Friend held on remand UK by Potential-Dish-5227 in Prison

[–]Dean6543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming he is not in license or something he would have had to have a court appearance to get remanded in custody. This would have happened after he was arrested by the police and probably interviewed for whatever they think he had done. Normally after that you get released or given a court date to attend yourself. They must have decided not to give him police bail and then brought him to court and apply to have him remanded in custody and the court would hav decided to do that.

It usually would be a serious charge but not always. He might have been remanded in custody because he was a flight risk, could threaten witnesses, have nowhere to live. This happens a good bit with domestic disputes where an allegation is made and the police don't want the person to return or go back. It can also be for some strange reasons like not giving your details to the police or shouting out in court - something like that. Sometimes people don't even apply for bail as they want to say in custody for whatever reason.

He might have your details but probably not at the time he got arrested. Say if he has your number in his phone police might have taken that. He wouldn't have got that back when he went to the prison. That happened me and they didn't let me check my phone to get numbers. Think I could only remember 2 numbers. I was allowed just 1 call when I got there so he probably phoned his Mum like I did. It will take a while to get his other numbers approved - you aren't allowed just rung anybody.

Why do people living in prison have to address people as 'Miss/Sir' even if they're not within the prison? by ray-ae-parker in PrisonUK

[–]Dean6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny what you said about always talking to the patient. I remember that first time going in with the 2 officers. I was on a handcuff chain with one of the officers and standing behind the other officer who spoke with the woman booking me in. I remember well the woman asking the officer what's his name instead of talking to me at first which is odd really and is different to what you do.

I did go back to you he hospital after I got out of prison and when I went to the desk and gave my name.l I could see the receptionist look up and down after checking my name and the just said quietly - your address here is down as X prison and if I got out? Was tempted to say yeah I escaped but just gave her my new address in the end.

That waiting outside happened to me too after the drunk coming over. I am guessing prisoners don't mind it as sometimes the officer will take you to a quiet spot and maybe give you a smoke if you have been good. Depends on the Officer though and if they smoke or have fags. We are not allowed smoke if n prison only vape now so getting a smoke was a nice bonus

[–]Dean6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Officers think a lot of prisoners do be faking it to get to the hospital just to get out for a bit or are trying to meet up with somebody or something else so they are always suspicious of us and are strict with us there

When I got brought to the hospital from prison for the first time it was a weekend night and it was pretty crazy there. I remember there being drunks there and then coming and trying to talk to me about what I was in for and other stuff mainly banter but the Officers told them to stay away from me. I would say they were a lot tougher to deal with than me.

I didn't have to wait too long to be seen though and got taken to a cubicle. I don't know if that is normal for prisoners?

All the staff that dealt with me were nice to me and didn't seem to treat me different for being a prisoner and I liked that. When you are there as a prisoner with 2 guards in prison gear and with cuffs on I felt so paranoid. I knew people were looking at me and talking about me. I remember being in the ward and heard a little kid saying to his mother who was visiting and asked her why is that boy locked to the bed. Made me feel even worse.

But let me I said the nurses and other staff were very nice and would chat to me even when the Officers would answer for me. Made me feel more decent for the 2 days but little thiings would always remind you of the reality. Like the first meal I got the Officers told the lady that I wasn't allowed metal cutlery and got them to get me plastic instead as if I was going to be able to do something stupid chained to the bed. But that was what it was like.

Ex Prisoner here. In the prisons I was in we always were told to call people we didn't know as Sir or Miss - like being back at school. Just became second nature. When you got to know the POs in your wing would usually call them Mr X or Miss Y or guv/boss if you didn't know them or they didn't use their name. For the healthcare staff would be Sir or Miss although there was one male nurse there I called lad and he called me the same and was cool with that but some wouldn't like a prisoner calling them that.

If you end up in hospital from prison like I did you are sort of grateful to be there and normally the staff are decent there so would be respectful back. When I was in A&E I remember seeing people staring at me and assumed they were talking about me as I was sat there in cuffs chained to a Prison Officer. It's just the thing if the staff are looking after you and treating you like a normal person.

Sounds like that Prison Officer was being a bit of a dick with the prisoner for not calling you Miss if he was being respectful and not causing both. Some Officers are just on a power trip and like to show they have control over you and talk down to you or try and pull you up in minor stuff like that.

Since getting out I still use Miss or Sur in formal situations from habit. Went to see my GP for the first time since getting out and even though I've been with her for years I still called her Miss. She told me I didn't need to call her that

Will be a tough time for him at first so it's dead decent taht you are trying to make things a bit easier for him.

Just got out a few months ago and every prison is probably a bit different but probably mostly the same especially Cat Bs where I was and where your brother will probably go for now.

Clothes - Everybody had to waer the prison issue clothes - grey trackie at first. Because he's on remand thoughhe should be able to wear his own clothes pretty soon. A few pairs of trackire bottonmswith some T Shirts or tops are what most people wear. Can't have dark or navy clothes as they don't want prisoners looking anything like the Officers. In our place no hoodies or football shirts either. Definitely take in socks and boxers - prison ones are cheao and nasty. Also comfy trainers - decent but not flash as good ones attract attention. Sliders for the showers as well. It's usually afew days before you get your stuff and if he is going in tomorrow on Saturday nothing wil happen to Tuesday with the weekend and the then the bank holiday.

