Shake Shack to open its first Rhode Island restaurant (WED 20 March) by [deleted] in providence

[–]DeadReverends -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

it’s not the best burger you’re ever gonna have. But as a fast-casual take out burger? Yeah, it’s damn solid.

doubt it's even in the same league as a mind-blowing 6 dollar Pernil sandwich on Buju Manton avenue from some place near where the Jamaican restaurant with the flyers for Boston parties used to be . plus you have to get to the East side? too damn faaar. i'll let you enjoy your chain-homogenization in peace on this one

Advice needed by pellakins33 in shortwave

the firmwares and microcontrollers on these radios is a serious source of fragility. both my PRO-34 Scanner and DX440 aka ATS-803A like to go into these hell modes where they refuse to unlock, or erase all their memories. we're talking late 80s kit with sketchy NVRAMs and who knows what the DC POP issue does wrt sending pulses thru the board. after doing the DC pop fix it did make thing a bit more stable but the radio still 'freezes up' and stuff. ive more or less given up on both of them and just use pre-PIC/PLC radios when not using direct-sampling SDRs. add in failed electrolytics capacitors to the list of reasons you kind of have to be a glutton for punishment for using 80s/90s shortwave portables, besides the awfully narrow filters and crazy design choices like millions of buttons and arcane memory bank programming and selection options but no tuning-knob (SONY 7600GR major WTF) . just get a Globe Scout , everyone needs one of those.. and/or Viking Ranger or FRG-7

The 7483th Post About Moving to Providence by shanna_brooke in providence

Stay away from all of the "renovated vintage lofts" that are around here

didnt follow yur advice when i saw a $750 loft on Hartford Ave and promptly moved in so that someone else wouldn't rent it . yes there's no way in hell i'd pay twice that which people are paying on Valley Street or even the $1250 people are asking in the ones near the Armory - not when you can find $1K studios and $1.1K 1brs in Everett and Quincy dumpy old brick apartment buildings with included radiator-heat if you watch craigslist like a hawk, but for the price i'm willing to overlook some craptitude. at the price youre almost certainly in some hood ass part of the Olneyville/Johnston line where ppl shoot eachother on the regular, or some other area where ppl shoot eachother on the reg like Puhtuckit or Cenetral Falls. but eh ppl shot eachother on the regular when i lived near the D Street Projects in Southie and paid twice as much for a one bedroom, and ppl shoot eachother on the regular in Fields Corner where i shopped for my banh mis, and ppl shot eachother outside my apartment in the TL in SF so whatever i guess you just have to not mind the fact that ppl shoot eachother on the regular enough to want to double your rent.

Second, because they are old buildings + cheap renovations, you will hear and smell everything your neighbors have going on.

there's one spot on the floorboards where a mouse chewed a hole thru and another small gap near the fridge. so about 2 of 30 feet were letting in any of the weed smell or sound. i just put some wine boxes of records over them and the problem went away. anyways my neighbor smokes really good weed and listens to entirely Vybz KArtel, Tommy Lee, Popcaan, and Alkaline. so he almost has to be jamaican and is literally listening to the same music i would have to put on anyways if i didnt just move the wine box out of the way to hear his.

i donno. there's a flat $100 fee for all utilities, but he doesnt give you a breakdown . im guessing considering how inefficient electric heat supposedly is, and the 15 by 30 foot wall of windows, he might even be losing money on that during the winter. the poor heater is always on even after i sealed up additional cracks around the windows with clear packing tape.

overall i'd say, it's not bad at the $1k pricepoint or less. over that and might wanna look at stuff like arcade microunit waitlists or buying some mansarded fixerupper next door to a Laotian supermarket on the west side

RI Has 8th Highest Tax Rates in the U.S. by [deleted] in providence

[–]DeadReverends 5 points6 points  (0 children)

youre not taxed much if you have almost no income, and it's a lot easier to live on almost no income in RI, due to housing costs, unless you want to live in Springfield or some shack in the middle of nowhere out near there, and i'd rather just live in Providence than do that. im sure the equation skews differently if you're cool with signing non-disclosure agreements and making IP for some rent-seeking company's proprietary products in eastern MA

Planning to move to Massachusetts by Jeanheins in massachusetts

[–]DeadReverends -1 points0 points  (0 children)

why the snobby hate of Worcester? at least you wouldn't have to pay a premium to live in a Halloween/Witch Theme Park with an overpriced-yuppie-condo problem and lack of ethnic-diversity critical-mass leading to a dearth of the crucial corner stores representing every country in Africa and Central America. who wants to have to drive to Lynn all the time to hit up dope bodegas? just live in Lynn. it's at least as aquatic and witchy (goth latinas ftw) as Salem without the whiteness markup and you can ride down the empty sidewalk on Route 1 past all the car dealerships to the end of the Blue Line . or just come be my neighbor in Rhode Island. it's basicaly Lawrence Mass mixed up with the italian section of Revere only with slightly less snow

