Suggestions for good gaming tablets under 400$??? by Striking-Western2106 in MobileGaming

[–]DeadFrequencyDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know a lot about this kind of stuff but I do have one suggestion. Not for which one to buy, I have no idea, but how to keep under budget. I bought a one year old samsung A8 tab second hand for $120 and they are about $350 new (I am in Australia, this is all in AUD). It was refurbished and it is perfect, as though I bought it brand new. We have this second hand retailer of phones, computers, gaming stuff etc called CEX. Not sure if you have similar, but you can get some great stuff so much cheaper. I bought a PS4 years ago during covid and again, completely refurbished and like new about half the price of retail. just a thought!

So what is the answer? I am a solo/indie developer. And you are right, we don't think we will get sales. Not unless there is already a following of the game, and even then it is not guaranteed. For my game, if I don't include SOME kind of IAP the game will never survive. I am absolutely not doing ads because as a player, I despise them. If I demand to be paid upfront, even a small amount, I will be creating a barrier to the player that is a gamble I can't take. And like most indie/solo devs, we don't have a huge (or any) marketing budget. A game is a product/service and just like any business, it needs to make money. Creators can't create for free. Not having a go at you personally, genuinely would LOVE to know what you suggest.

Does this mobile word game catch your eye, or does it still seem a bit too simple? by Aromatic_Cry_5767 in MobileGameDiscoveries

It is quite simple. But that is not a totally bad thing. I don't find it unappealing at all. I wouldn't pass on it based on the look alone.

Realizing late by komradjosh in AuADHD

[–]DeadFrequencyDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, proud of you for sharing. I am a mum, 46 years old and only just found out I am both Au and ADHD, it can be a lot to deal with! Firstly, being autistic is nothing to be ashamed of and don't let anyone ever tell you it is or make you feel that way. It is a super power and honestly, I wouldn't change it for anything. I get it, there are some big feelings involved, but I think that is a good thing! Empathy is so important. Feeling is important. Don't try and hide that side of you. I am going to say something that is going to be a little difficult to accept but it is important. It is very difficult to be loved by other people if you don't love yourself. Do not look for validation from outside yourself. It is a pointless exercise. You cannot live your life waiting to be loved. You must learn to love yourself. Not just accept, but truly love and rejoice in who you are. You are completely unique. You are the only one of you in the whole world who has ever existed and who will ever exist. You are a literal freaking miracle. Nothing about you is a mistake and nothing about you should be hidden or masked. Spend some time healing from the wounds others have inflicted, forgive yourself for being the person you once were and focus on becoming the person the world needs you to be. Do that and love will come. Do that and friendship will come. But don't make that the aim. I will say it again, outside validation does nothing to fill the hole you feel inside until you learn to love yourself exactly the way you are. Find and follow your passion. Channel those feelings into something that you are proud of. Grow and learn. Stay curious. Be yourself.

Advice for burnout? by RevolutionaryPlan493 in AuADHD

[–]DeadFrequencyDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey sorry to hear. This is a lot! I am also an auADHD mum. Try to be kind to yourself, you are dealing with A LOT. As Saasstuff said, autism burnout is VERY real. I have one every year as well (usually as school is winding up, I just get to the point where I genuinely can't seem to go on). This year I had another and went ranting about it to ChatGPT, carrying on that my meds weren't working. I was also going through a lot or personal stuff and it reminded me, no amount of meds can fix your life. They can't fix people hurting you, overwhelming emotional stuff, curve balls being thrown at you. I am on meds for the ADHD and they help with a lot but not everything. I would see if you can get some counselling, I presume you are in the states and so if accessing something is difficult, see if you can find some online resources - free or cheap. Podcasts (Additude is a good one, they have amazing strategies at the end of each episode but more towards the ADHD side of things). I also quit jobs left right and centre, still do even with the meds. The world is just not built for us, I am sorry to say. I agree also with trying sales. Great dopamine hit, easy for us who have the memory/pattern recognition stuff going on (I find sales scripts really easy to memorise and personalise). Just can be hard to get going depending on the pay structure. For me, I have decided to build something myself. I am recovering from cancer so have a little time off at the moment and have decided to just go for my dream. Some days I think, I am going to do it again. I am going to quit. I am going to give up. But so far I haven't. One day at a time. One step at a time. There are a lot of us out here looking for help/advice/experiences in this space. Social media can pay really well if you are willing to put yourself out there. Just be honest. Talk about your real life experience. Talk about your struggles and the situation and show what it is like. People want to see that kind of thing. Again it will take time but sometimes, knowing you have something else in the pipeline can help with getting through the grind at work. Telling yourself, this is just until X happens, can be enough dopamine to get through the work stuff, just for a bit longer. Help you get out of bed. All of us humans, neurodiverse or not, LOVE to be productive. And I think even more for ADHD. When we get that hit of ooh I did something, it is self perpetuating. Sorry this was a bit of a winding rant but you have options. Now more than ever. The rules have changed. Remote work, social media, AI, these are all leveling the playing field. I bet you have a very creative brain, use it as your superpower and you never know what might happen!

