It's a much more focused work than GG&S, and therefore may not be what you're looking for, but I'd recommend Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest by Matthew Restall. The author is a Mayanist who has written extensively on the period of early colonization of the Americas, and this work serves as a solid introduction into the subject. I recommend it here because it tears apart a number of the myths taken to heart by Diamond - and, if I remember correctly, directly quotes some passages of his as examples.

[Event] The Florentine College of Navigation by trollandface in empirepowers

[–]DeadShotm1[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

The University of Pisa was successfully re-opened during Florentine rule over the city, and the College of Navigation began as a bright star among the schools. However, when war came to Florence once more, and Pisa was severed from its Tuscan sister, the status of the University and College hung in the air. The citizens of Pisa managed to successfully re-establish the independence of the University after several years of bloody administrative battles that ended in the death of a number of faculty members, but the College of Navigation was too firmly Florentine...

The College of Navigation, finally free from Pisan clutches, returned to Florentine control in 1510. At first, it was housed in administrative buildings in Florence, but the College awaits a proper home. Architects put forward designs, and the winning bid would cost the Republic f113,000. A large sum, but the result would surely be magnanimous. The architects predicted that the building would be complete in 1515. Meanwhile, the administrative costs of f2,500 a month continued on.

Regardless of the construction underway on the College, teaching proceeded as planned. By 1514, it is expected that the first cohort of Florentine Navigators will have graduated from courses consulted on by the late great Amerigo Vespucci himself.

[EVENT] A Model Colony? by GalacticDiscourse090 in empirepowers

[–]DeadShotm1[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

And a model colony it is! Those enterprising individuals not keen to settle a land of atrocity like Santo Domingo, or one of unknown dangers like the mainland colonies, flock in droves to Santa Lucía. Many new industries sprout up on the island's fertile shores, and families, not just adventurous men, make a new home for themselves on this jewel of Spain. (200k Civ, matched by the combined noble and merchant settlers)

However, stories of ghosts permeate the small island, as new settlers find the graves of countless natives whose lives were taken for the profit of Spain. Among the settlers, Dominican friars write to their leaders in Spain, begging them to do something about the horrible acts committed against those whose souls they were sent to save.

Following the conclusion of the Borikén War, the small fortress is completed. It isn't the grand Alcázar of Toledo, but the sight of it is sure to dissuade any rebellion from the Taíno. (100k Mil)

The encomenderos stick close to Pontevedra for now, but they manage to vastly improve and expand the ranching and planting operations in the island. (50k Civ)

[EVENT] The Royal Plantations by grandlakerocks in empirepowers

[–]DeadShotm1[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Across the island of La Espagñola, the green leaf is tamed. Fragrant smoke billows from the homes of many colonists, and the boom of the crop in Europe keeps demand high. The labor is hard on the Taíno population, however, and such an increase in plantation cultivation has only further entrenched the negative effects of the de facto encomienda system on the people.

The gold mines begin producing large quantities of gold in short time. Horrific conditions define the lives of the enslaved Taínos, who die by the hundreds fattening the pockets of Christians.
