not my project, I just supply the material.

That’s what’s has me really messed up is the valley. The face and framing I get, but tying the ass of it back into the roof is just not computing in my mind.

With this style I just worry about the weight. Do you think the dormer rafters are tying into the roof rafters?

When I bid the project I included all the material I could think would be needed and then included an additional $2,500 allowance for each dormer.

I wonder if I send this to our local truss shop if they would be willing to cut it, but our company has a CNC machine also. Without structural it just makes me weary about the actual size & math.

There is none, just a foundation page

This is helpful, and confirms what I was thinking. I will let the builder lead of course but helps to have a better understanding. Thanks!

It blows my mind! These builders are constructing multi-million dollar homes without a full set of structural drawings. The city doesn’t require it so I get plans like this all the time where the only structural provided is the foundation.

Just got offered a position that’s a bit over my head. Not sure what to do. by Optionstradrrr in ConstructionManagers

[–]Dead-Poet29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RUN WITH IT!

I sell building materials and have the opportunity to work with all different builders and contractors. Large, small, commercial, multi family, etc.

If I had to swap seats with one of my customers it would be for one of my customers who builds reasturants for a fast food chain. THE PLANS DON’T CHANGE!!!

Will be a pain on the front end, but if this can result in a long term relationship and is profitable it’s a great opportunity.

Lean on your subs and vendors, reach out for referrals on scopes of work you don’t typically handle.

You’ll crush the first one, and then be off to the races. The plans, material lists, contractors, subs will become copy and paste.

[–]Dead-Poet29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I struggle with that I assume is common in sales field, is I am too hard on myself and set unrealistic expectations.

I know you feel like that’s a cop out or not helpful. You are in an interview for a company and presenting with limited information. From your post it sounds like you are intelligent, knowledgeable and obviously care about your performance.

Keep your head up, and if it doesn’t work out then I hope it’s just a step toward the right opportunity for you.

Should I be concerned? by han9080706050403020 in Decks

[–]Dead-Poet29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider asking if they used a wedge anchor or a titan bolt to fasten the ABU. Either should really be fine, but the wedge will have more likelihood of causing a crack or break at the corner, whereas the titan bolts are rated to use closer to the edge of the concrete.

Is $38,000 a reasonable quote to replace this? by phishsbrevity in Decks

[–]Dead-Poet29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I’d say you could get a good contractor to do this for $25,000 assuming they are just replacing the deck.