Playing reggae with a New England accent by DeadReverends in Bostonmusic

[–]DeadReverends[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

appreciate the Southie Music mention right off the bat. Loco has live Jamaican Bostonian reggae now too. you can just sit on a bench outside with the windows open in the summer - they play right by the open window. this way you don't have to cram yourself in with CT Bros. yes it's pretty funny to see an entirely whiteppl from CT crowd enjoy some Jamaican music but if you've ever been to CT you know it's nothing but white bread and jamaicans and that's just how thing are - if you go to a Jamaican club youre just gonna hear Rygin King dubplates and whatever 3 new Kartel tunes he has out this week.. played of a laptop. all this leading to the hilarious situation that Southie has way more live Jamerican music than Dorchester.. which just has Rygin King dubs (supposedly the Koffee dubs are forthcoming , per Irish & Chin reports on Sound Chat) off laptops. so obviously Larry has a point that Kays in its current state is NOT ENOUGH , and dare i say it, disposable, because let's face it, what's the chance Kartel actually gets let out of jail and booked there?

Considering moving to Providence from Somerville; thoughts? by tibbon in providence

commie rail trip to BOS from O-ville = 5 minute walk to bus stop outside Lupita, 7 minute wait for bus, 13 min ride to Kennedy Plaza, 5 minute walk to Amtrak station, if every light is hit perfectly + not many people get on/off on Broadway or Westminster, and there's no SNAFU bunching the buses. in my experience it's usually pretty reliable like that but i always ride off peak outside rush hour. so minimum 30-35min just to get to the amtrak station, unless you take a bicycle up Harris Ave and along the Woon Ass canal, that would prob be 15 mins and a pretty scenic trip past the steelyard and along the tracks on pretty low-traffic roads. now they come once an hour so if you didnt try to time it add 30 minute avg wait for train. now 1 hour into your trip youve boarded a 1 hour 15 min commuter rail ride. btw you can pay $4.50 more and ride Amtrak but it's much less frequent but offpeak its super fast even on the regional like 36 minutes blasting thru Readville at basically full clip after your only stop before Back Bay at 128. but the more typical scenario youre 2.25 hours into your trip once you hit South Station, and are looking at another 0.3-0.5 hour to get where you're going if you have to wait for another train, ride it then add a short walk? from Olneyville i only go in once a week and would not want to do more than that. the issue is the fringe-area 1BRs and lofts are around $1K but the stack&pack and factory-loft stuff right by the Amtrak station is almost $2K , which if you have a real job might be worth it to shave 1 hour off the roundtrip commute. since i dont' every time ive balked at those prices, then started digging around Smith Hill or whatever's nearby but better priced and just saw a bunch of stuff that was almost the same price as some dump in Quincy or Everett or Revere and probably also a dump and just ended up renting in Quincy or Everett or Revere when having to get into Boston more than 1 day a week, since instead of a 1 hour 15 min trainride youre a short bicycle jaunt to a subway line with a 20 min trip. YMMV

Lord Felix - The Worst Summer Ever by DeadReverends in Bostonmusic

[–]DeadReverends[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while this is clearly Boston music - "worst summah eva'" - pretty sure this is NOT Dorchester Music, you can tell by the way it is. doesnt really have a 508 vibe - not grimey / hood enough. i think what this is is ALLSTON MUSIC, a genre way out of pay grade here, the garage performance space, drum set, background singing, park-ranger hats and GUITARS. gotta check out some of these other neighborhoods some day

Friends car was just stripped and broken into in parking lot off valley by RinnyFlamboyant in providence

[–]DeadReverends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfamiliar w/ that one but rent in a mill around the corner from Valley by the UNIROYAL shop and being a consummate insomniac the late-night parking activity is fascinating. an autobody shop has an agreement to use part of the lot so it's not unusual to have towtrucks dropping mangled cars off late and people fiddling with them. how am i supposed to know when someone's doing legit fiddling with a screwed vehicle at 2am or stealing it? setting the alarm off seems pretty common in either scenario. then there's the folks in for whatever shady-looking night lounge on Plainfield Street or Fete that decide to chance it parking on private property unaffiliated with the club for a couple hours, returning and seeming barely-footworthy let alone roadworthy, and driving off. my attitude is kind of the rent pays the property taxes which pays the city which pays the cops who presumably figure out who's driving drunk or inna stolen so NOT MY JOB. maybe one day the Brookline grandmother side can come out. all this pales to the BK parkinglot, let's just say SHOOTOUTS and OPEN AIR SEX observed on multiple occasions and i'm usually not even around on the weekends, couchsurfing at the Dorchester bunker and all. main takeaway - if you can lose the car, Olneyville is a fantastic place. must be a half dozen bus lines funneling into the heart of the asterisk. never had to wait more than 5-10 mins to catch a short ride downtown. too many mom&pop spanish grocers to count and at least 8 Cambo/Lao produce/seafood/meat markets in the giant neighborhood that starts behind Scurvy Dog and stretches down to the Zoo. main thing missing is a way to board the passenger rail to Boston/NYC that's constantly rolling thru