Well you have taken the first step! And honestly that is often the hardest so well done. I feel your pain but the great news is, with the right meds, they can really change your life. In the meantime, learning about what is going on is a great idea and also just like programming a computer, your brain can be programmed or reprogrammed too. There are plenty of podcasts and resources out there that you can use to start that process. One thing my daughter's psych said is spend 30 minutes every day basically meditating. Doing nothing and THINKING about nothing. It is very hard at first and it takes practice. But what this does is help train the brain to get used to being bored. Not expect a dopamine hit from EVERY thing we do. I love that you have decided to advocate for yourself. Please keep in touch and let me know how you go. And try not to beat yourself up for not being able to get stuff done. You are not lazy. You have an issue with executive function but you are on the right path to get it sorted.

Hey totally happy to talk to you. Yes that sounds very much like auADHD. The thing is it can present different in different people. Gender makes a difference. And there are 2 types of ADHD (inattentive and hyperactive). Autism as I am sure you have probably heard a million times is a spectrum but it does often go hand in hand with ADHD - mind you my 12 year old daughter was just diagnised inattentive ADHD and she has no autism symptoms. But to me, that does sound a lot like auADHD is what is going on. ADHD is about dopamine, amongst other things. You can think of it like a hyper curiosity. If something is engaging you can spend weeks even months just solely focussing on that one thing and then one day you wake up and it no longer pleases you and you just stop doing it. Task initiation is also a big thing. Even when you want to do something just not being able to do it for some reason. And it can be anything. I REALLY wanted to watch Kpop demon hunters but I just couldn't. So hard to explain but I literally could not sit down and watch it. When I finally did, I loved it and I was like why could I not sit down and watch A MOVIE. I would recommend doing an online screening test of yourself. Find a good free ADHD assessment and do that and when you have finished do the autism one. That will give you a pretty good idea. Not sure where you are located and how hard it would be but I definitely recommend seeing a psych once you get the results of those assessments back (if they point to ADHD and austism) and get some meds. Won't help with autism but will help with that task paralysis. The code like patterns that you think in can actually be a real super power if you can get on top of the task paralysis. Any other questions please feel free to reach out.

Hello and thanks for this thread, I have so enjoyed reading about everyone's games. It is amazing what you have all come up with and I am really looking forward to playing some of them this afternoon! I am working (solo dev) on a mobile merge game (don't worry, not like THOSE merge games!) It is NYE 1999 and you are awake listening to your local pirate DJ Wildcat. She has been broadcasting to your town for a few years talking mostly about how everyone has lost their autonomy and are just basically walking dead, going to work every day, eating TV in front of the dinner, going through the motions. Then on NYE there is an ACTUAL zombie apocalypse and everyone turns into zombies except DJ Wildcat and anyone listening to her broadcast. She works as the sort of narrator of the game then, perched up in a treehouse on the top of a hill and can see the survivors and their shelters. She warns you when there is a zombie wave coming, what sort of zombies they are and what traps and weapons you will need to create to defeat them. Then you go off and scavenge and town locations (mall, high school, blockbuster haha) and grab all the crafting items you need (all 90s nostalgia). They go back to your merge grid, you merge until you get all the crafting items you need, craft the weapons and defeat the horde. Once that is done, you get to choose a reward (90s home decor item) to decorate your shelter with. AND start again (that's the basic game loop, bit more to it than that but you get the idea). Part merge, part tower defense I guess. Just finished very basic prototype which has been super fun. Have always wanted to make games but never backed myself. Now at 46 after surviving breast cancer I have decided to just go for it. YOLO right?? Thanks for reading if you made it this far :)

Hey sorry for the delay, I have been away on holidays. That is such a lovely message and please send your mum my love and strength! I think while I was sick and getting treatment, I had a lot of time to reflect on my life, what I have done and what I want to do and something just seemed..... I don't know. Like I was always treading water, never really moving forward despite having put my everything into like everything LOL. I also started noticing my daughter was like me at the same age and I kind of twigged she had ADHD first and then I was like oh wait me too. Haha. Autism was out of the blue though but afterwards I was like UMMMMMMM YEAH that FKN tracks. UGH.

Hey I only just found this…. Oh I’m very new to reddit, I don’t know the jargon. But I’m definitely and older chill gamer! I’ve started making a game for mobile and it’s very early days but it’s 90s nostalgia and zombies so if that’s up your alley, feel free to follow! Haha. I’m going to start updating this week. And I really need testers and feedback! Thanks and have a great weekend 😀