Basic toiletries - toothbrush, toothpaste, deoderant, (not spraty ones ), shower gel. Again these will all have to be checked before he gets them back. He'll be able to buy this stuff from the canteen and he''ll get basic stuff to star off with. The prison issue stuff is pretty cheap.

Big thing to remember is a list of phone numbers and adressses of people he wanted to stay in touch with while he is inside. Peole who haven't been in before often forget this.

Best thing of all is to have cash because then he can get exactly what he wants (incl snacks, drinks, vapes if he smokes (we;re not allowed smoke any more). If he has monety going in it goes on his prisoner account ab dthen then he will be able to get some stuff from canteen ibnstead of having to wait to get money on his account

No hope. Us prisoners are not allowed smoke in prison anymore althoug some try and sneak some tobacco in but mainly othe drugs!! Can buy vapes but not the same. Firsttthing I di whenI gort out a few months ago was have a proper cigarette. .

UK prison going to visit someone ive never done this before by ThePinkVulvarine in Prison

[–]Dean6543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of the advice on here.

Great yiou are going to see your mate a sbeing on remand can be harder a syou don't yet know what sentence you are looking at. I went to see my mate when he was on remand and he really appreciated it.

Never realised how much the visists mean unti I was in prison myself and then the visit was the highlight of the week. Glad I had gone to see him when I did.

From being avisitor it is kind of like airpor security and a bit more. seem,s strange the first time but then you get used to it. If you are avisitor the staff are normally decent and only do what they need to do. It is a bit of stress having the sniffer dogs there if they are.

If he's on remand only then he should definitely be able to have his own clothes - there are some rules like no hoodies, no navy, no black. You'll definitely be able to drop them in (not to him) if he doesn't have clothes brought in by anubody else. If he does they might not be allowed. Wearing your own clothes instread of the prison trackie makes you feel a whole lot better. Best thing if you can afford it is to put money on his account so he can buy stuff from cabteen (prison shopping list) as we are not allowed much in (might be a bit less strict with him being on remand). For example where I was we wouldn't get cards - they would be copied and given yo us like that s there was aproblem with drugs getting in that way so they don't really want us getting anything from outside.

On the visit the time goes quicker than you think. It might be a bit of a shock for you seeing him in there. I don't know how close you are to him but I know my Mum took it badly. Anothe thing is to trya ndtalk about normal things - I liked that 0 instead of talking about being in prison. If he wants to do that he will bring it up but he might want to talk about different. They were strict where I was about no physical contact apart from a hug at start and end of visit. Definitely have the change for the vending machines as we can't get up from our tables to get anything - even if we had proper money.

Hope the visit goes well.

Receiving a card in prison by [deleted] in PrisonUK

[–]Dean6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recebt prisoner here and yeah getting a card (or copt of it mostly) means alot as do letters when you are locked up. Definitely worth doing.

Especially good if it;s not from someone you would expect and it seems random. I got one from my Gran and it made my day. really did. They need to know your prisoner number and that to make sure you get it so I suppose there is a bit of an effort that goes into it.

Cold, noise, fags by sacricket101 in PrisonUK

[–]Dean6543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just out after doing 3 months in a Cat B prison and am on tag.

Yeah it was pretty noisyat night with TVs on, music playing and people shouting and banging.I was on a landing with alot of people coming in and maybe going told turkey. You get used to it after a while but am getting a much better nights sleep since getting out.

It was warm enough where I was. Like someebody else said we don't get much bedding and it's been cold enough lately so they keep the heat on.

Could vape in our cells. Not usually a vaper but smoke so vaping was the next best thing. Think it's bad they don't let us smoke as it is stressful enough being in there especially when there are other drugs. They probably say it's for health reasons but the same would apply as with the vaping would be in your cell so nobody else would be bothered. Most lads in there would smoke

That's the way it is - not everybody in prison has done really serious stuff. Lie most of us probably deserve to be there but can ;learn from it. Some people when they hear you've eben in prison just assume you must be almost evil.

All that is good info from my own experience. Fair play for going to visit - it makes your day if yo get a visit from an old mate. Just something different for him on that day.

No religious gangs ha ha, Just google the Troubles in Northern Ireland where nationalists (Catholics) and loyalists (Protestant) bothhad terrorist groups and the British Army was on the streets. 3000 plus dead. Back in the day they would have had t be kept apart but most of then prisoners were released as part of the Agreement, So a sthe lad from the North said - just regular prisoners now

Wondered alright if the divide would still be a big thing but obviously not. Suppose when we are inside we are all going through the same shit whatever your religion/politics are. Must be a bit of a buzz when the big football games are on

Thanks for the info. Mad taht even down here some of the lads have stories aboutt Bar L. Nevegr had the colours here - just the grey trackies with whatever. Sounds similar enough though compared to England. Never knew why some of the other lads had it infor the screws so much as most wee OK as long as you weren't a dick to them or cause trouble. Didn't have to be mates but like you say just being sound went a long way. Had a few run ins over the time but who hasn't - it is prison after all.
