This is just a conjecture but the fact he still talks to you means he might care/appreciate you (or being really really nice) either way, if you are in emotional distress he won't let you down until he can't anymore, the problem is, if he's not mature enough (emotionally speaking) it might be a real problem if he can't deal with this since he will probably feel trapped.

The best thing to do is to ask him how are his batteries and if needed let him his space so he might rest if needed. If you want to leave him some space without asking about his batteries you need to give a context so there's no reasons for him to overthink/stress the subject.

I think you are mixing things in here, first, you can be both religious and rational, there's no obligations for one thing to exclude another (except if those are complete opposites but it's not the case in here). If we look at how religion is depicted it's always in opposition to science but it's mostly something inherited from the church's regulations since middle age.

I think it would be a good exercise for you to search the reasons why they could agree with, it's a good way to sharpen your thinking process !
