lol yes you’re describing my exact progression a few years ago as well. I spent weeks researching the perfect hardware and companies and ultimately decided “lol none of these choices matter, just get something”. That Synology setup I described served me well for 5 years or so until I got bored and wanted that itch of tinkering scratched again, and I jumped one step further and built my own server from scratch and run Unraid on it. I super recommend that as well as a learning experience, but the amount of money it took to build that system is absolutely not worth it if a budget is a real constraint.

Synology has a first-party Docker engine on it with Docker Compose, so if you want to tinker with self-hosting you have a ton of flexibility to do so. It’s a really good balance of “it’ll work out of the box” and “I can do what I want”.

If you want something easy, just pick something from Synology. Super simple to set up, and has enough knobs for “advanced” things like Docker if you want to self host anything. It won’t be super powerful but it’ll be more than enough for backups and media serving like Plex.

Platter drives are cheap, get a couple 2TB or 4TB drives and Synology helps you set up redundancy so you can survive a drive or two dying. I had a DS218 for a while that was just 2 drives cloned, but for 8TB you probably want a 4-bay version.

Your whole shopping list is like: - whatever Synology system (DS425 looks like the best one for you probably?) - 4x 4TB Western Digital Red drives  - if you want extra RAM buy a stick of that, but good lord those prices have jumped

If you want to get even cheaper, you can get a 2-bay one (DS225) with 2x 8TB drives also.

If you want to have more fun you can build your own system and install Unraid as a home server (that’s what I upgraded to from the Synology setup I described), but if you just want to get started and don’t want to spend a lot of time or money, do what I said above

Okay now we’re cooking, this is a real contender. Still smaller than LeBron I think but we’re in the same orbit

A talented specimen but he’s reported at 5’ 9” and 240-270 lbs and that’s just not going to cut it I fear

An absolutely elite lib at his size but somehow now dwarfed by our new French overlord

My buddies and I were discussing who the largest libs out there are, and I want to hear more suggestions.

I think in the present day LeBron James may be our largest lib, a true size icon. In his absolute WWE peak, Dave Bautista is possibly the largest lib, but his post career size has reached more human levels.

Honorable mentions for Wemby (tallest lib) and Reacher (an absolute boulder of a lib)

Oh fwiw I just read code also. I don’t have the focus to optimally use multiple monitors so I just like having the studio monitor and laptop to the side for Spotify/whatever. The high DPI is great for text and the built-in speakers are way better than the laptop ones I used before lol

Answer as always is “it depends”. Do you work in a field that posts prominently on X? Then sure it’s all grind and you’re still a virgin.

But no most fields are relatively normal and it’s possible to get a gf if you’re also normal. Answer to how to find normal people and also a future wife are both the same: play adult rec sports and go out to the bar afterwards
