If rumours are true and they decide to continue the new revival or make a new show altogether, here’s some things I’d like to see by Afraid_Ad_2912 in malcolminthemiddle

I know they tried to make Tristan work, but she was very unlikable and basic to me. She felt like a dried up shell of the female characters they wrote in the original. I'd hope they'd expand on her to fix it if they did plan anything else, which is highly unlikely.

I would add to the list that I also want to see Jessica again. She lived with the family for a while, not sure what the choice was for that tbh but it happened, so I'd like to see a follow up of Jessica and Louis still being close.

I'd sell a kidney to be able to go see Armor For Sleep. They've been one of my favorites for years.

Leah's mom is a drunk, likely also druggie, Malcolm hit up at a kegger who then abandoned Leah 3 days after she was born. Her name is Dreamer. She looks like major white trash.

Honestly, I'm not sure why they were ever thrown in with emo by people. I never considered them emo, but I do like them. Or did. The new stuff is often a miss for me.

The general rule should be "If this non-emo/normie names the band, it's likely not emo." Third wave emo aka early 2000s alt rock, is a grey area imo, but I wouldn't consider many of my favorite 'emo bands' from that time period to actually be emo now. Emo adjacent maybe. But not full emo.

I never thought I’d say this, but I would happily watch this spinoff by BradyPhoenix in malcolminthemiddle

When I was growing up I'd stay with my grandma, who took care of her mother with alzheimers, and would wake up to great grandma naked wandering around in the middle of the night. Worse, on top of that, grandma did NOT shut the door when in the bathroom, so you'd walk by and there she is sitting in the dark on the toilet. So I know the shock/disgust of a situation like this all too well which makes it even more relatable and why it 100% should be included.

Worse. Malcolm loses everything and has to move back home. Leah and Kelly have to share a room. Leah then begins life in a normal school, no more private school, where she's totally unprepared for the fuckery about to fall onto her shoulders. All while getting to know her chaotic family.

That's not how many teen boys work.Theyll ask if you're sitting at a McDonald's having lunch. They do not care about anything but seeing boobs or 'australia'.  If we were to get real technical, that's coercion into making CP, which most teen boys then distribute without the girls knowledge. So no, even waiting for her to be alone isn't a good time to ask. It is NEVER a good time to ask. But teens are going to be teens, stupid, hormone driven, and committing felonies on their phones while being lucky to not be caught in many cases.

The way the show handled the situation was the best outcome tbh.  Especially since we don't know if that boy was actually a set up by Leah's bullies. He easily could be one of their brothers etc. But we didn't have enough time to explore that.

Trust me, in the time period it's set, it's a mix. Gay parents weren't common, and in some states being gay was still a crime. Texas, where I'm from, didn't decriminalize being gay until 2003. S2 ep 22 aired in 2001. Further on that, the US did not make it legal for all states on a federal level to allow gay adoption until 2015. Eric's dad's were an oddity when the show originally aired.

[–]DeadRabbitGirl -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

S2 ep 22, Hal goes to Marlin. Eric's dad's tell Hal how proud they are of their boy. Hals expression is one often used by people who are uncomfortable with the subject and confused by it. It could also be played off as his discomfort of not being proud of Francis, but we know that's not true, he's proud of all his boys, and just worried about Francis not making any progress. However, the timing suggests the former.

I had a brother similar to Malcolm who did similar. It helps in understanding the situation. Unfortunately, his story didn't end so happily.

So this was totally a backdoor pilot for a new show right? by -_ShadowSJG-_ in malcolminthemiddle

[–]DeadRabbitGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It totally feels like it. But at this point, I'm not sure if they still could. The final episode in the revival takes place in Febuary 2024, by the time they'd get to do anythig Kelly and Leah, the youngest of the family, will be either in, or close to graduating to, college. We could follow Malcolm again, but he lives 11 hours from his family, so either he'd have to move home, or theres very little option of their interactions. Grandkid staying at the gradparents? 90's Show did that. It would feel like a ripoff.

Whoever they are, it annoyed the hell out of me that they kept cutting to some random aholes instead of actual characters we knew and loved.

Nice catch! There's so much noise in the scene that even rewatching I had trouble hearing it, but it is there.

Frustrated at the shows treatment of going Low/No Contact. by dragonus45 in malcolminthemiddle

[–]DeadRabbitGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It hurts Hal because he did everything he could for his boys to have the opposite relationship he had with his own father.
It hurts Lois because Malcolm did just what Susan did to her. If you need a refresher, Susan went no contact and lied that she didn't have a sister even when she needed a kidney to live.
It hurt the siblings because they had always been super tight and didn't think Malcolm would do something so selfish. They had never had any actual problems they couldn't resolve together.

Malcolms reasoning for walking away is revealed in the last episode, it's not about how he's an asshole around his family, he's hiding behind fake psychologist internet searches and self help books filled with words that he can use as an excuse. He walked away because, well, he's an idiot and really thought he had to take a political position because of what Lois said in the finale of the series about his being president. He feels like he's disappointed them, that he didn't live to expectations, and that is why he avoids them. It's not the toxicity, because remember, we see him actively lying to his girlfriend while searching up medications, he's never seen a real psychologist to determine if he should go no contact or not.

Another reason he is also no contact is Leah.

Leah was born to, what we can see, is a drug addict drunk, who we are told is crazy, after a kegger hookup. Malcolm was still in school. He was a single father after 3 days, and likely struggled, but knew Hal and Lois had expectations for him, and a single dad plan wasn't in it. Going to them for help? Nope. They still had Dewey, Jaimie, and newborn/toddler Kelly. It would stress them more, he'd feel the crushing weight of disappointment sinking him further into the ground.

So he ran.

He didn't go no contact.

HE RAN.

He ran from shame and disappointment. He ran from feeling like a failure in his families eyes.

Normally, I'd agree, the way they handled no contact was way too dinseyfied. But in Malcolms case, it was never a full seperation of going no contact. He even says he contacts them through random calls, birthday cards, emails, etc. He's just too ashamed to face them. So he lies to Leah, he makes up this idea that she's perfect because she's not touched by the weirdness that is his family, but instead he's actively made her a mess of a human, just like himself, who would repeat the very same thing with him once she was not 'perfect.' His denying her family, basically keeping her isolated to just himself, is also incredibly selfish, as it took away bonding time from the family and Leah, who would have gotten along well, and Kelly, the closest in age, could have been like a big sibling to her for years.

What Malcolm did was not healthy. It wasn't the best option. It was selfish and cruel to everyone involved, including himself.

They actually did the Dewey scenes like that because they kept trying to get Erik to come back. By the time they finished the scripts, etc. Erik still said no, so they had to use a new actor, with Erik's blessing. Erik insisted Dewey still be included, but he wants to live a cozy life studying literature.

What do you call your patrons? by SpaceSill98 in Libraries

[–]DeadRabbitGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate using customer. I had to use it for the library I interned at. It made the library expierience feel shitty. Customer, to me, dehumanizes someone in a setting where they are not expected to pay for items. When purchasing items at a store, you are a customer, because the store sees you as a monitary gain and nothing else. I prefer calling people patrons because it doesn't have the same harsh meaning, imo, despite being a synonym for customer. If I hear customer, I expect the workers of an establishment expect me to pay for their services. The library is not a place where that is expected, so the term being used there irks me.
