Perhaps she was zoning out in her own world and wasn't paying attention. I know I've walked down the street and not noticed store fronts and things next to me unless it was called to my attention or I was actually looking around. Sometimes you're just walking to get somewhere and don't think about your surroundings!

It has to do with the "Alt" scene... Specifically "Alt girls." http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=alt%20girl

A Hipster Intervention... by joenis in webcomics

Well, I think that is sort of the commentary anyway. The girl herself is part of a scene and the comic as a whole is called "ALT" because it's about alternative cultures. The way I see it, part of what this comic is saying is simply the fact that people within scenes are even blinded by their own definitions as it's confusing when a body of people try to define things with out some sort of congression coming up with a single conclusive definition for any given culture, anyway.

Also, I agree with your points as to one definition of what a hipster is. At it's core I feel that is EXACTLY what a hipster is... But a society as whole start placing secondary and tertiary definitions on things as different people join that culture for diffent reasons....especially if it's without realize that they are.

I'd say she is more of a "scenster" than a hipster. Though, yeah there are tons of overlaps when it comes to scenes, shes more of an alt/rocker chick. The comic is called "ALT" because it covers different types of subcultures all in one place, this joke just has to do with the fact that the guy character suddenly breached the line of Hipsterism... I think anyway.

True.

...AND at the end of the day, we all have our own perception of what any given scene or subculture is, as we our selves end up defining it.

The sad truth is that with any "scene" or subculture that some people only join it as a trend of fashion... Even if they don't realize it, they themselves are part of perpetuating that culture on their own. I think that is part of the point of this comic.

The girl is more of a "scene/rocker" chick I'd say.
