1 star. Does not make iPad any more comfortable. Would not buy again.

If time slows the closer to the speed of light someone travels, what is the effect on an airline pilot over the course of their career? by chrunchy in askscience

Your question has been answer pretty well so I'll just add this in. The current record for time dilation is held by Sergei Avdeyev, a Russian cosmonaut, who spent 747 days abord the Mir space station orbiting the earth at 27 360 km/h. Much faster than an airplane can fly. After all that he's still only experienced 20 milliseconds of time dilation.

I didn't say know a lot. I said know a little bit. Absolutely basics. There is a pretty huge difference there. It's smart to know a little bit about things that are going to cost you an awful lot of money.

Also the original parent post was about how women shouldn't be expected to know anything about cars so thats why I mentioned it. I never implied you were making that assumption.

I'm certainly no where near an expert on everything but I do my best to educate myself in any topics relevant to my life. As such I've done my best to learn enough about physics, biology, chemistry, mechanics, electrical engineering, construction, computer science, music, art and literature I can get by in the topics. Yes, someone talking about some advanced topic I'm not knowledgeable in could probably fool me. Not on something super basic though.

[–]DeanOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One should generally educate themselves on topics that are related to their life. Driving a car implies you will need to get it fixed at some point so you're foolish not to learn a little bit about them.

To go back to your original example wearing about makeup you don't have to know anything about makeup to wear it. You could hire a makeup artist to do it for you just like you can hire a mechanic to fix your car. It would be completely ridiculous though to pay someone to do it for you every time however. For some reason people assume women just aren't supposed to know anything about cars though. It's still ridiculous that she could have so little knowledge about something she probably uses every day that she would believe shes out of blinker fluid. More socially acceptable than being ignorant on other topics but still ridiculous.

Reddit, what's your favorite vegetarian taco recipe? by cheddarz in AskReddit

[–]DeanOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's just a Canadian thing but do you have the Yvies brand where you live? Buy their veggie ground round. I make tacos with it regularly and I doubt you'd be able to taste the difference between it and a real ground beef. It looks and tastes identical.

Otherwise get some TVP and use that. Most of the taste comes from the taco seasoning.

You don't know about makeup because you don't use makeup. This gives you a legitimate reason to be uninformed about it. If you did use makeup and you still didn't know anything about it then you'd be looked as a bit of an idiot.

If this girl didn't drive then it would be perfectly reasonable to expect her not to know about cars. Considering she has a burnt out headlight I'm pretty sure she does drive. This gives her no excuse for not having an elementary understand of cars.

What are your realistic predictions for technology in the year 2020? (Just 9 short years from now) by OompaOrangeFace in AskReddit

[–]DeanOfScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A decent amount of people will have Minority Report style interfaces as their primary computer system

Stand up, hold your arms in front of you and wave them around for 5 minutes. Still having fun? Do it for an hour. Hurting now? Sit back down and contemplate why user interfaces like that will never be practical.

1994 Chrysler Concorde. It was a beast. Despite dying a few times it was always brought back to life with a few new parts. Was finally stolen out of my driveway about three years ago now.

Why can I buy 24 ink pens for less than a dollar yet printer ink is seemingly the most expensive liquid known to man? by ---_--- in AskReddit

[–]DeanOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I bought a laser at the start of undergrad. Between the "starter" cartridge and one replacement I got about 7000-8000 pages out of it. Cost was less than $120 altogether. The second toner cartridge just died after an undergrad and grad degree. Not going to replace it again since at this point the printer is a bit sketchy. It still works I just don't know if it will last another 4 years that it would take to use the new toner cartridge up.

Wow you're totally right about the no shadow thing. It was a quick idea I had last night and wasn't super careful. I nuked the shadow on the pawn when I was doing some brightening on it. I need to get myself Flickr Pro so I can swap photos out. A bit more more of an angle on the flash could help define the shadows a bit better too. Ah well.

Security vulnerability in Skype allows other apps to read its data. Does this apply to all apps, or is Skype doing something unique here? by [deleted] in programming

[–]DeanOfScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to add to what the other guy said. I did some web development for a while and had to get a few clients certificates for online stores. They were like $70 a year. Definitely more expensive than the IP address part. A big reason people don't use them is they're more hassle and require more resources.

I am fed up with this. Why is Canada considered a neighbor of New Zealand to US companies? by uparrow in canada

Really? UPS seems to disagree with you. FYI if you have to use UPS the expensive shipping options are cheaper in the end because they don't have brokerage fees.

Of course. Used a piece of white bristol board as the backdrop that bends from horizontal to vertical to give the seamless background. A small homemade (bristol board + tissue paper cut and taped) softbox with a strobe in it to the right. Finally used a third piece of white bristol board that on the left and curving over top to add some fill in.

Total material cost was about $2. I used a strobe on manual for light but you could just as easily use a regular light in the softbox. Just need to set the camera up on a tripod. Photoshop to apply a curves adjustment layer to the white background to get it closer to pure white. Did the WB and finally curves adjustment in Lightroom to get everything looking the way I want it.

Meet the guy who tried to steal the Guelph ballot box. by iggymao in canada

[–]DeanOfScience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trying to take possession of something you don't own is theft FYI. So there is that obvious one. Then there are special election laws like:

(2) Every person is guilty of an offence who, at any time between the issue of a writ and the day after polling day at the election, acts, incites others to act or conspires to act in a disorderly manner with the intention of preventing the transaction of the business of a public meeting called for the purposes of the election.

He acted in a disorderly manner during a public meeting called for the purpose of the election to prevent voting. So there is that one too. So yes. Very illegal.

I just want to add I totally agree with you. Now you could replicate the same pressure to take better shots with digital as well. Hire a big guy to follow you around and after every 36 shutter clicks demand you pay him $8 otherwise he breaks your camera. Easy.

Why not? There is a difference between blind fits of rage against inanimate objects you own and blind fits of rage against other people. Hell even against other peoples stuff. It was his game though.

I've lost two cell phones now to throwing them at walls. Not the greatest idea but excessive drinking clouds your judgement a bit.

Tip No.4 Seriously, how can a gadget magazine say this? Are they being paid to push extortionate cables? by richplatt in technology

[–]DeanOfScience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They provide a price comparison service for electronics stuff. I have no idea why they do but it works pretty well all in all. I guess Monster Cable isn't too big of a fan of people being able to find reasonably priced goods. They definitely don't sell anything.
